Complete in class. 4 paragraphs minimum, 5 sentences minimum per paragraph.

Some things to consider:

  • This photograph is a composite—i.e., it is made up of more than one image.
  • How is Uelsmann (the photographer) using compositing to influence the overall mood and feeling of the image?
  • How do you think this image was created?

This is a very trippy kind of photo. The photo is of a living room with a desk in the middle. The top of the room is the sky and on the desk, is a map with a small human on it. The image is a dark image. It is using black and white for its main colors. The only objects are the desk and the man.

The man seems to be exploring the map. The image is not underexposed. The image is focused on the room and the map. There is small pixelation on the man's shadow. This photo is very pleasing to look at. This photo was taken from a first point of view.

The image is sort of applying rule of thirds, because the man and desk is on the left hand side. The frame crops off at where sky connects to the image. The image is semi-balanced because there is no roof, but there also is nothing on the right hand side of the room. There might be a story being told in this image, maybe like explore the unknown. This reminds me of a video game.

This is a very beautiful image. I think anyone who likes adventures would love this image. Simply because the man on the map. This is a very successful photograph because it can catch a lot of eyes. It does challenge me to question the author to ask him/her how he made this image.

This image is of a room with the sky as the roof. The room seems very formal and seems to serve the purpose of a study. The carpet includes very many details and swirls and the fire place has many intricate designs. On the desk there is a small man walking. He looks very tired and depressed as though he is going on a long journey. The sky creates depth within the photo and widens the photo.

This photo seems perfectly exposed yet still has specific objects in the light coming from above. The image is in focus. The color is correct even though there are some gray incorporated with the photo. There is no pixilation. There is also adequate resolution.

The photo is pleasing to look at because of the vast sky above the room and the depth it gives us. The rule of thirds is being used and the chimney and desk in the bottom intersections. The lines of the photo direct my eyes to the sky above the room. This photo is asymmetrical because of the lack of objects on the far left side. The frame of the photograph is completely filled.

This image reminds me of the Great Hall in Harry Potter because the ceiling in the movies and books is the sky. The photo tells the idea of there being vast horizons and good times ahead. As the man walks toward the open sky he is reminded that there are good times ahead. The photo is very noteworthy and beautiful because of the grand skies. This photo was very successful.

The photograph shows a room similar to an office, in which the ceiling is replaced by a cloudy sky. This is an example of a surreal photograph. I believe the picture was created by photoshopping multiple photos together in order to tell an abstract story. It is somewhat similar to "Option 2" in our Midterm project. I think it may even the same thing, if you would consider this a collage.

Even when the picture is black and white, the shadows and lights are well balanced. I really can't tell if the main image, the office, was set up in a studio. Inside the room there is no people, but seemingly old furniture; meaning that there isn't anything too modern. In the image itself there isn't anything in specific happening, which adds a mysterious feel to it. The viewer can imagine anything, which is nice.

The exposure I would say is maybe a little darker than it should, but it doesn't stop the lightning from being well-balanced. All images are in focus, which makes the picture really state a presence. The picture also has an adequate resolution, which looks nice. I believe the room's angle was placed perfectly, because those lines cause you to see directly either to the brighter sky, or the darkest corner, that being the bottom left. Which, ironically are two extremes.

The image in my opinion has no meaning behind it,. If there is, I'm missing it completely. Although it completely embodies my idea of surrealism. The picture is made to make a viewer fall in a dream-like state, and it achieves that. I like it. I think it was a creative idea to take this picture. I hope it may gain a meaning later in my life. For now, I can just confirm that it is pleasant to look at.

This photo portrays an image of an office with an open roof facing toward the sky. In the center of the room is a book on top of a map, and on top of that map is a miniature human being. This photo is in black and white, and a mix of dark shadows and bright highlights are used. Bright light is coming from the sun, providing bright light. The shadow from the desk and the corners of the room provide the photo with dark shadows.

