In this photo there is a couch. The couch is grey. There is also a girl in this photo. She is leaning on the couch. There is a velvet blanket in between the girl and the couch.

The girl is white and has dirty blonde hair. She is wearing blue skinny jeans. She is also wearing a purple and white stripped long sleeve shirt. Over that shirt she has on a indigo short sleeve shirt. She has no socks or shoes on.

The lights are off in the house. The girl is holding a birthday cake on her lap. The only light thats visible is the candles on the cake. The girl looks sad. She is looking toward the camera.

The carpet on the floor is grey and fuzzy. You can assume that its the girls birthday. The girl looks really sad. If it is her birthday it seems like nobody showed up to her party and thats why she's sad.

One of the reasons I don't like this photo is that its really depressing. I like happy photos that give off positives vibes. Another reason is the color choice. The colors that are used are grays, blacks, and dark reds. These colors compliment the sadness of this photo.

This image is of a girl sitting on the floor. The girl is sitting behind a long coach and leaning against it. The girl has a birthday cake on her lap with the candles lit. The girl seems to be sad. This image has dark colors being used. The lights are turned off. The girl is by herself in the living room.

This image is a a perfect exposure. The image is being focused on the girls face. The first thing your eyes are drawn to is the cake because on the bright color. The colors being used are correct. There is no pixelation being used in this image.

This image is pleasing to look because you get so many thoughts in your head.the rules of third is being used in this image. The view of point is first person. The negative space is in the back of the room. The positive space is the girl of the floor with the cake on her hands.

I think the theme being used is that the girl had a birthday party or dinner and nobody showed up. The girl is really upset and feels that no-one likes her. I think the artist wanting the viewers to think about how lonely and sad this girl must have felt when no-one showed up to her party. This does not remind me of anything because overtime I have had a party all my friends that i invite my friends come.

This image in not beautiful to look. Although this image is interesting to look at because I wonder where are her parents. I wonder if maybe her parents forgot that is was her birthday as well. It is sad to see that this girl had no-one to celebrate with her birthday. I do like this image because of the thoughts i had thought of. A good picture to me is having being able to tell a story out of it and having many thoughts in your head about the image as well. This image is successful.

This image is of a little girl leaning against a couch. She has a birthday cake in her hands. The lighting in this image is coming from the candles on the birthday cake. There is a painting in the background. There is also a shadowy figure in the back left corner.

The image is underexposed. There is no blurriness at all. The entire picture is in focus. I also think the colors have been corrected because they look vibrant. There is adequate resolution.

The composition in the image is very pleasing. The empty carpet space in the front balances out the image. I think the photographer took this photo at eye level with the subject. The focal point of this photograph is the girl sitting on the floor. She is kind of framed by the wall and the side of the couch.

There are a lot of vertical lines in this image. This causes the room to look taller and more spacious. The image is not balanced. There is more space being filled on the right side and the left side is kind of plain. The subject does not fill the frame.

I think the theme of the photograph is loneliness. I think it was the girls birthday and her family forgot so she is celebrating alone at night. I think the artist maybe encountered this situation so he/she decided to recreate it. This image doesn't remind me of a childhood memory because my family has always remembered my birthday. I think the picture is beautiful because of its ominous colors and sad theme.

This photograph shows a girl sitting behind a couch. She is wearing a blue shirt with a purple striped shirt under. She is also wearing blue pants and not wearing any shoes. She has a cake in her hands and all the candles are lit. Her hair is down and she's sitting facing the camera.

She is in a very dark room with a grey couch and the rest to what appears to look like a living room. The lighting is coming from the candles from the cake. The rest of the room is very dark due to lack of light. The lighting caused half of the top of the photograph to be underexposed. The photograph is focused on the girl with the cake.

This photograph is pleasing to look at because of its simplicity/ The rule of thirds is not being used however lines are being used. The lines of the living room direct the eyes to the girl sitting. This photograph was taken from first person. The subject which is the girl doesn't fit the space. The extra space of this photograph would be the living room and the couch. The colors of this photograph are very dull however the girl and the cake aren't.

