Project 2: Composition

Click HERE for a tutorial on how to turn in your work.
GOAL: For this project, you will explore different modes of composition by photographing a single subject many different ways.
  1. There will be 3 parts to this project:
    Part 1 (Frame)
    Part 2 (Viewpoint)
    Part 3 (Rule of Thirds)
  2. You will pick ONE subject. Please be considerate with your object choice. Make it something interesting and unique to you. Do no use your cellphone or car keys or a bag of Doritos.
  3. You will photograph your single subject utilizing the compositional elements of Frame, Perspective, and the Rule of Thirds. All of the images you create must be of your single subject.
  4. You may move around in any way you see fit. You may move your subject to a different location or lighting scenario, as long as your subject remains the same.
Part 1: "FRAME"
20 images shot of one single subject exploring the compositional tool of framing.
-- "FRAME" Practice looking with your camera, and begin to SEE through your view finder as opposed to merely looking. Explore the different aspects of your object (in different locations, lighting, and distance). Be mindful of the edges of your FRAME
 to emphasize your focal point in your composition. Pay attention to the lines, shapes, and patterns within your frame, and how these can lead the viewer's eye to your subject.

Part 2: "VIEWPOINT"
40 images shot of the same subject as above, this time exploring VIEWPOINT.
-- shoot at least 20 images from a bird's eye view
-- shoot at least 20 images from a bug's eye view
Part 3: "RULE OF THIRDS"
20 images shot of the same subject as above, this time exploring the RULE OF THIRDS .

DUE DATES:
Monday, 10/26/20 by midnight:
  • 80 images (minimum) shot and imported in Adobe Bridge into your Project 2 folder under your Projects folder on your flash drive. Label your images lastname_firstname_p2_1, lastname_firstname_p2_2, etc.
  • PDF Contact Sheet of all images turned into Google Drive. Label your contact sheet lastname_firstname_p2_cs. Place it in your Project 2 folder, within your lastname_firstname Intro to Photo folder in Google Drive that you shared with me at the beginning of the year. Your contact sheet is due by MIDNIGHT.

Thursday, 11/5/20 by midnight:
  • 6 Final images, each edited in Photoshop, and uploaded to your Google Drive Project 2 folder as PSD files. Your files should have, at the very least, a curves adjustment layer to apply contrast. Make sure you open your files in Photoshop to check that you have applied the correct adjustment layers!
    * 2 "Frame" images

    * 2 "Viewpoint" images (one bug, one bird)
    * 2 "Rule-of-Thirds" images
  • Label your files:
    lastname_firstname_p2_final_frame_1,  lastname_firstname_p2_final_frame_2
    lastname_firstname_p2_final_bird, lastname_firstname_p2_final_bug
    lastname_firstname_p2_final_thirds_1, lastname_firstname_p2_final_thirds_2