This image appears to be very slightly underexposed due to the overall darkness of it. The image is in focus, and none of he objects within the photo appear blurry or pixelated. The resolution is adequate and without any pixelation. Because the image is in black and white, the colors are correct (all of the whites look white and the blacks/grays look black/gray.) This photo is asymmetrical but still appears to be balanced with its congrats of darks and lights.

This photo is pleasing to look at because of how neatly it is composed. The rule of thirds is being used because the subject (the desk) is slightly off-center. The point of view is pretty straight on, perhaps taken from a person entering the room. The desk, the focal point of the image, is framed by the carpet on the ground. The more specific focal point, the man on the desk, is framed by the desk. There is plenty of extra space throughout the photo; this negative space mostly consisting of the rest of the office area.

I believe this image symbolizes the adventure provided by knowledge. The size of the man could be representing that e are so small compared to all that is in the world. While gaining knowledge, a whole new set of doors is opened to humans. I do like this image because of the message it sends across. I believe the artist was successful in almost perfectly compositing an image with a symbolic background.

The image is of a room that shows a sky instead of a ceiling. The colors that are being used in the image are black and white. The lighting is bright sunlight shining through the clouds. There is a piano with a map and a little man on top of the map in the image. It looks like the little man is looking for something on the map.

The image looks a little underexposed. The image is in focus so you could tell what all the objects are in the room. The color is not correct because the image is in black and white. There is no pixelation in the photo. The rule of thirds is not being used because the main theme of the photo, which is the whole room, takes up the whole frame.

The photographer took the image by facing the inside of the room. The image has a deep depth of field. The subject of the room fills the frame. The theme of the image is exploration. The story being told is that the man is looking on the map to find out the next place to go. Once he finds one, he will fly into the sky and travel to the place he desires.

The artist made the image to symbolize that do anything if you put your mind to it, just like how the man wanted to to explore a different place, so he decided to start looking. The image reminds me of the movie "Peter Pan" because the man looks about the size of a fairy. It does not question beliefs or assumptions. The image is both interesting and beautiful. I like the photograph because it can be interrupted in many different ways.

This is a composite which is a mixture of different pictures complied to be one photograph . The sky is the background, whereas the office is eye-capturing. The desk in the middle is different, however, because it has a map with a little person on it. There is no roof, therefore, sunlight is beaming in the room. The colors that are being used are black and white. The photographer did this to set a gloomy setting. The fireplace and the plate above it have the "sunlight" gleaming on them.

The image is underexposed because the majority of the objects are darker than white, and it just appears to have dark shadows. The photograph is pleasing to look at because it's strange-looking. The setting is something that's not normal. You wouldn't find a little person walking on a desk or a room that doesn't have a roof. The point of view of the photographer is bug's eye. The images are really well-photographed, therefore, there isn't any pixelation.

The image is framed by the backboard of the fireplace on the right side, and the left side is framed by a bookcase. It isn't completely framed, as you look farther up, the frames cut off as the sky comes into view. As for the theme of the photograph, I believe that the photographer created this piece of artwork to portray a sense of childhood. This looks like a scene from a child's imagination. And the child on the desk is a prime example of a childish imagination.

This photograph reminds me of when I was a little kid and would think of random scenarios that were unrealistic. I would fantasize about what my future-house would look like and this image reminds me of one of my ideas. The image is interesting because it's different and something that you wouldn't see in your daily life. I like it because it's creative and spunky. The photograph is successful because the photographer was able to compose multiple different photos and merge it into one successful photograph that symbolizes childhood.

The photograph depicts a library or study, without a roof, and a small person walking on the map. The photo shows 3 normal concepts, the sky, a room, and a person, and merged them into an eery composition. The study room shown looks like something found inside of a upper class house or mansion. The eloquent design of the room mixed with the simple beauty of the sky combines to show two different elements merging. The more refined and formal image of the study with the raw beauty of nature contrast each other. The little person on top of the desk adds a more whimsical and magical sense to the photo as little people do not exist.

