© Gregory Crewdson
Today you will be writing about this photograph made by artist Gregory Crewdson.

Read this short biography for Crewdson before you write:

Gregory Crewdson is an American photographer best known for staging cinematic scenes of suburbia to dramatic effect. His surreal images are often melancholic or disturbing, offering ambiguous narrative suggestions and blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, thanks to the artist’s painstaking preparation of elaborate sets, lighting, and cast. “My pictures are about a search for a moment—a perfect moment,” Crewdson has explained. Born on September 26, 1962 in Brooklyn, NY, the artist works with large production teams to scout and shoot his images. His work has been exhibited widely, notably including solo exhibitions at Gagosian Gallery in New York, the San Diego Museum of Art, and White Cube in London, among many others. A 1988 graduate of the Yale School of Art, he has served on its faculty since 1993 and is currently the director of its graduate studies in photography. The artist lives and works in New York, NY.

This image is of a man, on his knees in a living room of a house. There is a mound of grass built up on the left side of the image, and the rest of the ground is full with mat-like grass. The man appears to be working on rolling up all of this grass and adding it to the mound. The main color being used is green, but there is also a little bit of a warm yellow from the lamp, and the man’s shirt is white. Overall this image is on the dark side, but it still has a good level of exposure and only a tiny bit of shadow clipping on the far left side and the bottom right corner.

It’s not a very pleasing image to look at first glance, but once you look at it more it is pretty cool. The subject is slightly off center. I think that the photographer was sitting on the ground as well, and he appears to be about eight feet away from the subject. A deep depth of field is being used, although the very back of the photograph isn’t completely clear, it is not blurred. The main visible lines like the ones on the ceiling and on the wall don’t direct the eye towards the subject. However, the large mound of grass on the left side of the frame slopes down right toward the subject which helps with directing the eye.

I think the main theme is loneliness and the life of a working class person. This image was taken in a suburb, and I think that this photograph depicts someone living by himself in a town where everyone else around them has a family. This man also just looks so tired; like he is working too much for his own good. Based on all of the cigarettes and trash on the ground, it also looks like he has been there working for a long time. This photograph makes me think of a dream I had once where I went downstairs in my house and saw a huge mess that I desperately had to clean up.

At first, I didn’t really like this image and didn’t see anything special in it. However, after looking at it more, I realized that it was pretty cool. I think this photographer was successful in making this image. There are so many different things to look at which are interesting and make the viewer want to look at it more. It is also successful in the way that it puts across a story to the audience.

This photographer, Gregory Crewdson used an 8 by 8 film camera on this project. I also think that he used composting to get the lighting and everything else to go together well. I think he took one of the the whole scene without the light on and the man, one of the whole scene with just the light on, and then another with the man in it. Once the films came out, he probably scanned them to edit the photos electronically and put them all together into one image. All together, he successfully made this really interesting photograph after all of that work which is really cool to know about how he did it.

This image is of a men who is putting grass down on the floor of a house. The man looks like he has found something in the ground under a grass. The grass is in the house along with many things like rocks and sticks. The colors in the image are green, and then some wood colors in the background. The lighting that was used was a studio set-up. The whole image was a set-up to tell its own story. There is a man in the photo. The abstract thing about the photo is that the grass and rocks are inside the house. Nature usually isn't in the house. The man looks like he just found something, there is some light source projecting on his face from the ground which gives me the idea that he just found something valuable like treasure.

It is a very interesting photo to look at because of the detail and oddness of the photo. It makes you ask a lot of questions. The rule of thirds is being used because he isn't perfectly in the middle of the image. The point of view is from the level of the man on his knees. It is a normal human eye perspective . This photo has a deep depth of field because everything is in focus. This image isn't balanced It is asymmetrical. Some of the lines on the brick wall draws your eyes to the man and the wall been on the ceiling can point to the angle he is sitting in. The frame cuts off the rest of the room and a grass hill.

