IMPORT PHOTOS

Picture
First, plug in either your Flash Drive or an External Hard Drive into the USB port in your computer.  This will be where you unload your images from your camera.  On your drive, create this series of Folders:
1) First, create a folder (Finder>New Folder) and title it "Digital Art"
2) Next, double click on your new folder and create 2 new folders titled:
  • Projects
  • Assignments
This is where you will store your classwork and images. Any assigned Projects will go in the Projects folder, labeled in their corresponding folder (ex: Project 1 - Name Game). Any in-class assignments will be saved to the Assignments folder (ex: Assignment 1 - Get Photos).

Within the Projects folder, create a folder for your assigned project. (ex: P1 Name Game). Inside each project folder, you will create 3 subfolders:
  • Originals - this is where you will import all of the photographs you made for your project.
  • Processed - this is where you will store your photographs that have been edited in Camera RAW or Photoshop.
  • Finals - this is where you will store your final, edited photographs that you will turn in to me.

Next, take the memory card from your camera and insert it into the SD card port in your computer or card reader. Do not click on "Import Photos" if an application pops up. Decline, and then open ADOBE BRIDGE to upload your photographs to your drive.
Finder>Applications>Adobe Bridge or click the Spotlight Search to search. Once the program opens, find it in the dock and right click>choose Keep In Dock.

In Adobe Bridge, you can import your images two ways:
  1. Click on the "Get Photos from Camera" icon in the top left part of the screen. Once clicked, the Photo Downloader window will pop up.
    OR
  2. Navigate to File>Get Photos From Camera. Once clicked, the Photo Downloader window will pop up.

In Photo Downloader, make sure to make all of the changes marked by the orange arrows (see images directly above and below)
  • Get Photos from:
Click on the pull-down menu and find your memory card here. Then, select ADVANCED DIALOGUE in the bottom lefthand corner. This will bring up a dialogue box with more options like the one below.

  • Location:
Make sure to click on Choose and locate your "Originals" folder in the correct "Project" folder on your drive. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP. This is where you choose WHERE to download your photos, and you must not download them to the desktop. If you download your images to an incorrect location, you may not be able to find them in the future.
  •  Create Subfolder:
    Choose "None."
  • Rename Files:
Rename each of your lastname_firstname_projectname_ and +1. AGAIN, THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP. If you do not rename your files, you may not be able to find them in the future.
  • Advanced Options
Select Open Adobe Bridge and Convert to DNG.** If you'd like, you may also click on Delete "Original Files" to delete all images on your card. However, if you choose this option, they will be deleted forever from your memory card.
  •  Apply Metadata:
Change to Basic Metadata under "Template to Use" You may write your name under "Creator" and © 2017 (Control+G=copyright symbol) under "Copyright."

After applying all of the correct settings, Click Get Photos, and your photos will begin downloading on your drive, into your "Originals" folder, and off of your camera.

**a note about DNG: DNG, or Digital Negative, is a universal and publicly available file format that is backwards compatible, meaning that this type of file can be read by any program, including older versions Adobe Bridge and Photoshop. It is a good idea to always convert your Camera RAW files to DNG. If you are working with an older version of Adobe Bridge and Photoshop (the Mac Lab iMacs are running on Cs5.1, an older version of the Adobe Suite), your camera's proprietary RAW file format may not be recognizable and your files cannot be viewed or opened in Bridge/Photoshop. If this is the case, you must convert them first to DNG so that you may view and edit them.

When you are finished, don't forget to eject your SD card and Drive correctly!