When first looking at this photograph, I see a sad girl celebrating her birthday by herself. Just by the look of her face she seems alone and lost. The candles are on which probably means she was about to blow them out and this photo was taken. I think this challenges social beliefs to show that not everyone has someone to sing them happy birthday. I really like the photograph and I find it very interesting.

I enjoy this photograph very much. I really like how simple yet meaningful it is. A lot of times we look forward to our birthdays because we have people to celebrate them with. We forget that there are people that don't have people to celebrate their special day. A lot of times they have to celebrate by themselves. I believe that this photograph shows and brings out those who don't have someone to celebrate their birthday .

This picture depicts a young girl, maybe around 11-years-old, sitting alone against a couch with a birthday cake in her lap. She is looking into the camera with a stolen face, and there's no sign of anyone else around her. The image is very dark and utilizes dark shadows. The only light is the light coming from the candles on the cake. this light is the only thing that allows you to see the girl's face and her surrondings.

The image is definitely underexposed seeing as the majority of it is dark. The image is in focus, and the resolution is adequate. Every part of the image that is illuminated is in clear, high quality. No pixelation is evident. This picture is pleasing to look at because of the simplistic composition. The home looks very familiar, and the girl looks likesomegody you would see on the street.

The rule of thirds is being used in this image. The subject of the photo, the young girl, is slightly off center. The point of view is from someone in the room looking at the girl. This image is not symmetrical, as neither of its halves are equal. The lines of the blanket direct your eyes to where the girl is sitting. The remainder of the couch and the room is cut off by the frame of the image. This takes away any clues that may reveal more about the situation.

Although it's asymmetrical, this image is balanced, and nothing looks off. There is plenty of negative space in this image. The girl and the cake are the prominent positive spaces, and the rest of the dark room is the negative space. Because of this amount of negative space, the subject does not fill the frame. I believe the negative space in this image is representative of the girl's loneliness that she is feeling on her own.

This image does not remind me of anything, as I was lucky enough to have good birthdays all of my life. This image speaks for any child that may feel neglected or unloved, and I think that's why it makes people think. The look on the girl's face is clearly sad, and it shows that every child wants to be loved by their family. I think this photo challenges society by forcing them to look at what some children may face. Even if some may think tat the world is perfect, this photo shows what some have to deal with.

This image is of a small girl leaning against a red pillow on a black couch. It is using dark colors throughout the image to emphasize the red pillow and the orange cake. It is dark lighting except for where the candles are shining which illuminates the image a little bit. The objects are the cake, the pillow and the couch. The girl appears to be celebrating her birthday party by herself.

The image is not underexposed. The image is in focus on the girl and where the candles illuminate. The colors appear correct. There is hardly any pixelation in the image. This photo is very pleasing to look at due to the composition.

The rule of thirds is being used in the photo, the girl is on the left side of the image. It is taken from a first person point of view. It is framed by all of the black colors in the image. The lines in the image direct your eyes to the cake, then to the red cushion. The image is not balanced.

The story being told in this image is maybe about the girl having no-one to celebrate her birthday with? It kind of reminds me of a dream. It makes me question of why she sits in the dark room instead of somewhere light? The image is beautiful overall. I like this image because it reminds me of a dream.

This is an image of a lonely girl. She is in a very dark room with the only thing illuminating it is the birthday cake with lit candles. The dark colors are being used to accentuate her solemn face and attitude. The red blanket that the girl is leaning against is a necessary accent to the poorly lit room. The sad girl has a very intense frown on her face, emphasizing on how lonely her birthday was spent.

The composition is not very pleasing to look at because it is really sad to see a birthday spent alone. However, the dark and gloomy colors are properly used in this photograph. The rule of thirds is being used by the girl being on the far left of the image. The focal point of the photograph is the birthday cake because of the bright light illuminating from it. The positive space is of the girl and the birthday cake, and the negative space is everything else.

The image is highly underexposed due to the majority of the background being pitch black. The image is again, dark and gloomy. The only two objects that adds color to the photograph is the birthday cake with the candles and the red blanket. The whites look white with the fire from the birthday cake looking white. There is highly adequate resolution produced from the photographer in this image.