The theme could be he has been looking for something too. His shirt is dirty which could mean that he has been on this journey to find what her has been looking for. Yes, there is definitely a story being told behind the image. The story might be different for each view but there is one. The artist made the photo to tell a story that he wanted. Ths photo does remind me of a show called stranger things for some reason. I think its the environment setting that makes me think of that show. It doesn't question political, ethical, or social beliefs but i do think that it questions creativity and reality and how they combine.

I do like this photo and how people looking at the photo can use their imagination to create a story to go along with the photo. Or how each person sees different details differently and can make different assumptions. This photo is successful because of the uniqueness the photo brings to the viewer. I also liked the way the man tells the story, there are so many outlets and paths that your brain can take to come up with a story of your own. I also like how clear the photo is. It brings more of a dream like setting.

The artist creating this photo must of taken a lot of work and effort. And thinking that the artist set up a whole room with all the little details. Like for example the tiny pictures in the room or the things that are placed on the side of the lamp. I also think it's interesting how the money he makes off the photo is to pay for his next production shows how passionate they are for their work. I like how the photo shows mystery and gloominess to the set. Even the colors remind me of a darker thriller of a book or movie.

In this image by Gregory Crewdson there are many strange unusual matters happening. There is a man in the center of the photo sitting inside and rolling grass out inside. The walls of the house seem to look like a old home with floral paper. There's a piano placed up against the wall and a lamp . On the ground the man seems to be covering something up in the middle. I think there's also trash on the floor from a long time ago. Im this image Gregory is using warmer tones in this image. In this image he is also using a studio setup light causing drastic shadows and high contrast.

I enjoy this image, I think it's different and stands out from other images. In this image the rule of thirds is being used because the man sitting down is not in the middle but slightly placed to the right. The angle Greg is using is as sif another person is also sitting seeing what the man is doing. In this image a short depth of field is being used because the whole image is in focus. In this image the leading lines from the trim of walls are pointing towards the man, causing your attention to be drawn their. In this image the only thing being cropped out is more grass and more of the house.

I think that Greg was trying to tell a story through his art. I think Greg was telling a story of a man who is trying to hide his past. With the cigarettes on the floor and him trying to cover the flooring with grass. I think this symbolizes him covering his past and moving forward. The man does look serious and on a mission. I think this image is supposed to be serious and tell story about this man.I think this image is both interesting and noteworthy.

I overall enjoy this image. I think Greg did a great job with the lighting. I like how this image has dramatic shadows. I also enjoy the story behind this image. I like how this image is unrealistic but somehow he makes it look real. I enjoy everything about this image and the colors he used. Overall I think Greg was successful in this image and I respect all the work he probably had to do to get the perfect image.

In this image by Greg a lot of time and effort went into making this image. A lot of people probably helped make this image possible. From the lighting guy to a props guy to probably even a makeup person for the cast members. Then after taking these pictures they have to edit the pictures. With the different layers and compositing. A lot of time and effort went into making these images and I think it was probably hard for Greg not getting every little detail you want right, but with the help of the other people. They made it possible.

The image appears to be taken inside a dark room. This room looks dilapidated and messy, and there are a few things that do not belong. The glaring one is that the loor appears to be made out of grass. In the center of the image is a man with dirt all over him. He seems to be doing yard work and cleaning up the area, even though it is inside. The image is comprised of dark colors. The grass is presented in a very dark tone. The lighting in the image appears to be simply a dimly lit lamp and barely lit overhead lights. The objects included in the image are simply the furnishings that you would find in an ordinary house. The one abnormality is the grass that is being worked on by the man.

This composition is puzzling to me. I cannot decide what to make of it. It is a surreal scene that is not seen in an ordinary composition. There may be a story that the artist is attempting to tell in this photo, but it is difficult to decipher. Perhaps the artist had a dream and is trying to tell that story. The artist took the photo from a level spot to the man’s head. The depth of field is deep because you can see all the details being shown in the image. The focal point is the man in the center of the image.

There are few lines in this image, but the ones that are present point towards the focal point, the man in the center of the image. The image is not necessarily balanced because there is much more in the left side of the image than in the right of the image. The subject does not fill the frame, leaving space for the rest of the items in the image. The main point of the image is to get a lot of the grass in the frame. The positive space is the grass and the man. The furnishings of the house are the negative space.

