For this week's critical analysis, you will navigate to the Elements of Design tutorial on the class website, which can be found HERE, or by hovering over Technical/Tutorials at the top of this page. On the tutorial page, you will note several different examples of artwork(photographs, paintings, sculptures, etc.) for each element of design. Your task is to choose 1 example within each element and write 1 paragraph explaining how the given element is incorporated into the artwork you chose to write about. You will do this for each element of art, making 8 paragraphs total. Your paragraphs must be 4 sentences minimum each. When you are writing, be sure to list the name of the artist whose work you are referencing. Post your writing as a comment to this blog post. Make sure you comment on the correct class period's blog post. Here is an example: SPACE This is a photograph by an artist named Stephen Shore. This image uses the design element of space because space is implied within the billboard itself, but also the area around the billboard. The billboard shows a depiction of a mountain range landscape, suggesting a clear foreground, middleground, and background, even though it is enclosed by a rectangular frame. There is also infinite space surrounding the billboard, as the clouds, landscape, and mountain range reach off into the distance. Your analyses will be graded on the following criteria:
If you do not finish in class, you must complete this for homework before class on Thursday, 3/22/18. Do not overthink this—just write about what you see. Good luck!

This image is by Sol Lewitt and demonstrates lines because the entire image is of different colored lines that are in different shapes. This image really puts emphasis on lines because in each different box there are lines that re moving in different directions and are different patterns. Each separate square contains different lines that are moving in different directions.

This painting was made by Sol Lewitt. He used the design element of line. Sol Lewitt used a lot of curved and colorful lines in this particular painting. These lines help show a sense of fluid movement. It also personally shows a sense of anxiety and rapidness.
This photo is by a Japanese photographer by Hiroshi Sugimoto. This image has the element of line because it depicts a narrow change in the photo. He used color in this as well to clearly show the line that separates the ocean’s and the fog’s color. The line here is around the middle where the gray and blue mix to crate the line.

This is many photographs lined up next to each other by Bernd and Hilla Becher. This image uses vertical lines building the image upward. The vertical lines are very rigid and when looking at it the lines define each tower in a distinct, sharp way. The way this image uses vertical lines makes the images feel strong and powerful holding the structure in each photo reaching up.

Line : In the image I chose there is a horizon line from the water to the sky and it looks very calming. In the water you can see ripples, or wavy lines, which show something is moving yet it is soothing to look at. In the background where the ocean fades into the sky it is blurry which makes it seem like there is more curve lines which is subtle in this image. All of the lines used in this image are very calming.

This image is a design by Sol Lewitt that incorporates the line element of design. This image apart from the lines also has color, but what stands out the most is the craziness of these lines. There are so many different directions to look at and because these lines are curved or diagonal, they make one feel frantic or spazzed. These lines display sudden movement and categorize this image a a defined and bold piece.

This image by Sol Lewitt uses lines throughout its whole image. The lines in this image are of all types, horizontal, vertical and curved. Different lines can give you different feels for the artwork but this piece can give you multiple feelings because of its use of multiple lines. The horizontal lines will give you a calm feeling and the vertical lines will give you a more serious feeling.

This image is by Bernd and Hilla Becher. The element of lines is displayed in many different ways. For example, the image is many photographs put together, and they are all lined up in rows. Another way lines are used is in the designs of the houses. There are lines on the walls, windows, and roofs.

A line is an element of art which is defined by a moving point in space. This photograph by Stephen Shoe represents line because the first thing that you see when you see this photograph is the billboard. This billboard is a long and large rectangle, a rectangle has four long sides. All of the sides are going in a straight line to define this moving point in space. At the bottom of this picture, there is a fence with 15 rectangles in it. Just like the billboard all of the lines are straight however, there is a slight curve in the edges. Comments are closed.