The themes of this image is sadness and loneliness. These are very prominent because of the sadness and depression on the little girl's face. I believe that the reasoning behind the making of this image is to remind people that not everyone is as fortunate as most people are. This is in the sense that not everyone is a part of a family that cares about them. This reminds me of a nightmare that I once had of being alone with nobody there to help me.

I'm not really a huge fan of this particular photograph because of how sad it is. The image has no happiness in it and makes me frown. However, I would say that this is a successful photograph because of how well it was composed. There is no pixelation able to be seen in the composition. The photograph is successful but too depressing in my opinion.

The photo by Cig Harvey is of a young girl sitting on the floor with a birthday cake in her lap. The girl looks sad and seems tired. The girl is sitting in a dark room behind a couch and the only real source of light comes from the candles on the cake. Other than that, the room is very dark has many shadows.

The image is underexposed in the shadowy areas but is perfectly exposed on the girl. The image is focused on the center of the photo and focused on the girl. The resolution is a little low and no pixelation is present. The color is also very vibrant around the girls area.

I don't find the photo pleasing to look at because it isn't an interesting photo to me. I find the image to be a little boring because the only thing that has some interest in the cake and candles that illuminate the girl. Rule of thirds is seen in the photo because the subject of focus, the girl, is on the left side of the photo. The photo is framed by the shadows present in the photo. No lines direct your eyes to the subject of focus and the photo is symmetrical. The frame is filled, of mostly shadows, and a lot of extra space is present. There is a lot of negative space in the photo because of the darkness and shadows.

The theme I'm getting from this image is loneliness because the girl is all alone and looks sad. I don't see a story being told, just a lonely girl in the dark. The photo doesn't remind me of anything except being alone on your birthday, which I can't relate to. The photo isn't questionable or challenging. I don't find the image interesting because I feel like there isn't any character to it. Overall, I don't like the image and don't find it noteworthy because I don't find it memorable. I do think that the photo could be successful, just not to me.

This image shows a girl in jeans and a striped long sleeve shirt who is sitting on the ground leaning against a grey couch. She is holding on her lap what looks to be a birthday cake with multiple candles lit. The girl is the only person in the room and the only other vibrant colors other than the candles and clothes is a blanket that is hanging from the couch. The lighting in the image is very dark, and the main light source are the candles on the cake. The vibrant colors also seem to be surrounded around the girl.

This image is perfectly exposed and the use of the light is very impressive. The image is in focus and the main focus is the girl. There is also correct color in the image. Along with this, there is also no pixelation and adequate resolution. The rule of thirds is also being used in the image because the girl is in the top left intersection of the graph.

The point of view in this image is 1st person because the girl is looking directly at the camera. The focal point of the image is, obviously the girl, because she is the only living being in the photograph and all the color is surrounding her and seems to be pointing towards her. There are several leading lines in the image, one of them is the edge of the blanket which leads down the the ground and to the edge of the couch which directs your eye to the opposite side of the image from where the girl is sitting. I believe this is down to show the girl is lonely and feels neglected. In this image, the subject does not fill the image and the negative space would be the carpet space and the background of the image.

I believe the main theme in this image is loneliness or feeling neglected. I believe that the girl is feeling neglected on her birthday and seems to be celebrating alone. The artist made this image to show the depression of being alone and that when you're alone you must create your own happiness or color in your life. This image reminds of the scene in the first Harry Potter book where Harry s celebrating his birthday alone, because the family he is staying with dent care about him. He ends up sitting alone and tracing out the image of a cake in the sand he is laying on.

I believe this image challenges the beliefs of cherished children today because we live in a world where we are watched and taken care of. The idea that some children do not have that is astounding to us. This however, does not surprise parents or adults, but makes them feel sad that others don't care for children the way they often do. I like this image because of the use of color surrounding the girl and the story I believe is behind it. I believe that his photograph is successful because it appeals to adults and children, and shows us the depth of the world around us.