I believe that the photographer had to photograph 3 separate photos, one of the person, one of the sky, and one of the room itself. However, he had to photograph the picture in a way in which they would correspond with each other. For example, he probably had to have a light source while photographing the room in order to give the illusion that the shining was actually shining upon it. This is even though the sun is not really there. This also causes the shadows being cast down in a way that would be harmonious with the concept of the sun being the light source. The photographer probably composited the photo by cutting out specifics of each original photograph and layer them on top of each other.

The picture itself is black and white. The room looks a little underexposed, but perhaps that is the increased contrast. The way the light is shown in the room gives a haunting effect. Also, I can see the rule of thirds being applied by observing the position of the desk in comparison to the rest of the photograph. The lines of the photo are kind of drawn diagonally towards the desk. This draws the eyes immediately to this subject.

I believe that the photographer wanted to create something unconventional with this composition. He used a dark room without photoshop and he had a creative vision to put these seemingly random pieces together. To me, it almost creates a fantasy or heavenly kind of setting but with a certain darkness to it from the architecture of the room. Looking at the photograph gives me multiple complex emotions and I believe this is what the photographer was aiming to do. I think that he was successful in the photograph by making people feel this way.

The first thing you notice when you look at this image is the sky, which is very odd. this image shows an office space/room that looks like it would belong inside, however the roof is open and we see clouds in the sky. The image also has a desk with a book on it and on the book is a miniature man walking on a book. The colors being used in the photograph are black and white. The lighting in the image is also very dark because the only light coming in is from the sun and most likely a light in the room.

The image is perfectly exposed and has a great use of shadows. Everything in the image is focused which makes it very intriguing to look at. The color is correct and I love the fact that it is black and white. There isn't any pixelation in the image. There is also adequate resolution.

In this image, the rule of thirds is being used because the desk is in the right intersection. The photographer took this image from the side of the wall looking slightly up. The leading lines in the image are the lines in the walls, which point up to the sky showing us the audacity of the image. I don't believe that there is a main focal point that is shown in the image because it does not fill the frame. The photograph is not very balanced because there is so much going on.

I believe that the theme of this picture is the world always being bigger than you could ever imagine. The man is walking up the desk in this image and is taking a journey, in this journey he travels everywhere and gets to learn everything. However, the man doesn't know that this world he is exploring is so much smaller then he ever imagined and there is so much more to explore. Personally, I love this image because it is surreal and definitely makes me think outside the box. I believe this photograph is successful because of the the skill level it took to produce it and the beauty shown.

The photo is of an old interior styled room with clouds and a sky for a ceiling. On the desk, is a person that seems to be walking out of a book. The artist of the photo probably chose black and white to show the keep the viewer thinking of the possible theme or story for the photo so they wouldn't be distracted by color. The lighting in what seems to be the study is dark, but as the height of the wall rises to the ceiling the light is getting brighter. This is from the sunlight ceiling. An object that seems to be symbolic or unique is the desk because it's the only in the study that is illuminated. The action in this photo is about whoever is coming out of the book.

The image has both over and under exposed areas because of the different lighting in spots. The image is in full focus, nothing is blurry and the color isn't really noted because the photo is in black and white. The rule of thirds isn't being used because the object of focus is in the center.

The photo is overall pleasing to look at because it reminds the image reminds me of my childhood. I lived in a house that looked similar study room seen in the photo above and a few of the houses I lived in had a library. The point of view is eye level, but I feel like for the viewer the photo could be seen from a lower point of view because you are kind of looking into the study, almost like a child. The photo is somewhat framed because of the books on the desk and because of the shadow and carpet of the room. The corners in the back of the room are darker and may lead the viewer to look at the center of the photo, the desk. The image is balanced and no extra space is seen in this photo. The image doesn't crop off because the photo was intentionally made to fit the frame.

The theme that is being conveyed to me is curiosity, youth, and/ or individuality because of how striking the random objects in the image are. I also can see wisdom as being a theme because of how questionable the whole photo is. Maybe there isn't a story being told, the photo could've been made to make questions arise. The artist probably made the image so that people would question how random it really is. The image is overall very nice to look at. The photo is really interesting and I like how questionable and abstract it is. The photo is successful to me because unique and distinct it is.

