Period 5 -- Practice Critical Analysis

8/29/2016

Each week, we will write a critical analysis on a work of photographic art. An image will be published weekly on our class blog. Spend time studying the image and then write a detailed analysis of the photograph. Publish your analysis as a comment to the blog post; this comment should show the student’s name, time posted, and word count. The analysis must be posted to the original blog post in order to be graded.

Students will write eleven critical analyses per semester, and the lowest grade per semester will be dropped.

The picture shows a boy or a girl laying down on a bed in a hotel or an apartment. This person seems to be on a trip or coming back from one, and now he or she is watching a mysterious blue image on the television. the outside environment seems to be very bright. The color of the room seems to be a mixture of bland and bright, and the way the light from the outside enters the room gives it a bright and attractive appeal.

The picture has a good resolution, and a deep depth of field

The picture is of a boy sitting on a bed, just moving in to a hotel room.
It is using plain colors to show an old fashion type of photo.
The lighting it is the photographer is using is natural light.
The person's feet, suitcase, tv, old fashion furniture.
The person is relaxing on his/her bed watching tv.
No, the image has the perfect amount of light.
The image is focused.

This image is of somebody taking a nap in their hotel room. Plain colors are expressed in this image to draw attention to the objects.

I see that the photographer is capturing that someone is traveling and that they're in a hotel. The blue color from the tv screen really pops out in the natural lighting and plain colors of the room. The traveler is obviously lounging or relaxing after their travels and their shoes look distressed and dirty. The photo is under exposed and the depth of field his shallow.

This photograph is showing a traveler who has recently arrived at their destination as their shoes are still on. They are relaxing after presumably unpacking their bag because it is unzipped. The television is on and the room was probably inexpensive based on the simple furnishings, twin size bed, and older TV.
The natural lighting makes the photo slightly under exposed, more so around the corners of the room. The bedspread and television screen provide brighter colors compared to the rest of the beige-y room.

The image is of a person lying on a bed, watching television. It looks like this setting is in a hotel room. This photo was definitely meant to represent an old time period because of the old television and suitcase. The photo is using browns I think to represent the coordinating colors that are in most hotel rooms. The lighting includes shadows in the room. The objects included in the photo are a person, bed, television, suitcase, and a window. The photo is at a perfect exposure in my opinion.

A deep depth of field is being used. The theme in the image is the theme of maybe being alone and running away from your problems. The artist made this image to symbolize what I mentioned before. This image reminds me of my room because I have a suitcase like the one in this image in my room as a decoration. I like the photograph because it makes you think of why the photographer took this certain picture and only included the feet of the person on the bed.

The image shows somebody laying on a mattress on a simple, undecorated room watching an old-fashioned television that seems to be off. The window is letting natural light into the "boring-looking" room. There are many different shades of dull brown and dark orange throughout the room and the wall is painted in a rather bland greenish-beige. These colors are added to present the idea of a simple, non-luxurious, relaxing place. Only the legs and shoes of the person appear and there is a desk with a suitcase and a lamp below the television.

The image has perfect exposure, it has a deep focus, and has adequate resolution.

The frame cuts off most of the body of the person. The image is mainly asymmetrical. Even though it has dull colors and no symmetry/clear use of the rule of thirds, the image is still pleasing to the eye.

The image seems to be completely intentional and staged. To me, it represents a day of traveling finally coming to tranquility after arriving at a simple hotel/motel. This person is just reflecting on their thoughts, not even bothering to turn on the television. I have experienced this feeling of rest when I arrive to a hotel and lay on the bed after the chaos that is traveling. I find this image quite pleasing.

This image is not something that I would make my wallpaper or print as a poster, but I love the simplicity and tranquility the image brings. I believe it is a successful photograph because it captures the eye in a rather simple and pleasing way

This image shows us a person who is relaxing and simply watching TV. We know that he is in a traveling due to the image of his suitcase and is in a hotel. This photo has natural lighting, includes very mild colors has a lot of shadows but is not underexposed and is in focus.
As far as attractiveness, this photo is very pleasing to look at because of its symmetry and deep depth of field. The extra space is made up by the constant shapes that are seen (mostly squares).

The themes of this photo may vary, however I see someone who is missing home. The dreary colors depict a sad time in this persons life. A time filled with regular, ordinary objects that make this person miss the free time he had back at home. The windows describe this "free" time by letting the light slowly come back into his or her life. I like this photo because of all the simple beautiful objects placed at this scene. Even though that this does not follow the theme of the photograph, I find that the simplicity makes it interesting and worth-while.

This image shows a person laying on a bed in either an apartment or a hotel room. Some important objects we see in the photograph are the suitcase, which shows that the person is traveling, the desk, and the television, which shows that he is resting. Most of the colors here are brown, but are surprisingly bright because of the natural light. The image is perfectly exposed and has a very deep depth of field.

The form of this photo is very mysterious for many different reasons. One of which being the point of view. The point of view is from the person sitting on the bed, leaving us in awe as to what he/she looks like, and what his/her ethnicity is. The other reason this photo leaves me in wonder is the focal point. In my opinion, there almost isn't one due to the angle of the photo, pointing towards the corner. On either side of the photo we also have some of the very important objects I mentioned in my past paragraph. We notice the desk with many objects on it and then the window giving us our only view into the outside world.
The theme of this image is freedom. Many of us are always stuck inside watching television, allowing our lives to turn grey. While the outside world is calling us and waiting for us to come out and regain life. I personally like this photo because it reminds me to live life fully. I also believe it's very successful because it can speak to a younger generation, which many photographs don't speak to.