This photograph is of a young girl celebrating her birthday. She is shown sitting on the ground, leaning against a gray couch. Everything around her is black or faded out, as if she is separated from the world around her. She is wearing jeans, a striped long sleeved shirt with and blue shirt over it. The light from the candles in the darkness of the room seems to be the focus within the photo.

The image is perfectly exposed. Even with the dark background and the singled out light, the image still seems to have depth. The image is in focus with the girl and the cake on her lap as the focal point. The colors we are able to see are correct, but because the photo is so dark, some of the black items in the background are mostly gray but would have color if the lights were on in the room. There is no pixilation and there is adequate resolution.

This photo is pleasing to look at because it allows our eyes to focus on one thing alone. This photo does not overwhelm us at all. The rule of thirds is not being used because the subject is in the middle of the photograph and all things are centered around her. The depth of field being used is shallow because there is nothing in focus behind the girl. This photo is asymmetrical which relates to the loneliness the girl is feeling.

The theme behind this image is loneliness. There is a sense of loneliness in this photo because of the darkness surrounding her. I believe that in this photo everyone forgot about her birthday and she has resorted to sitting alone with her cake, celebrating alone. The look on the girls face shows sadness and loneliness which leads to a sense of mystery. The artists intention with this photo was to lead us to wonder what the story behind this girl is.

This image reminds me of the movie Sixteen Candles when the family of Sam forgets her birthday. The sense of mystery behind the photo leads me to question the story behind this girls day and life, whether she is alone all the time or forgotten about. This image is interesting because of the mystery behind it. It is also beautiful because of the black surrounding her on every side, showing loneliness. This photo is successful because of the technique behind it and the mystery it brings.

The image is of a girl holding a lit birthday cake. The colors being used in the image are dark and cool such as the grey furniture and carpet, and her blue pants and purple shirt. Since the candles are the only bright color, your eyes are drawn to the cake. The lighting includes dark shadows because the lights aren't on in the house. The objects in the image are the girl, the cake, and the furniture and other details included in the room.

In the image, a girl is sitting the floor while holding a birthday cake. From the girl's sad facial expression, it looks like she maybe didn't have any other people to celebrate with. The image looks a little underexposed because you can't see the details of the room behind the couch because it's too dark. The image is in focus because the girl is a clear subject. All the colors in the image look correct. There is no pixelation in the image because nothing looks blurry or pixelated. Therefore, there is adequate resolution.

The image is not pleasing to look at because the girl look like she was deserted and she's celebrating her birthday all by herself. The rule of thirds is being used because the girl isn't really in the center of the image. The focal point of the image is the cake, and it is framed by the lit candles and the girl. The subject does not fill the frame because you can see the furniture and the rest of the room around the girl. There is negative space between the camera and the girl because there is just plain carpet.

The theme of the image is independence. The girl is clearly celebrating her birthday by herself because the candles are lit and she is the only one who is surrounding it. The fact that she decided to still celebrate her birthday alone shows independence and that she doesn't need anyone to do things with or for her. The artist made this image to show that sometimes people aren't fortunate enough to have friends or family to celebrate with. This image reminds me of the movie 16 candles because in the movie, her family forgets her birthday like this girl's family might have done.

The image is interesting because it can be interpreted in may different ways. It is also beautiful because of the light from the candles shining on the girls face and showing what she is feeling. Even though the image is beautiful, I don't really like it because it makes me sad thinking that she doesn't have any family. Or, she has a family but they don't really care about her. The photograph is successful because I believe that the message the photographer was trying to express was properly conveyed.

The photograph depicts a particularly dark setting. There is a girl around 10-13 years old sitting behind a big couch. She is holding a birthday cake, with the light of the candles being the only evident light source in the photograph. She is looking towards the camera, with a look of apprehension on her face. She is also pouting as if something went wrong.
With the single light source from the candles, you would expect the exposure to be off. However, the exposure seems to be done right and sufficiently. The place lit up by the candles are highlighted well. The resolution is also adequate without pixelation. There is a deep depth of field as well.