The theme of the image I think is of a surreal vision or dream that the author had at one point in time. This may be part of the story that the author may be trying to tell. Perhaps the author was always laboring around the house that he grew up in, or the struggle to balance activities or landscapes. The author may have fabricated this image to recreate one of those situations so he could capture it forever. This image does not remind me of anything in particular. Perhaps this is because the image is so specific. This question may aim to bring to light the labors that people have to undergo while they want to have a break and spend time with friends and family.

This image is very interesting to me. This is due simply due to the specific nature of the image. I like this image because of this reason. I think that this image is successful because the artist must have spent a lot of time and put forth a lot of effort in order to just capture this image.

This is an image by gregory crewdson. He was is an american photographer that lives in New York. The image is of an older man rolling up grass. The weird part of the image is that he is inside a house. The grass was staged, that means it was set up on its own. It almost seems like a movie set. The image is dark, maybe a darker exposure used by the camera. The man is wearing a white t shirt and jeans. His clothes are dirty. In the corner, there is a lamp that is on. That is one of the only lights in the room. Towards the left, the grass turns into a hill. The hill looks like it is going up to the ceiling.

The main colors i see are green, brown, and yellow. The green is the grass on the ground, the brown is the furniture and wood used for the walls and ceiling, and lastly, the yellow is the bright lamp on the right. The image looks like the house belonged in a suburban area, in the mid to late 1900’s. The furniture and wall paper are old. The wallpaper is that flowery design you see on most of the older homes you see. On the ground is some bones, or at least that's what it looks like. Towards the back of the image is a door that looks like it leads to a bedroom because you can barely see a dresser in the room.

There is a light on the bottom of the image that is shining on the man. The man is looking at the light curious as to what it is. The light he is looking at is white, instead of a yellow color. This looks like a family home because in the corner, you can see a piano, although maybe the adults used the piano. The photographer is using another person to take the picture. This is not a self portrait.

This image looks like a composite because there are different lights coming from different areas. He is not using a digital camera either, he is using a film camera. On the back right wall is a fireplace. It is average size and is not producing a fire at the moment. I think is image is very interesting because it is weird to have as much grass as this man does in a home like this. This the reason that i think that the image is staged and was like this on purpose to take the image.

To conclude, I like this image. It is very interesting which in a lot of ways, can make an image beautiful. Crewdons images are very noteworthy; they are worth looking and writing at. The image almost looks like it is the set of a movie, which I really like. On the ground, on top of the grass, it looks as if there is a bunch on cigarettes spilled everywhere. I think that represents that the subject is a smoker. Overall, I liked this image.

Critical Analysis #11
Specific
The over growing green in the image with the yellow orange background creates a contrast within the image. There seems to be a white light coming from below shining on the man. The man seems to be in his late 50’s and is in a dirty white t-shirt and some blue jeans. There is a piano, lamp, brick wall, bush, grass, and door leading to another room give the image dimension and realistic attributes. There are several lights shining up in several parts of the image, which gives the image a great effect.
Form
The image is very pleasing to look at. The whole dynamic of the image just gives a very professional and realistic movie scene. The photographer shot this image straight forward and with no apparent angle however the subject is at an angle kneeling down and the focal point of the image. The image is shot in a deep depth of field to give the viewer a full 180 of everything going on in the image. The lights above and the lines of the grass with the bushes all lead to the focus point in the image, which is the man.
The image is not balance because the man is not entered. There are more things in the left side of the image than on the right side of the image. He does not fill up the whole image. There is plenty of extra space around him that make up the whole image. The image cops off the rest of the bush. The man is the positive space while the rest is negative.
Content
The theme is about a man who is trapped. He is from the small suburban town and his job is being a gardener which he will never be able to run from. This will be his job forever. Until, he finds something special (the light shining on him). His face seems to be expressing a look of curiosity. This reminds me of the elementary in my hometown. No one leaves and everyone is trapped inside. This was true to me until I found the light, which was when came to TMI for a science fair competition. I found a way out of my prison. A way out from keeping the brutality of what would have happened if I stayed behind me.
Evaluate
I love the perception this image provides to its viewers. This image is so beautiful and powerful to me because regardless of how everyone interpret it, anyone can relate or find some truth about themselves through this image. As much as I think the photographer was successful, I am unsure of the artist’s motives with creating this image. However, it is easy to interpret the image to relate to each person so I guess Gregory Crewdson was successful.

