Period 7 -- Critical Analysis #14

2/15/2019

For today's critical analysis, you will complete a self-assessment of your stop motion project. Be sure to post your writing as a comment to your correct class period's blog post. This is due by midnight for a grade!

Pull up your final stop motion video that you turned in (you may locate it in your Google Drive folder). Read through the questions below and think about them as you watch your video.

Once you have watched through your video, answer each question below in complete sentences. Write at least 1 paragraph per each question, 5 sentences minimum per paragraph.

  1. Describe what your stop motion project is about. Be specific. What happens in the project? Is there a story being told? What was your intention or idea for your project? What do you want the audience to get from watching your video?
  2. Name some areas where you were successful in creating/completing this project. Be sure to write in complete sentences.
Examples: I told a complete story in my final video.
I was able to manipulate my objects from shot to shot, creating a smooth animation.
  3. Name some areas where you were unsuccessful in creating/completing your project. These can be areas where you see room for improvement. Be sure to write in complete sentences.
Examples: I wish that I had shot my images in a better lighting scenario.
I wish that I had included audio with my final video.
  4. Finally, describe what you might do differently if you had more time to go back and work on your project. Would you go with a new idea? Would you reshoot some of your images with better lighting, in a different location, etc? Would you give yourself more time to complete your shooting? Be specific.

Your analysis will be graded on:
  • meeting minimum length requirements
  • depth of organization
  • evaluation and completion of assessment questions
  • grammar/punctuation

My stop motion project is about a character who walks around and encounters issues with what she is wearing. Based on her situation the character realizes that their clothes aren’t adequate. As she encounters different things, her clothes change to better match her surroundings. She first is too hot, then wants to go swimming, then wants to rest, and finally has to find an outfit for a party. I want the audience to feel a connection towards the character as they may have experienced something similar before.

I was able to make clean cuts in between each scene. When the character changes, it is a smooth transition. I was also able to create a very smooth animation with little to no bumps and big changes. I did this by going from shot to shot with small movements so it looks like the character and background items are actually moving. And I got a good shot of the character falling into the pool, so it looks pretty accurate.

A few scenes were blurry and not in very good focus. When the character walked away at one point, the camera was focused on something else. And when the character walked, her knees were lifted a bit too high and it looked unnatural. It wasn’t very clear how she changed at one point when she was getting ready for the party. The switch in that scene wasn’t very well put together and as a result, it looked messy.

If I went back and changed some things I would make sure that the camera was correctly focused before I took every shot. This would better improve the overall quality of the video. I would redo the walking scenes and make sure that it looked real and accurate. At some points, the lighting changes mid-scene and I would make sure that that was fixed. Also I would switch up some of the ways that she moved from scene to scene. It looked a bit too jerky and not as smooth as I would’ve liked.

My stop motion project was about an orange that was hot. The orange went on a journey to find a place where he could cool off. My idea for the project was to use an orange and show it going on a journey. I do not know what I want the audience to get out of my movie. I think that they should just be impressed that an orange could make such a journey.

I was successful in telling my whole story in my movie. I think that I was able to show the orange falling multiple times really well. I wasn’t in a controlled environment and I was able to get over those difficulties. I successful in putting all of the shots together. I was finally successful in staying with my story while never having to look at my storyboard packet.

I was very unsuccessful in my first quarter of my movie. My photos weren’t really even and they were all slanted. I didn’t really have my camera focused in all of the shots. I also did not check the brightness of my photos before every time I took a photo. There were also a lot of times that people were shown on the side of the screen.

There are many things I would have done differently. I would have used a tripod in the beginning. I would have checked all of my photos beforehand for saturation and for people. I would have taken just a few more photos. I also believe I could have done more with the ending.

My stop motion project is a about a rubber duck named Pierre. On an ordinary day just like any other jesus comes down. Jesus tell Pierre how he should go on an adventure. Pierre thinks about what jesus said and finally does. Pierre makes his way to the “chungle” where he finds himself letting go and having fun.

I believe overall I did a decent job on the project. I believe the beginning when Pierre is turning in a circle is done very smoothly. This was done with very little mess ups and mistakes. I also believe my video concept was overall good. this is because the story being told is very simple and understandable.

I believe there were a few mess ups as well in the stop motion video. One time is when Jesus is coming in to the picture. At this time there are some not so focused photos. I also wish i could have shot a better ending as well. I would have rather made a better ending.

I would have rather had some more time to shoot photos and reshot some more photos. Like I said before I would have put more work into the ending. This is because I had rather the ending make more sense than just going straight to saying goodbye. I would have loved to add more sound as well. Overall I think if I had more time I would have made a more successful stop motion film.

My stop motion project is called YUmm YUmm. It is about making the perfect dinner. Instead of being basic and just chopping up food, my food turned into candy. First I chop up a cucumber and it turns into slices of cucumber made of M&M. Then I chopped up and union and cracked an egg. The ending of the video has a smiley face banana.