Due to the composition of this photo, it becomes very pleasing to look at. The photographer managed to use a unique light source with good exposure. This give the viewer a different perspective and makes the photograph unique. The rule of thirds is also being used here. It is interesting since there is a lot of negative space, but the positive space lit up by the candles still make the photograph successful.
I believe that from the context given in the photograph, there is a story being told here. From the girl's expression to the emphasis due to the light of the birthday candles, it is possible that somebody forget the girl's birthday. Or, for some reason, the girl is alone for her birthday. The photographer give just enough context for us to know what's going on and to analyze what the scenario might be without telling us straightforwardly. It has almost an eerie and mysterious aura as well from the darkness.

From analyzing this photograph, I can truly say that it is successful. The different lighting and techniques that the photographer uses is impressive. It tells a different story with its composition. The photographer manages to maintain a good balance of knowledge and mystery. This allow the story portrayed to be interpreted in multiple ways. For this reason, I personally like this photograph and respect the photographer for how he manages to incorporate many successes in this picture.

The image is about a girl sitting by herself behind a grey couch with what looks like a cookie cake. The image uses dark and gloomy colors such as grey, dark green, light brown, and dark red. The image contains a girl, a birthday cake, a red blanket/large pillow, and one girl. I think that what's happening in the image is that the girl is spending her birthday by herself.

I think that the image is a good mix between being underexposed and overexposed. In some parts of the image it is really dark and in some other parts the image is really bright. The parts that I find underexposed are some pats of the room such as the couch and the walls. The part that I find overexposed is the birthday cake I feel like the photographer should have toned the candles brightness down a bit.

I think that the image is pleasing to look at, but the image doesn't really have a pleasant look to it as in the theme of the image is sad. The image is being shown in the third person view because we can see the girl. The image is used in the rule of thirds because the girl is in the center and the image is in the far left. The subject of the image doesn't fill the entire image.

I think that the image's theme is to show a dark and sad side to birthday's. I think that the photographer made this image to reflect on a time when they were alone on their birthday. I think that the story behind this image was that the girl invited people to her birthday, but unfortunately nobody showed up. I think that the image is beautiful and interesting.

I like this image because it has a deep meaning and it is done beautifully. The image reminds me of a childhood fear of being alone on my birthday. I think that the image is successful because it has a deep meaning and the image is enjoyable to look at. The image in a way does question me socially because it makes me feel lucky that i'm not alone.

The photograph itself contains four main objects; a couch, a girl, what seems like a lit birthday cake, and finally the dark room where everything takes place. The couch it's in the middle of the shot, almost to the right of it. The girl is sitting on the ground, with her back reclining against said couch while she looks at us. She is also holding a lit birthday cake, which seems to be one of the only light sources for the shot. Note: that most mean the photographer used a larger aperture to let light in.

Other than a large aperture, the photographer must have used a shallow depth of field. I believe this to be the case, because it also allows for light to travel in greater amounts to the lens. Not to mention that there is no need to focus on anything else other than the parts we can see with the little light provided to us to do so. As for the set up, I'm going to guess that it was set up in a professional Studio. I believe this is the case because it is hard to achieve that much darkened in a normal room.

Other than the fact that the photograph is almost creepy, I can't find a specific theme to it. The girl looks as though she's either sad or bored. I really can't tell, which annoys me to some extent. It's as though she's dissappointed of the fact that no one is celebrating her birthday. Instead of having a party, she sits with a lamentable attitude being sad at her situation.

Talking about content, I believe that this picture could be a good representation of mystery. I think this is pretty similar to our final assignement, "Mysterious Photography". I find this to be essentially true, because it leaves me thinking, "What happens next?" Making someone question what happens next, I believe is the root of mystery, and this person does well in the photograph. We all have different perspectives to what happens next.

I like the picture, something mysterious always leaves me curious. The room where the shot was taken seems pretty mysterious. It's just completely dark, which oddly enough, soothes me. Overall, I would consider this a successful photograph. Although I do wish a could find a different meaning to it.

The photograph above is taken in a living room. It is probably early evening but the only light in the room is coming from the cake the girl is holding. The girl is sitting in the floor behind the couch holding a cake. She appears to be by herself. The only color in the room is in her outfit and the blanket touching her; I don't know if this is symbolic or just coincidental.