The image is of a man who is putting dirt and grass in his house. The colors that are being used are dark colors I feel like dark colors are being used because the image is not supposed to look happy or cheerful. The lighting is artificial there are dark shadows. The objects included are a few lamps in the background, trash on the floor, a piano, and some picture frames. The action being performed in the image is he placing grass on the ground and piling it up to make it seem like a hillside on the left side of the image.

The image is a bit pleasing to look at there is not too much light or to many shadows.I feel like the rule of thirds is not being used because the man which is the main subject is in the center. The photographer took the photo facing directly at the man rolling grass and the point of view is in third person. The depth of field i would have to guess is shallow depth of field cause the hillside is in focus parts of the background are two and also the man.The lines are on the wall behind him and some on the ceiling for me hey point to the man.The subject does fill the entire frame.

I feel like the theme of this image could be insanity, because most would look at a guy with grass and dirt on the floor in the shape of a hillside to be insane. The story being told is probably he has been doing this for several days with the scale of it and the sight of cigerete buds on the ground show that he must have a lot of stress and anxiety doing this. I feel like the artist watched Close Encounters Of The Third Kind when he made this image. This image reminds me exactly of the seen in the movie where the dad is putting the dirt, chicken wire, grass, and bricks in his home to make a sculpture of a mountain in arizona called devils fall, that was implanted in his mind by the aliens.

I love the photograph, because i remember watching Close Encounters Of The Third Kind when I was about six years old, my mom also watched it when she was six, and also my little sister we watched it this year when it came out again at the movie theater. The photograph is very successful in my opinion because the image has good lighting darks that make the image pop and it resembles the movie.

The image is a picture of a man in a house with grass everywhere, and he is all dirty. In the image it looks like the man is digging in the ground or just rolling up the grass. There is a lot of greens being used because of the overgrown wildlife in the house, and also a lot of darkness is being used to show that the house is old and probably hasn’t been used in a very long time. The man looks like he has been all in the dirt because of how dirty his shirt is which makes me think he has something valuable buried under the floor that he needs to get. There is also a lot of trash on the floor which makes me think that the house is old and abandoned.

I think the image is pleasing to look at because of the colors used. More than half of the image is green which is a color that I personally really like, so for me I like the colors in the image a lot. The rule of thirds is not really being used, but the man gets pretty close to being where the intersecting lines should be. The focal point of the image is where the man and the hole is because that is where the middle of the image is, and it’s where the main subject of the image is. At the edge of the image there is a giant hill that is cut off, we don’t know if the entire image is grassy or just this one spot.

I think an idea in the image is that he is digging up something valuable that he buried long ago. I think he might be in some sort of financial struggle, and whatever is in the chest that he buried will get him out of it. I think the artist made the image to tell a story, but we have to make the story based on what we think is happening in the photo. I think the image reminds me of something I would see in a movie. I think the kind of movie the image would be in is some sort of murder/mystery kind of movie.

The image is in my opinion very interesting and intriguing to look at. Like I mentioned before the colors that are used in the image are some of my favorites, so that makes me like it even more. I think the photographer did make a successful photograph. The photo is successful in making a story that can be interpreted in any way the person looking at it wants. The image is a thousand stories in one picture.

I think there probably was a lot of preparation and money put into this photo. Either they had to buy a lot of artificial grass or they just took a long time gathering up enough grass for the floor in the photo. They also had to completely trash an entire house, so either they probably just used some old house that was abandoned. They probably just stacked a bunch of things on top of each other, and then put the grass on top of it to make the hill. Then they probably just made a shirt dirty, and stuck it on the man.