In my stop motion project I told a full story and it was easy to understand. I also successfully made it longer than one minute thirty seconds. I put sound effects that made since and nice music to go along with it. I also made the pieces fluently into candy. My stop motion project is appealing to the eye and “ Satisfying”.

In a few scenes, of my stop motion video, the frames were a little blurry. I ended up having to delete those and making that scene a little shorter. If I had more time i would go back and reshoot those few scenes. When I had originally shot the cucumber scene, it looked messy and the cucumber kept moving. I then had to reshoot, the next weekend. This made the process longer and more difficult.

If I had more time I would only reshoot the part of the plates swirling, besides that I like my stop motion project a lot. I think its creative and cute. I originally wanted to do a love story, but thought my candy and food idea was better. Some people may not like my project, but i’m very proud of how I did. I’m also glad it’s finished and looking better than I expected.

My project is about a day of relaxing at home. In this project, my mom is the main focal point along with the other objects in the video. My intention was to show what a regular relaxing Sunday would look like. I want the audience to get relaxed and enjoy the video. This video is interesting, because it has a lot of different objects in it. The main one is food.

I was successful in completing all of my images on the right day. I also turned it in on time. I successfully combined all of the images in order to make a successful video. It turned out to be a great video that took me a lot of time to make. My video successfully showed what a Sunday is like.

I was unsuccessful in using the right lighting. I was also unsuccessful in taking the pictures at the right time. For example, when I was taking pictures of the popcorn. My camera didn’t take all of the pictures from start to finish. Also, when i took a picture of the TV, the light of the camera reflected back. When i took picture of the screen when it was on, the lighting was kind of weird, but it worked out fine in the end.

If i could go back in order to fix some of my project, I definitely would. I would do it outside instead of instead in order to better show what a Sunday is like. I would also do different types of food instead of what I did. I could also use a different person in the video. I would also give myself more time to do this, in order to be able to shoot more images over a longer time period instead of cramming it all into three weekends.

My stop motion project is about a paper airplane, Pete. He is made and goes on a big adventure. He flies by all sorts of crazy things and places. He hits a tree and gets wrinkled and hurt. His is maker finds him, fixes him and throws him off to another adventure.

I think I was successful in coming up with a creative idea. I hadn't seen it anywhere before and came up with it all on my own. I also like the music I chose or it. I knew since the beginning that I wanted to use that song because it has dramatic parts and so does my story. It didn't just sound the same the whole way through like others I had heard.

I thought I was going to be a little short on time because I was absent one day that we worked on it. I was stressed out but I ended up finishing it on time. I wish I could have done more when I was shooting my images. It was hard to get the plane to do some things because the wire wasn’t long enough. I tried to get it to do a loop but after trying to get the images and failing several times I was running out of time and just didn’t put it in the final video.

If I could go back I would like to have smoother transitions between my scenes. I feel like it might have been to fast transitioning to different scenes but I wasn’t sure how to fix it. Maybe it was just my eyes playing tricks but it seemed a little fast and I didn’t want whoever was watching to miss something. I also with I could have somehow added the loop-de-loop. I didn't know how to make it look smooth and I ended up not putting it in.

My project is about fruits being made into a fruit salad. The story is of multiple fruits being magically sliced up and being put into a bowl. My intention for this project was to make a fun project that has some of my interests in it, I was going to do something with my mustang but the hood is off and there I took out the engine so I couldn't really do that. I like fruit a lot and I was honestly very hungry shooting so when I was thinking about doing something I thought fruit. I want the audience to have a vivid sense of fruit being all made up in a bowl. I was thinking like, when you see a nice juicy steak on TV and you kind of get a taste in your mouth and you are suddenly craving steak, I wanted that to happen with this video.

I was really successful in moving the actual objects like the knife and the bowl, for the bowl moving scene I got a long piece of clear tape and I taped it to the bowl and on the other end to my finger and I just tugged my finger and held the shutter down. The knife moving was also pretty easy because I just held the shutter down and cut the banana. Mostly all of the videos were very smooth and turned out very well. There weren't that many movements in it so it was pretty easy. This was of the easier projects because the shutter feature really helped.

Some things I wasn't good at doing was the temptation to just eat all of the blueberries, just joking but, it was hard because every weekend I had to buy new fruit because either my family ate all of it or it went bad. I definitely should've planned better. Another hard part was when i wiped the fruit off of the cutting board i had to go back and forth to get the ones i didn't get and it looked sorta weird on the camera. I ended up moving my hand really slow and just trying to take my time. It came out a little weird but overall i am happy with it.