I think the image is underexposed. The image is underexposed because they didn't used the right ISO along with there being inadequate lighting. Instead of using light just from the cake they should have also used some natural light. The resolution and pixelation are adequate. Along with the color, it is correct.

I do not think the composition is pleasing to look at primarily because it is much too dark and underexposed. The rule of thirds is in use as the first third is preoccupied by the subject of the image; the girl and her cake. The point of view is taken from directly across the girl. I think the back of the couch provides some framing for the image. The image is asymmetrical in the sense that two thirds of the room are dark and only one third has significant lighting. The subject takes up very little space in the entire image, perhaps only one sixth. I feel any space not lit up by the candles is negative space.

The total image is that of a girl sitting behind her couch in the dark with a cake with lit candles in her lap. I think this image is symbolism for her loneliness or perhaps the loneliness that the photographer experienced at some point in her life. Her loneliness is amplified by the dark room around her and by the light emitted by the candles. The cake is to probably represent a forgotten birthday or celebration but could just be symbolism for a general forgotten event. You can tell by the expression on the girl's face that whatever was forgotten by her family and friends was very important to her and she is truly hurt.

I like this image and I think it is kinda funny. Everybody fears having their birthday forgotten and that never happens. But, you could imagine what it would be like; it would be utterly devastating. This photograph captures that devastation. I like it and think it's funny but in a sense I feel it is kinda cliche; like kid all alone with a birthday cake. However, how else are you supposed to indicate a forgotten birthday or celebration?

The image shows a young girl with painted toenails sitting in the ground of a dark living, leaning against a couch, holding a birthday cake with lit-up candles. She has a sad/serious expression in her face. The image shows a deep contrast in colors by having a girl wearing blue jeans and a purple shirt, leaning back against a velvet cover in a very dark/gray room. The contrast between light/color and darkness in also exhibited by the lit-up candles in the cake. There seems to be some sort of artificial soft light lightly focused on the girl coming in from the left side of the image. The only other light source in this image would be the candles shown in the cake.

The image, overall, seems to be a bit underexposed, but the main subject, the girl, doesn't look too dark. The use of darkness in this image is very successful. The subject is perfectly in focus and the depth of field doesn't seem either too shallow nor too deep. The photograph is of adequate resolution and doesn't have any pixelation.

The image is very pleasing to look at because it arranges the things that are being hit by life in a way that fills up the central part of the image. The rule of thirds is being used by placing the girl on the first vertical line of third. Also, when looking at the grid in a horizontal manner, it is clear that it is the inner third that is being hit by light while the two outer thirds are shaded in darkness. The photographer took this image at the same "line of vision" as the sitting girl (photographer is in-level with the head of the girl). The main focus of the image is the girl, along with her cake. In some ways, she is framed horizontally by the darkness. Her shirt has a bunch of diagonal lines, showing activity in her shirt (a sharp contrast to the stillness of the room. The lines along the upper and bottom edges of the couch guide the eye toward the girl. The image is asymmetrical, and there is a lot of extra space not taken up by the girl (the couch, and the dark living room).

The idea expresses the idea of loneliness in her own life. Normally we think of birthdays as times to celebrate with others in big parties and with joy; this image shows the girl spending her birthday in the exact opposite way. I don't believe that she purposely rejected the typical birthday-party environment, but rather got to a point of loneliness in her life that left her in this depressing situation. This is the story of a girl who's only got herself, even in the milestones of her own life. Maybe she tried to cheer herself up by getting a cake to celebrate this occasion, but it's clear that the candles don't do enough to light the room, or the girl up. The artist may have intended to show that loneliness is a problem suffered by many, including teens that wear bright colors and paint their nails.

I find this image to be very interesting and successful. I really like it. The way the artist incorporates the contrast between strong colors and dull backgrounds; between the dark and the light makes for a visually beautiful image that is very pleasing to look at. The themes conveyed in this image also leads to the viewer asking many questions regarding why the girl is holding a cake on her own that makes the image that more interesting and successful. Overall, Cig Harvey has become one of my favorite artists that we have seen this year.