The image is a larger scale, higher budget production image by Gregory Crewdson. The image is of a man rolling out grass. The strange thing is that the man is rolling out the grass inside of a house. The background of the image is composed of the back wall of the room and off to the left and in the front of the image, is a hill. The image is very dimly lit, with most of the light coming from dim lamps, and lights from the ceiling. The light in the image all has a very warm yellow tone, except for the harsher light, coming from a hole in the floor. In the photo, the man is looking down into the hole, and it is shining a harsher light, up and into the room from below.

In the general center of the image, everything notable happens. The man is seen working, rolling out the grass, and the hole in the floor is there too. In the center, there is the focal point of the image of the man. From there, the next thing that jumps out is the hole. What really separates the man and the hole is the difference in the quality of light in the man and the hole as opposed to the quality of light in the rest of the image.

In the image, I think that the intent was to create and put together two different stories/scenes and create a new moment. I don’t think that the image was meant to tell a story given how its lack of realism. However it's not just its lack of realism that stops it from creating a cohesive story or tell something about the man, but rather its inability to create a fictional scene as well. I think that this image as well as some others from Gregory Crewdson are meant to exist in the area between realistic and fiction.

I like this image. I think it did what it was intended to do, create a notable moment. I don’t think it was able to tell a story, or express something about the man like a realistic image. However, it wasn’t really like other fictional images in the way that they can create their own story. Neither of those things were what the photo was meant to accomplish however, and I think that the image rather takes a moment in particular and leaves us to interpret and make our own story about why what is happening in the image is taking place.

The image, like the others from Gregory Crewdson are large scale productions. He spends much time, money, and resources preparing each scene. He has teams of people working to create the image and take what he sees, and turn it into a realistic looking scene. In addition to That, this image in particular is a composition and it is made to incorporate completely different lighting types and qualities into one image.

This photograph, taken by Gregory Crewdson, depicts a male subject in the middle of a living room laying down grass. The entire floor of the room appears to be covered in dirt and grass. The subjects shirt is dirty from the hole he had been diggin in the middle of the room. And the floor and the subject are cigarettes and other trash. Mainly browns, greens and creams are utilized in this image. In this photo there are two type of light, the yellow-ish light coming from the lamp and other light sources throughout the photo and the bright white like coming from the hole, illuminating the subject.

In the background of the image there is a fireplace, antique piano, photographs, and a cabinet. On top of the cabinet there is a lamp, rotary phone, water glasses and medicine. If the viewer looks closely at the two larger photos on the wall, you can see landscapes with trees. On top of the piano is a music book, a coffee mug, and what appears to be figurines. From the cigarettes spread around the subject and the two destroyed packs the audience can assume that the subject smokes a lot or he has been laying down the grass for a long time.

The rule of thirds is not being used in this image, however, the subject is slightly off-center. The photograph was shot in a third person point of view from eye level. The photo was taken in a deep depth of field. The focal point of the image is the subject and the image is not being framed by anything. There are many lines in the photograph that direct the viewer’s attention to the subject. The most obvious use of leading lines in the images are the tiles of the fireplace, piano, and cabinet. The subject does not fill the frame , however, the rest of the frame is filled with objects that contribute to the quality and personality of the image. At the edge of this image there is a pile of grass which the frame partly cuts off.

A theme being conveyed in this image could be his or mankind’s hypocritical relationship with Earth and the environment. Humans welcome and invite the environment into their homes yet turn around and destroy it. This image reminds me of something out of two different movies. The subject and the floor of the photograph appear to be out of something along the lines of an action adventure movie almost like a grave robber. The background of the image looks the a room out of a horror movie. The photograph could challenge people to rethink the way they treat the environment. This photo is interesting because of contrast of settings and the themes it conveys.

I like this image because of the contrast of settings. The personality of the background of the image has a totally different personality than the foreground of the image. The background has an old, antiquated, creepy feeling about it. The foreground appears serene, a bit ominous, and filled with emotion. Also the different colors of the lights makes it seem as if the photo is a composite of two photographs from two different time periods. I think that this photograph is successful because it at least makes the viewer think about the environment and at most the viewer is so moved that they try to make a change about the way the environment is treated.