The photograph takes place in a study, but where the ceiling was, it has been replaced by the sky. The sky is very cloudy and in the study there is a fire place, chairs, a bookcase lining the walls and a desk. On the desk is a map, and on the map a person stands, and appears to be walking across the map. He looked ragged and tired though. The image is black and white and the shadows are very dark. The image looked a little underexposed but was in focus and had the correct colors and resolution.

The composition is pleasing to look at. It functions as a composite; the sky was one photograph, the study was another, and the man on the map was a third. These photos were combined to create the final image shown. The point of view would be that of someone who walked into the office. The wood of the study creates many vertical lines that direct you to the ceiling/sky. The image is balanced and the lines of the study help balance the image. I can't think of a specific subject; perhaps the desk. Either way, the desk is centered and doesn't fill the frame. The walls of the study serve as the frame and the frame crops of at the corners of the study's walls.

The image conveys an idea of 'the sky is the limit' as there is no ceiling; only the sky. The study could serve as a symbol of hard work, labor, strict rules and formality. The sky could symbolize an escape from the repetitive and worn cycle of the 'proper life.' The map on the map could represent someone who has grown up in this 'proper life' but struggles to find meaning or something worthwhile or interesting. He looks to the sky, but it is out of reach; it is close enough that it fuels his hope and he perseveres but just out of reach, that he may never achieve it.

I like this image; I think it is very cool that the photographer took multiple exposures and then frankensteined them to create a new image. It shows how passionate he is about photography. I also like the image itself; I really like the sky. It is relaxing and I like the contrast it has with the study. I think the photograph is successful because the different elements provide contrast but do not clash. It is odd; but a good odd, the kind that invokes thought and fuels curiosity and possibility.

The photographer used compositing to create a dramatic scene that makes most people small. He does this by making a (tiny) person, stand on a book that's on a writing desk, and having a wide open space around the person (lack of roof helps create that effect). The image was made by taking 3 (?) separate images of 1) a person walking, 2) a cloudy sky and 3) a room. The images were then positioned in a specific order to create the final product.
The image shows a high-class, antique-looking room containing a chimney, a writing desk (with notebook) and no roof. There is a tiny person walking on the notebook, and there above the roof is the daytime sky, with the sun peaking out of some of the many clouds in the image. The room would have been photographed with artificial light. The sky would, of course, be taken in an outdoor environment. I'm unsure where and how the set up was for the person. The image is shown in black and white, which helps create more contrast and add drama to the scene (look at the clouds). It has bright highlights and dark shadows.
The image is perfectly exposed, as a whole, and the the great majority of the image is in focus. It is an image of adequate resolution.
The image is pleasing to look at because it has a lot of details for the viewer to see, but the scene is organized in a way that doesn't make the amount of details feel overwhelming. The lack of roof also helps make the image less overwhelming and more spacious. The image is shown is taken in "vertical/portrait mode" (tall image). The photo seems to be seen from a waist-high point of view and was taken near a corner of the room. The walls, furniture, and decorations in the room contain many lines. The lines that grabbed my attention first, though, were the ones that go along the top of the walls (the edges between the room and the sky. These lines give you a sense of dimension. There are also lines going down the walls that guide your eye towards the details and set-up of the room. The image is asymmetrical and there is a bunch of space used up as "background".
This image may show how many people feel very small in our world of formal, and intricate complexity (represented by the decorations and furnishings of the room itself. The lack of roof emphasizes the idea that we are tiny compared to our vast, dramatic skies. The lack of roof may also indicate a sort of vulnerability. The harsh elements of nature can easily access the fragile and valuable decorations, walls, furnishings, and destroy them in a split second. There is no sense of safety when one has no roof above their head during a natural disaster. The size of the person highlights our relative size and our vulnerability to nature as humans. This image certainly reminds me of movies/books like Alice in Wonderland, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. I find the image very interesting and beautiful because the composition really makes you look at the details, that are worth noting. The lack of roof and the combination of images is done in a very beautiful, surreal, and symbolic way, which makes the viewer think about it more deeply than other images. The surrealism also adds a sense of uniqueness to the image, in my opinion.
I really like the image. Everything that makes me shift my view on the world, through visual surrealism, gets my mind running and has a great appeal to me. I love composites, in general, and this is a very good example of one that makes you scan the image and one that makes you think. Due to that, the image is very successful.

