Project 2: Open Theme

TMI AP PHOTO
Project 2: Open Theme: Portfolio Development

Your goal for this project is to help you develop a solid conceptual idea for your AP Portfolio. You will write a proposal for the "big idea" you would like to pursue as you develop your AP portfolio for submission in April.

Your idea can change or evolve over time, but you need to go ahead and begin thinking NOW about what you want your final portfolio to be about.

DUE DATES:

Friday, 10/8/21: You will use class time to research artists whose work you are interested in. You will then write a 1 page minimum (single space, size 12 font) proposal for the project you want to work on. Be sure to include these things in the proposal:
  • What subject matter you want to shoot and WHY. What is your "Big Idea" that you want to investigate in this project?
  • What you hope to accomplish by undergoing this project. (Examples: I want to become a better photographer, I want to use photography as  a tool for social justice, I want to use photography to document and explore my relationship with my sibling, etc.)
  • What you hope your audience will get out of your project—You should care about how others react to your work. Think hard about this.
  • How you plan to shoot. Will you use a specific lens/focal length? Will you shoot at a certain time of day or in a certain location? Will your final output be in color or black and white?
  • Where and when you plan to shoot. You might find it helpful to draw up a timeline for yourself.
  • How do you envision the final presentation of this project? (Example: a series of large, black and white prints that will hang in the refectory.)
  • Be sure to include the works of at least 3 artists you are researching for inspiration. You may choose to talk about a specific series an artist shot, or maybe their general style across several bodies of work. You may also talk about how an artist shows/hangs their work for exhibition. Think about the artists we have discussed in class or that you have seen in museums or galleries—they do not all have to photographers.  Include an example of each artists' work in your proposal.
You will type your proposal in a Google Doc. Your proposal must be 1 page long, size 12 point font, single spaced. Turn in a digital copy of your proposal to your Project 2 folder in Google Drive labeled lastnme_firstname_p2_proposal. This is due by the beginning of class on Friday, 10/8/21.

Thursday, 10/14/21:
Over the long weekend, shoot 500 images towards your approved proposal. When you return on Thursday, you will import your images and create a contact sheet labeled lastname_firstname_p2_cs1. Turn this into your lastname_firstname folder under Project 2. This is due by midnight for a grade.

Monday, 10/18/21: Over the weekend, shoot 200 images towards your approved proposal. When you return on Monday, you will import your images and create a contact sheet labeled lastname_firstname_p2_cs2. Turn this into your lastname_firstname folder under Project 2. This is due by midnight for a grade.

Monday, 10/25/21:
Over the weekend, shoot 200 images towards your approved proposal. When you return on Monday, you will import your images and create a contact sheet labeled lastname_firstname_p2_cs3. Turn this into your lastname_firstname folder under Project 2. This is due by midnight for a grade.

Monday, 11/1/21:
Over the weekend, shoot 200 images towards your approved proposal. When you return on Monday, you will import your images and create a contact sheet labeled lastname_firstname_p2_cs4. Turn this into your lastname_firstname folder under Project 2. This is due by midnight for a grade.

UPDATED DUE DATE: Wednesday, 11/17/21: CRITIQUE DAY! On this day, you will turn in:
  • 5 prints larger than letter size paper
  • 15 final, processed PSD files

Please note that your final images should all be cohesive, as they will be related to your proposed idea. Good luck and happy shooting!