So this image is of a guy kneeling, either rolling up or setting down some topsoil, yet the topsoil is being set up inside of his house, in what looks to be a living room. The topsoil has some tears in it throughout the room, where light shines through, especially on the guy. There is also a mound of spare topsoil to the guys right, in a pile that stretches to the top of the room. The living room contains a nightstand with a lit lamp on top and a desk. The desk, oddly enough, has a book of sheet music open and on display on top of it. The guy himself is only wearing a t-shirt and jeans, and both look fairly worn and stained from working for a while.

This image must have required a lot of hours put into it, judging especially from the bio of the artist. As the bio stated, the photo was built similarly to how a movie set would be build. The image was probably composed similar to how it is shown: People just bought an old house and put a bunch of topsoil in it. A significant amount of effort would have to be put into just getting all the topsoil into place, let alone laying it down. The floor is also torn up, not from being old but probably a bunch of people with crowbars or something came in and tore it up. After all this, they had to have the guy wear the right clothes and get in just the right spot with just the right expression. Then, and only then, could they take the photo, which makes it a bit more valuable because of how much effort went into it.

This image does implement the rule of thirds, with the guy on the right side and the doorway to the rest of the house on the left. Despite using the rule of thirds, the image is very asymmetrical; it has too much clutter from the topsoil and the moved objects. It also has a fairly deep depth of field, as one can see not only the guy and the living room that he is in but also the room behind the door. The subject, the guy, clearly leaves enough room for the rest of the room (ha) so that one is able to see the topsoil throughout the place. The main lines, coming from the orientation of the desks and the pieces of wood one one side of the wall, all converge on where the guy is.

There’s clearly a story here, yet what it is is difficult to tell because of how ambiguous the image is. Is the man burying something or digging something up/ Perhaps there was once something lost in this abandoned house, and the guy finally dug it up. Maybe this is the guys house, and he just wanted to use topsoil instead of carpet (unlikely). Or, perhaps the guy is trying to bury something beneath the topsoil, maybe a memory, maybe a box or something, who knows? The ambiguity in the image leaves a lot to guess at, which makes it fairly interesting.

Overall, I do like this image, not only because it tells a story but also because it has a fair amount of ambiguity in it. The story allows for one to think about what happened that led up to this photo of the man's world. Even better, the photo leaves much to be imagined because there is no clear motive behind why the guy has a bunch of topsoil in (presumably) his house. The main purpose of the photo seems that it is to tell a story, but not a clear cut one. It is successful in telling a story in that the guy is clearly doing something for a purpose, but whether he is digging up something or burying it leaves it open to imagination.

In this image, there is a man wearing a white shirt and gray pants, whoever his clothes look dirty and worn down. He is laying out grass , but the odd thing is that the man is in a room. This image shows that the man has been there for a while working. Below him is many worn down cigarettes. To his right is a table with a desk lamp on it. Behind him looks to be a fireplace and behind him to his left is a piano and a doorway to another room.

The man's facial expression looks tired and blank. The mood of this image seems in a way sad and tiring . He is looking at the ground in an area where the grass doesn't cover. This image must be depicting an older setting of time, because in the background there is a rotary dial phone.

There are lots of greens used in this image, besides greens there are also neutral tones. The lighting from the background is a warm orange tone. In the doorway there is light that almost looks like its coming out of the ground that is like an orange ray. The other main light that grabs my attention is the light from the area he is about to cover with grass.

The light from that ground area is reflecting onto him and his shirt. To get all of these different lighting scenarios into this image i believe there are two or more different layers and exposures of this image. It is obvious looking at this image that the subject is the man working. It is unknown to why he is working especially since he is in a house.

Overall this image is pleasing to look at, the lightings are especially pleasing to me. This image has a deep depth of field being used. The subject and the background are both fully in focus. The subject, focal point, of this image is the man. You're automatically drawn to the man especially since the light leads to him making him “glow” in a way. There does seem to be parts of the scene left out though. This image overall makes you wonder what is going on and what is in the other rooms . It crops out the area beyond the huge pile of grass. What is beyond that. This image causes the viewer to be curious.

The theme I understood from this photograph is that in a way it represented man's relationship to nature. This Image is successful and I think it is pleasing to look at.
