Project 8: Zine
(pronounced zēn/)
Goal: Your goal for this project is to create a zine (or self published, DIY book) together as a class. Each student will design a page and cover page for the class zine, which will be based around a theme we decide together in class. Once everyone turns in their digital files, we will print, fold, and collate (or put together) the pages of the zine together as a class. Afterwards, each student will have a copy of something the class worked together to create.
For your next project, you will be collaborating as a class to make a class Zine using Adobe Illustrator.
What is a zine? Click here to find out!
Create two 8.5" x 5.5" documents in Adobe Illustrator. One of these documents will be your page, and one of these documents will be your cover design. Be sure to convert your document to grayscale.
Be sure to include your name somewhere on your zine page!
Your cover page must include the following text:
*******Your content must be school appropriate. If you are unsure if your design is school appropriate, ASK FIRST!!!
ALL zine content will be vetted by the instructor before it goes to print. I reserve the right to pull any content that is inappropriate from the final zine, and it will not be printed. Your final grade will reflect whether or not a student's page was printed.
Your project will be graded on:

Your project will be graded on:
- Work Ethic: the amount of energy and commitment given to the work (this applies to designing your pages, but also when we put the zines together as a class!)
- Lesson: how well you followed instructions in the creation of your zine—are your files labeled correctly, did you follow the prompt, is your document sized correctly, etc.
- Creativity: an original and imaginative solution is seen in your designs. Make sure that your drawings are YOUR ideas—this means that you may NOT copy another artist's work. That counts as plagiarism. We will discuss creative copyright and what constitutes plagiarism in art in class.
- Craftsmanship: how well your pages are designed—make sure you use clean lines, with no sloppy paths or linework. Make sure that your final pages are finished, and that you pay attention to detail in your designs.