This photo taken by Stephen Shore shows a person laying on a bed in a Motel room. The photo shows the person watching on an outdated television. Under the television, there is a desk with a suitcase laying closed and a lamp placed next to it. The room has a neutral tone in it, no dark colors. The lighting in the room is from the natural lighting in the open window in the left of the room. The bedding is of sunflowers which is the brightest thing in the room.

I'm not very sure what kind of message the photographer was leaving in this photo. Maybe it was about a person sitting and not interacting with the world. He/she were probably going through something and is hiding from the world by sitting in a Motel and watching television. There is a whole world out there and this person decides to just lay in the bed. The mood of the photo is really neutral, not a very positive vibe.

This photo depicts what seems to be a traveler lying down in their hotel room bed after a day of travel. The hotel room is very basic, with one simple dresser, a small bed, and a small television. The colors in the picture include neutrals, which are pretty common for hotel rooms. Because of the assumed time of day (late afternoon or early evening), shadows are being cast across the room. Although there are dark shadows in the photo, bright sunlight coming from the window is also present.
This photo does not appear to be either underexposed or overexposed. The photo has a deep depth of field, and all of the color looks correct. The photo is in high focus and I cannot see any noticeable pixelation.
I believe this photo was very intentionally set up. No symmetry or rule of thirds is easily spotted in the photo, and the frame crops off the rest of the traveler's body above the feet. This photo is pleasing to look at because of its calm vibe.
The story being told in this image, in my opinion, is a person laying down to rest in a hotel room after a long day of travelling. They seem to have recently gotten into the hotel because of the unpacked suitcase and cleanliness of the room. I believe this photo was taken
in an older hotel due to the model of the television and the general setup of the room. This picture reminds me of the relief anybody feels when resting after a long day.
Although the picture is pleasing to look at, I wouldn't say I particularly like it. To me, there is nothing interesting to this picture. It's just a common sight with nothing special added. This simplicity may be the point of the photo, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

This image is of a person from his or hers perspective of a room. The details within the picture is a person laying on a bed, looking like he or she is resting in an old, sketchy room. The colors in this room are tan, orange, and white with a few dark shadows behind the tv set and desk. The colors in the room make the image feel that the photograph was taken during the 90s.
In my opinion I believe that the exposure of light is just right and that the photograph is focused. The photograph is pleasing to look at because of how good the quality the photograph is.
The frame of the Photograph crops off half the persons legs and the twin size bed. Im not sure what the artist of the photographs intentions were.
I honestly do not think this photograph is beautiful nor interesting because of how boring, and plan the props are being used. I do not love it or hate it but dislike it because this image does not make me think of anything. It is just simply boring to look at. This photograph is not successful.

The photo depicts an unknown person's feet presumingly lying on a bed. In front of this is a simple looking desk and chair with a suitcase, a lamp, and a television hanging over the top. I notice that the room looks old school from the outdated television set and the old school looking leather suitcase. The drapes and the bedsheets are a specific yellow color that also remind of the '60s fashion. Also, we can see that the picture is in natural lighting from the big window on the left side. The photograph is generally in focus with a deep depth of field. The photo has a sort of yellowish/ earthy tone color scheme.
I think that the mood of the photograph in general is whimsical and a relaxed setting with the feet kicked up. This also haves a general sense of homeyness at the same time. The photo might induce a feeling of homesickness or coziness from the comfort of a bedroom.

This image depicts a person's feet, as he or she crosses their legs laying on a bed, clearly relaxed in a bedroom. The bedroom looks practically empty, leading me to believe that the person might be in a hotel. Anyhow, the it seems to have the right amount of natural light, which makes the picture pleasing to look at. There seems to be a great amount of positive space in the center of the picture and the left side, which makes the picture asymmetrical. My eyes were instantly drawn to the television, because it shows the reflection of the window's outside view. I like the picture overall, because it has a sort of dreamy look to it. Mostly because it reminds me of my room back in Mexico when I was a kid.

The point of view of this picture also supports my claim of its dreaminess. The point of view is 1st person, which in my opinion makes it more personal, and enables me to relate to the picture's contents. I loved the picture. It's yellow color reminds me of the calm and mellow aspect of my childhood.

The traveler is relaxing after a long day of travel and is watching TV. The room is full of plain colors and sets a plane mood. The travelers shoes are dirty which shows that he's been walking or to many places that could've cause his shoes to get dirty. The room looks very old and empty which means that he's in a old hotel and the TV on the wall shows that it's not in this century.

This is a photo of a person lying on a hotel bed. The colors are dull because the photographer wants to put an emphasis on the person's feet and the TV. The image is correctly exposed and in focus. You know this because everything is clear and contains no grain. This is pleasing to look at because it brings a simplicity to life. The angle that the photographer used was one where it looked like the person took it. The focal point is the desk/TV. The image is balanced because everything is symmetrical.
The theme of the image is relaxation. The person is lying down on a bed resting. I believe that the artist's intention is to capture the simplicity of life. This reminds me of this one time that I spent the night in a hotel in Fort Worth. The image is noteworthy because it captures life when everything is simple and slow. I like this photo because it reminds me to slow down and focus on the little beauties in life. The photograph is successful because it captured something that has meaning and is a clear picture.

This photograph shows a man crossing his legs while looking at a television set. The objects in the room make it seem like the photo was taken in the 80s-90s. There is a wooden chair at a wooden desk with a lamp and a suitcase on it. the curtains are open letting in lots of natural light.

The man is wearing blue jeans and old white torn up converse. He is siting on a floral mattress. The walls are plain with no paintings or pictures on them. The mood of the photograph depressing gloomy.

This picture shows a person relaxing during a business trip. This person is in a motel. It is during the middle of a hot day. She/he is watching tv. The person just got there and still has there shoes on. I know this is a business trip because there is a suitcase on the desk and the room is neat. This is a deep depth of field and the resolution is mediocre. The shutter speed was fast but not too fast.
