a detailed list of who you plan to photograph this weekend. You will plan out and describe ideas for 5 separate photographs. Each description must be 1 paragraph long (minimum). In each description, you must include:
  • Who you plan to photograph

Today you will use class time to practice the technique of masking, or applying a selective change to a part of your image in Photoshop.

Navigate to Google Drive and go to your Shared With Me folder. In the folder titled 2018-19 TMI Photo Class Folder, navigate to In Class Assignments and Masking. In this folder, there is a DNG file for you to download. You will use this image to practice masking today.

Thursday, 10/4/18

Today you will prep your Project 2 homework images for soft critique. For this, you will need to choose your 5 strongest images for your project. You should have already processed these in ACR and Photoshop.

Label your images lastname_firstname_p2_soft_1, lastname_firstname_p2_soft_2, etc.

Convert your 5 strongest images to JPEG for soft critique. You are ONLY converting these to JPEG because this is a soft critique that occurs on the projector, and a JPEG file is easier for me to download for class critique. Please note that when you are PRINTING your work, you NEVER print from a JPEG—only the processed RAW file!

Once you have converted your images to JPEG, I want you to zip them and label your zip file lastname_firstname_p2_soft. Drop this in the class soft critique folder on Google Drive located HERE (1st) or HERE (4th).

Friday, 9/27/18

Today you will write a detailed proposal explaining your ideas for Project 2. You will post your completed proposals to your Weebly student website blog. Your posts are due by midnight, and we will go over them together as a class on Friday. You may also include inspiration images, text, video, etc. into your proposal, if it helps you to get your idea across.

Your proposals should be a minimum of 4 paragraphs long, with 5 sentences minimum per paragraph. In your proposals, you should explain:
  • What is your idea for your Tableau project? What narrative are you choosing to work with? Is this an existing narrative or one you have made up? Explain briefly what happens in your chosen narrative.
  • Why are you choosing the narrative you've chosen for your project? What are you drawing on for inspiration? How can you best communicate your conceptual ideas through photographs? Make sure that your concept aligns with the project goal for Tableaux images.
  • How are you going to shoot your images this weekend? Do you have ideas for images in mind? Will you need to secure models for your shoot? Will you need any special props to make your images? Detail any equipment or technical needs here. (For example, if you plan to do long exposures, you will need a tripod. Or, perhaps you want a wider angle image, so you will need a wide angle focal length lens.)
  • Where and when do you plan to create your images? Do you have a set location or locations in mind? What kind of light will you need to make your photographs? Be aware that quality of light/time of day can communicate a mood or idea. For example, images made at twilight can signify a turning point between the safety of daytime and the covert, potentially threatening time of night.

Friday, 9/21/18

Responding to Photographs
Today you will read the following article titled Responding to Photographs.

Then, you will take some time to look through your 24 final Project 1 images. Choose 1 image of your own and write about it as a blog post on your student Weebly website. Be sure to refer to the filename of the image you are writing about.
  • Title the post Responding to Photographs.
  • Your response should be 4 paragraphs minimum, 5 sentences minimum per photograph. Refer to the PDF you just read as you write about the image. You may also find it helpful to look at this handout: how_to_critical_analysis_2017-18.pdf
  • Post your response before the next class period. If you don't finish in class today, you must finish and post this for homework. Be sure to hit PUBLISH at the top right hand corner.

Photo Smackdown: Camera Basics Challenge
Today in class, you will complete your first Photo Smackdown! We will periodically have challenges where you compete in teams as a class, or against my other section of Photography I. Today you will divide into 2 teams and compete against each other. These are meant to be fun, with points awarded for creativity and ingenuity, so use your noodle!

See below for your instructions. When you return to class, your team will begin importing your images onto 1 computer, and you will process your images in ACR as a team. We will then vote on the strongest images—the winning team will receive a fabulous prize!

TMI PHOTO / CAMERA BASICS CHALLENGE
Divide yourself up into 2 teams. Give your team a name. I will name a captain for each team. Designate 1 person to operate the camera, 1 person to direct models, 1 person to pay attention to lighting, etc. Come up with a game plan before you get to work.

Set your camera to Manual mode for this challenge. Make sure that you are shooting in RAW format, and that your camera’s color space is set to Adobe RGB 1998.

Teams may only work in the area designated by Mrs. Cooper McCauley. Practice common sense while working. Conduct yourself according to TMI’s honor code and behavior expectations.

The team with the most successful images wins. Points will be awarded for creativity and ingenuity. The winning team will receive a fabulous prize!

As a team, make a photograph:
1. where you freeze motion
2. where you blur motion

3. with a shallow DOF
4. with a deep DOF

Make a portrait of one of your teammates (different teammate for each scenario—you may repeat 1 teammate if your team has less than 5 members).

5. in dramatic lighting
6. in open shade
7. in harsh lighting
8. using the fastest ISO your camera offers
9. using the slowest ISO your camera offers

10. Make a team self portrait using the self timer on your camera. All teammates must present in the image.

  • What are you most excited for this year at TMI? This doesn't have to be related to our class.
  • What are you most nervous about this year at TMI?
  • Name 1 goal you hope to accomplish in our class this year and why. What kind of photography are you interested in? Did you have a favorite project in Digital Art? What are you hoping to learn from this class?

Project I: Work Day
  1. Use class time today as a work day for your Scavenger Hunt Project. You need to rate and choose your best image for each word, and then process your chosen images in Camera RAW. Be sure to avoid any clipping if possible in your shadows and highlights.
  2. Once you have processed all 25 images, you will choose your 10 best overall for our soft critique on Thursday. Choose your best 10 overall images and convert them to JPEG at 1500 pixels on the longest edge using the Adobe Bridge Export Panel. You will then batch rename these JPEGs as lastname_firstname_p1_soft_1, lastname_firstname_p1_soft_2, etc.
  3. Upload your 10 jpegs to the shared class folder HERE for soft critique on Thursday. Your 10 jpegs are due before class on Thursday for a grade.

*****Please note that you are only converting these images to JPEG for your SOFT CRITIQUE. You will turn in a processed RAW file. You will never turn in a JPEG as your final project submission.