If i had more time to go back and change things i would've changed my whole project. I like the fruit but my true passion is automobiles and engines, basically old muscle cars. I wanted to do something where i would take the engine apart but my hands would be very greasy and the engine is like 54 years old so all of the oil galleries are horribly dirty. I would also have to drive it after and that's not possible with the parts i have. Overall i really enjoyed this project and will probably do a lot of those little stop motion projects over the summer! I enjoyed learning a lot and it was super fun

My stop motion video is about skittles. The main character was an orange skittle who didn't fit in with the rest. It starts when the skittles go to spell candy and said skittle doesn’t fit in. The rest of the skittles continue on without him. This makes him become sad. The rest of the video is him on the journey to happiness.

In this project there were many places where I was successful. This includes creating a video that was longer than necessary, taking WAY over the necessary amount of pictures, and successfully creating a video with sound. By taking over 14000 pictures it allowed me to create a smoother video. This was because I could have the fps be faster, so my video would flow smoother. Another thing I was proud of was the sound I added. I think that the music I found fits my project well.

The main thing that I would change about my video was the lighting. Throughout the three weeks we shot I took my pictures in the same area with the same lights and everything. However, I took them in my bedroom where there is a window. Throughout the three weeks I had to take the images at different times. This made some of my images darker and some lighter than others.

If I could go back and reshoot I would’ve shot in a more controlled environment. Although I took my pictures in the same area with the same lights. I took them in my bedroom where there is a window. I would’ve been nice to have a place with no windows and professional lights. Even though I white balanced my images when they are next to each other they don’t look exactly the same.

My project is about a useful, but not powerful, not powerful hero named Repairman. He can repair items to their original position with the flick of his wrist or a wave of his hand. This of course happens over a small period of time to show how it fixes itself. He’s a hero not magician. I wanted to do this project as I like to fix stuff and take them apart and I thought that it would look cool.

I feel that my project looked relatively interesting. I think this way because my project could only work this way with stop motion as a controller and a rubik’s cube can’t fix itself. I don’t like how my project doesn’t have a real story. It instead tells more Repairman’s adventures. This and that the frames aren’t relating more than that they all have Repairman in them.

I was successful in making most of my “fixes” appear relatively realistic. I also like most of my framing and lighting. But I felt unsuccessful in my Rubik’s cube scene. I feel that it isn’t successful because at the start another face is facing the camera and it took a while to solve. This and the changing light during all of the scenes made it look worse and choppy. I wanted to do an actual solve for it instead of mixing it up and playing it in reverse. I ended up actually solving it but it is hard doing it one move at a time and caused me to mess up a couple times.

If I had more time I would redo the whole rubik’s cube scene. This would make me feel better about the quality of the project. I would also like to show some scenes of me fixing other small stuff as transitions. This could be waving a hand passed a dirty rail and it becoming shiny. This would make it flow better. My final edition would be a problem that Repairman can’t fix to add a story or a problem.

Critical Analysis #14

In this project, I have portrayed a man killing one of his “enemies.” As it turns out though, this enemy had a life before his death. He played and was actually quite sweet at heart. This is shown in the scenes after his death. He plays around laying down on a table, and never meant any harm to the man; he just wanted to play.

Yes, I told a complete story in my video. I was successful in the plot of the project. The execution could have been better though, and I know this. As I moved through the project and gained experience, I learned not to take multiple pictures at once. This became easy once I got the hang of it.

I was unsuccessful in transforming my ideas into good work. Although I had a story in my head, it was difficult for me to execute. Also, I learned that I am a procrastinator. Next time, I will budget my time wisely. Lastly, I must learn how to become better at using Adobe Premiere.

I would do many things differently if I could go back. I would take pictures when they were supposed to be taken. I would also pay more attention in class so that I would know how to use Adobe software. Also, I would have a plot in my head from the beginning of the project. I would avoid just coming up with one halfway through everything.

My stop motion project is about living pears that wonder around my house I used pears because I wanted to make this project different from others. I enjoyed doing this because I like doing stop motion projects. The story that is being told is about pears that wonder around the house but return to their original spot. It took my around 6 hours to do this project because of the different lighting, and different settings I used. What I want the audience to get from watching this video is that dreaming is a way of escaping reality and becoming a new person.

I was successful to do this project in my house. I used my house because since I've done many projects there, I m used to creating things in my house. My house was the perfect setting to make this project because of all the different lighting I have and different things I can use to make my projects more realistic. I think I told a story in my video because all the images that I shot, became a story. The is what I wanted to make, a project that was different from others.

I wish I had used my backyard fro another scene. My backyard is perfect fro making things with good lighting. I also wish I shot scenes of more rooms or places around the house. I wanted to use as many places as possible to make this realistic but at the same time non realistic. Things went not as planned but at the end I changed my mind.

If I had more time to work on this project, I would try to use as many settings as possible. Also to do what I first wanted to do and that was to make something using either my clothes or shoes. After hours of shooting images, it payed off at the end. I would also want to shoot more images with better lighting because I felt like I didn't use the right lighting for some scenes. I enjoyed creating this project because stop motion is one of the things I enjoy doing.