This photograph is of a house. The house has no roof. The house has a piano in it. There is a fireplace in the house. There is a man on the piano.

This photograph is correctly exposed. The photograph is in black and white. The photographer used rule of thirds with the piano. This photograph has a deep depth of field. This photograph was edited.

This photograph is surreal. The colors in this photograph are dark and gloomy. This photograph shows a life story of a mans life that is nearing its end. Because of that this photograph is depressing. The man waking on the piano looks tired.

I have mixed opinions on this photograph. I like how it tells a story and that it has a meaning. I also like that the photograph is edited well. I do not like how the story is sad and has a sad meaning. I also do not like the colors in this photograph.

This photograph is of some kind of interior study room with a study desk and a tiny man standing as if he were walking on the desk. The ceiling of the room is a sky filled with many scattered clouds and the sun peeking through the clouds. On the right side of the room, there is a fire pit and a decor plate hanging above it.

This photograph is a little bit underexposed especially on the left side of the photograph. The photograph is black and white and is has very dark colors in it. The brightness of the sun in the photograph is causing a glare in the photograph and causing the study desk to be very bright and becomes clear to the viewer that the study desk and man are the focus of the photograph.

By looking at this photograph I can tell it has a surreal story behind it. I don't really know what the meaning of the photograph is yet I can tell that this photograph goes against reality and isn't something that is done. The photographer most likely was achieved with using photoshop and separated photographs were used to bread the final photograph.

I personally have mixed feelings about this photograph because I can't tell what the photograph is about. I like the way the photograph look but I dislike how the photograph doesn't tell a clear story and explanation when I look at it. I do believe the photograph is very successful because of how detailed and crisp the photograph. Overall I really like this photograph and I love the way it is edited.

The photograph is about a room with a roof that is taken off and it reveals the sky. The room is very classy looking it has the feel of a british mansion office. I feel like the photograph uses these images because it wants to have an older look to it. It wants to appear as a photo taken in the early 1900s.

The image is a mix between underexposed and overexposed in some parts of the image the area around the book shelf is very dark where some parts of the image are really bright. The image surrounding the desk looks a little pixelated when you look at it. It seems that the area around the desk wasn't worked on to well. The color of the image is correct.

The image in my opinion is pleasing to look at because it has a nice room style and it has the sky on top of it. I think the story behind this image is that the owner of a mansion was very greedy, and he had refused to help an "old man" and in return he was cursed so now all he sees when he enters rooms is the blazing fury of the sun.

I like the image because it has an endless possobility of stories that I can make up in my head about what this image means, and it has a nice look and feel. I think this image is successful.

This photo is of a house without a roof. There is a mini person on a book. There is a fireplace and a bookshelf opposite of each other. There are flowers and a door that leads outside. The sun is shining through clouds. This photo was taken by Jerry Uelsmann.

The photo was taken at day time because of the sun. The photographer edited the photo to make it dark and gloomy. I am not sure how he made the person small. There seems to be a chair in front of the door blocking it. The house is not a modern style.

The photo is difficult to interpret. I think it is showing us a surreal universe where things are opposites from the world we live in. There probably was a roof on this house. I think that the photographer took a photo of the background and masked it to look like there is no roof. There is a lot of negative space in the house because of the shadows.

I think the photographer was successful in making this photo. The photo is very unique and interesting to look at. The sun could possibly resemble hope in this dark photo. I am curious as to why the person is small and on a book. Overall, I find this photograph pleasing to look at.
