2021-22 PHOTO I // IN CLASS ASSIGNMENTS

Wednesday, 1/5/22

This week you will use class time to submit your work to an exhibition opportunity for a grade. This quarter, you will be submitting to the Rocky Mountain School of Photography High School Photography Contest.
  1. Navigate here: https://rmsp.com/photo-contest
  2. Read the call for entry and read through the different categories. You will choose 5 images that you have made so far in this class to submit; consider which category they would fit in best.
  3. Navigate to Adobe Bridge and choose the 5 images you wish to submit. You will need to save these as JPEG at 2000 pixels on the longest edge.
  4. Label your files lastname_firstname_rmsp_contest_1, lastname_firstname_rmsp_contest_2, etc.
  5. Click Enter The Contest. You will need to create an account using your TMI email address. Once logged in, fill out the required information and choose which category or categories you plan to submit to.
  6. Upload your JPEG files to the correct categories. Once you've finished, forward the confirmation email to z.mccauley@tmi-sa.org. If you don't forward the email, you won't receive credit for the assignment so don't forget!

Wednesday, 10/20/21

Today you will use class time to prepare for soft critique. We will have a soft critique during the second half of class. Choose your 5 strongest images (these should be full res PSD files) and compress them into a zip file labeled lastname_firstname_p2_soft. I will pass around a flash drive during class for you to upload your zip files.

Tuesday, 11/3/20

Today is a work day to rate your strongest images and prep them for soft critique on Thursday.
  1. Choose your 5 strongest images for soft critique. Process your images in Photoshop and save them as PSD files.
  2. Create a sip file of your images by selecting the 5 files in Finder. Right click on the selection and choose "Compress 5 items." This creates a zip file—it is compressed and a smaller file size, making it easier to upload and download from the internet. Label the zip file lastname_firstname_p3_soft.zip
  3. Navigate to the shared soft critique folder HERE.
  4. Upload your zip file to the shared folder for soft critique.

Monday, 9/14/20

WORK DAY
  • Today is a work day to import your homework images. Place your new HW images in a Weekend 2 folder under your Project 1 folder on your hard drive.
  • After you've imported your images, look through and choose your strongest image for each scavenger hunt word. You will then upload these to this shared folder so that we can have a soft critique on Tuesday, 9/15/20. Please create a folder with your name for your images.

TAKE A WALK

For today's assignment, you're going to text your skills of seeing. Harnessing your senses of observation will make you a stronger photographer.
  1. Go outside to your back or front yard. Choose a comfortable spot to sit for a few minutes. Leave your camera. Bring a notebook.
  2. Set a timer on your phone for 5 minutes, then put it away. Sit and observe what you see. Write it down. Draw a sketch in your notebook.
  3. As you observe, pay attention to all 5 of your senses, beyond just what you can see. What can you hear? What do you smell? What can you taste, and what can you feel? Your backyard is likely a familiar place, but think about how it might feel to experience it from another perspective.
  4. After your 5 minutes are up, go and get your camera. Spend the rest of class time making photographs in your backyard. Try seeing it from another perspective. How would the yard look to a dog? A bug? How would it look to someone who has never seen it before?
  5. Find something interesting in an ordinary place and show it to us. We will look at your work in class tomorrow. Bring at least 5 images with you to view.

Tuesday, 8/25/20
For today's assignment, you are going to complete a mini scavenger hunt! So brush the dust off that camera and step outside!

Go outside in your front or back yard. Make sure you are shooting in MANUAL mode and your images are in RAW file format.
Look for and photograph these 6 things:
  1. something in soft light (look for a shaded area)
  2. something in harsh light
  3. something from a bug's eye view
  4. something with texture
  5. something that shows movement (think about how shutter speed affects movement)
  6. something with a shallow depth of field (a wide aperture yields a shallow dof)

Make sure you return to Zoom by 11:40 so we can check in before you go. If you don't finish, don't sweat it. Finish this up before class on Thursday. Come to class on Thursday ready to upload your images to your computer! We will look at them together in class.
