Elements and Principles

TMI AP PHOTO
Project 1: Elements and Principles

The goal of this project is to get you thinking about how to identify the elements and principles of design within your own work. For this project, using only items from your kitchen, create compositions that display the principles and elements of design.

You will turn in 15 final, processed images. Each image will demonstrate one of the elements and principles of design you see below. You must shoot at least 20 exposures for each element/principle. Happy shooting!

The Elements of Design are:
  1. Line
  2. Shape
  3. Form
  4. Space
  5. Value
  6. Color
  7. Texture
The Principles of Design are:
  1.  Balance
  2. Contrast
  3. Emphasis
  4. Size/Scale/Proportion
  5. Repetition
  6. Rhythm/Movement
  7. Variety
  8. Unity

 DUE DATES:

Tuesday, 9/8/20: Over the long weekend, you will pick 7 of the above elements/principles and make at least 20 exposures for each, totaling 140 exposures total. You can choose to shoot them out of order if you wish.

On Tuesday, you will import your homework images and create a contact sheet. Label your contact sheet lastname_firstname_p1_elements_cs_1. Turn this into your Project 1 folder by midnight for a grade.

If you have any tech issues due to online learning, don't sweat it but please email me and let me know so I can support you!

Monday, 9/14/20: Over the weekend, you will shoot 160 more images towards your project, this time focusing on the last 8 elements/principles. In class, you will import your images and create a contact sheet. Label your contact sheet lastname_firstname_p1_elements_cs_2. Turn this into your Project 1 folder by midnight for a grade.

THURSDAY, 10/8/2020: CRITIQUE DAY!  (Hopefully, in person!) On this day, you will turn in:
  • Your 4 best images printed on paper larger than letter size
  • All 15 of your final digital files (PSD) to Google Drive under your Project 1 folder in Google Drive. Label your files lastname_firstname_p1_balance, lastname_firstname_p1_line, etc.
