Today you will be writing about this photograph made by Lewis Hine, a photographer and sociologist who used photography as a tool for social reform. His images of child laborers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries helped abolish child labor. We will read together in class an article on Lewis Hine and the National Child Labor Committee. Then, you will write a 4 paragraph critical analysis of the photograph above. Your analysis must be 4 paragraphs, 5 sentences minimum per paragraph. Remember to post your analysis as a comment to the blog post that corresponds to your class. If you post your analysis to the wrong class's post, it will not be graded. If you do not complete your analysis in class, you must finish it for homework before your next class on FRIDAY, 11/10/17. Refer to your "How to See" handout for analyzing a photograph--
This image is of a girl named Merilda and she is carrying raspberries for child labor in the 1900's. The photo was taken by a Lewis Hine and he is a photographer for a "stop child labor" society. The photo was taken in a small town in Massachusetts. The photo itself reveals a bad time for the children of the United States. Thank the Lord this is all going to stop soon.

This image is of a little girl named Merilda working in the fields and collecting cranberries. The image is in black and white because this photograph was taken in 1911 when there weren’t many color cameras available. The lighting is sunlight at about midday. The objects in the image are Merilda, the buckets of cranberries, and the women working behind her. The women and children in the picture are all working in the cranberry fields.

This is a photo by Lewis Hine. The photo is of a young girl, Merilda, standing in an open field. She is wearing a hat and a dress, and she has long sleeves and tights underneath the dress. She is doing child labor because she is working on a cranberry farm. In the background, we can see many other children performing similar tasks. The image is in black and white, and this is because it was made in 1911 when child labor was very common.

This is an image of a young child laborer that worked in the fields carrying berries in baskets. It is in black and white because Lewis’s pictures were taken in the 1900s. The lighting is mostly shadows because it was an old Graflex Camera with negatives and it made it look dark. In this image there is a basket full of berries being carried by a little girl with other children or young adults and some barns or houses behind her. In this image Merilda, a child laborer, is in the fields collecting berries in baskets to bring back to the employers.

The image consists of a young pioneer girl holding 2 buckets of cranberries, standing in a field. There aren’t any colors because the photo was taken in black and white, and before color was in cameras. The lighting is bright sunlight because they are outside. The objects in this image are a house, a group of people picking cranberries, and some trees. Children are doing labor by collecting cranberries.

This image was shot by Lewis Hine, a photographer that was popular for taking pictures in the early 1900’s. This picture in particular is of a little girl that looks to be about 6 to 7 years old. This little girl is carrying two big heavy metal buckets filled with cranberries. This image was shot in 1910 and at that time, little girls were forced to do work in hard labor. This photograph is in black and white and was taken outside with clear sunlight. Apart from the little girl in this picture, there are other kids and adults working in the background.

In this photo by Lewis Hine we see a girl named Merilda. She is a young girl, and in her hands she is carrying two buckets of cranberries. The colors used in the photo are black and white, because in 1911 they didn’t have color pictures readily available. The girl is standing in a field, and the background is very dark, at least compared to her white outfit. She is looking at the camera. There are many people in the background who also appear to be working.

This is an image of a young girl named Merilda who is carrying two baskets that are filled with cranberries. In this image you can also see other people working in the fields. You can also see a house and some trees in the background. This image is in black and white since it was taken in 1911. Even though this picture is in black and white, this picture looks like it was taken during the day.

This image is of a young girl in a field. The girl seems to be carrying what is a plant or herb that she is picking from the field. In the background, there are other women that are standing around or picking the plant out of the ground. This image is in shallow depth of field because it is focused on the girl and not on the background. Behind all of the workers, there is a large home or storage house. Behind the home/storage house is a hill covered in trees. This image is using the rule of thirds because the girl is in the middle of the image. There are many buckets scattered throughout the field. Some buckets are upside down and some have the plants in them.

This picture photographed Lewis Hine, is a very unique photograph. It seems to be one that was taken a long time due to the outline that it has. In the photograph there is a young little girl carrying two buckets and you could presume that they are filled with water. The little girl also seems to be in a field and she is not alone, there is also many people in the background.

This image is of a young girl working the fields holding two buckets. Their are more people in the background working in the fields with the girl and they are all dressed the same. This image is in black and white, but being outside keeps the image bright. By the image being in black and white it gives it an older feel and better sense of time. Black and white are also not happy colors, so it adds to the narrative. Comments are closed.
