For your first critical analysis of 2017, you are going to read this New York Times article about artist Nicholas Nixon and his project titled The Brown Sisters. For 40 years, Nixon photographed his wife and her 3 sisters, always in the same order.
WIthin the article, you can viwq all 40 years worth of images of the Brown sisters. Read the text, study the images, and write a 4 paragraph (5 sentences minimum) response to the series of photographs and text. This response should be your opinion—describe what you think about the entire series of images. Also, bear in mind that even though you are responding to a photographic series (more than just 1 single image), you may still treat this in the same way that you would analyze a single photograph:

The series of photos work well together. They are very consistent. The women are always in the same spots and all the photos are black and white. The idea of the photos are very cool. The photos show how people change over time.

I see multiple photos of the same ladies of when they were young and until they grown up. These ladies are sisters and they take a photo with each other every where. You can see on how they have grown up with the years they started. The photographer who took these images was one of the brown sisters husband. These photos are taken in black and white. 1/13/2017 09:58:13 am
This photo contains multiple different photos of a family of sisters. The different images are all in greyscale, so the colors are mostly black and grey. The lighting is still very bright around the characters. The only different kind of objects are the positions in which the sisters are standing and the background. There seems to be no conflict in the photos, but they take the same kind of photo every year. 1/13/2017 09:59:04 am
In this series of photographs, four sisters are shot in the same position once a year for 40 years. These photographs by Nicholas Nixon use the same type of composition every year. In almost all of the photographs, the sisters are outside in natural sunlight. All of the images are in black and white, and each sister holds a position extremely similar to the very first image. Other than the positioning of the sisters, nothing stays the same in each image. Every year, each sister looks slightly different, and looking at the series as a whole, it is very easy to see how they aged.

The photos I am analyzing today are a series of photos depicting a group of women standing side by side over the years. The lighting stays the same throughout each image because there is always natural sunlight. Their position always stays the same as well. I believe that the theme of these images is aging. I think the images are successful because even though they are still images, they carry a lot of power and depth.

This is a series of portraits of four sisters. Conveniently, one of the four sisters is Nixon’s wife. The portraits were made over a time span of forty years. In the majority of the photos, the sister are outside, therefore has natural lighting. In a few photos, the background was a white wall which would mean that studio lighting is being used. 1/13/2017 10:02:34 am
In the series of images taken by Nicholas Nixon we can see pictures of his wife and her sisters over the span of about forty years. all of the images are in black and white and the position of the women does not change. The content of the photograph represents the aging process over the span of forty years. I think the series is successful because the project took a very long time to do.

These photographs were taken every year since 1975. All of the photos are of the photographers wife and sisters. The ladies are all dressed properly according to the period of time. All of the photographers sisters have dark hair while his wife is the only one with light blond hair. The photographers wife is always the second one from the right. 1/13/2017 10:06:51 am
I believe the preface of this work of art is change. As the women grow and change from year to year the audience is able to consider the growth of relationship and the growth of body between the sisters. We understand the changes by positioning. The women are sometimes seen holding each other or blocked off from each other with crossed arms. This represents the relationship they have had over the course of the year which may have been a bit rocky or smooth sailing.

The collection of photos by Nicholas Nixon, is of his wife and her three sisters. The photos consist of simple backgrounds like the outdoors or a blank wall. The sisters are always arranged in the same order and seem to always be starring at the camera, other than each other. The photos are in black and white possibly because Nixon wanted the viewer to only focus on the sisters. The lighting throughout these photos are different each time, but most times the lighting looks to be at golden hour. Sunlight and shadows are consistent throughout the photos. The only things in each photo are the Brown sisters. Each photo is a simple portrait of them together. 1/13/2017 10:11:29 am
In this series of photos, I see four women who are very close together in each picture. However, just because they close together in each image doesn't mean the composition is also the same. In the earlier image, the four sisters' full bodies are shown. Then as they get older, only the women's busts show. Also, the positions of each women change from year to year, even though they are in the same order. This most likely shows how their relationship has changed from one year to the next.

The series of pictures is of 4 sisters over a time of 20 years. The photographer, Nixon, took pictures of his wife and her sisters for 40 years, but only 20 photos are shown. In every photo, the sisters are in the same order. The photos are also different by the way that they have different outfits in ever picture. You can see that the photos are taken in different places. All the photos are shot in black and white, but not all of them have the same lighting.

The images portray four sisters posing together for a camera. They are almost always staring directly at the camera and the photos remain black and white. By shooting the images in black and white, a sort of uniformity is seen throughout the series that doesn't distract us away from what the photographer is trying to show us. Most of the images seem to be shot with natural light, sometimes the light hits the subject directly, but sometimes they are shot in the shadow (or a combination of both). In all the photos, the sisters are the only subject in the image, and the background seems to remain small and minimal in order to bring the attention to the women. Their clothes seem to remain casual throughout the images; for their time being, at least. Their expressions seems to also remain neutral for the majority of the photos; they don't look happy, but they don't looks sad. Like the article said, the sisters don't want to let the viewer into their personal life and would much rather pose for the viewer to just 'see' them.

One of photographer Nixon's greatest projects, is a series of photographs of his wife and her sisters titled "The Brown Sisters". Each one of the pictures has different exposure qualities due to the fact that an individual photograph was taken in a different setting. While some pictures show the girls standing under the killer sun, others show the girls sitting underneath the tree's shielding shade. Even if the background and blocking of the girls changes over time, each picture has good resolutions, and fitting exposures. I believe this project is beautifully successful, because I believe that all the pictures achieve to demonstrate their main theme; one's unconditional love towards others (A wife and her sisters, in this case).

The content of "The Brown Sisters' is exactly what most would picture, a photo, or series of photos of individual of familial portraits of the Brown Sisters. However, what comes as a surprise is the actual content of these forty photographs. What one may assume is an optical illusion, is actually the slow reality of aging. Taken over the course of forty years, resulting in one photograph a year, "The Brown Sisters" shows the strengthening bond between four sisters and the slow but beautiful reality of aging.

This photograph shows a bunch of smaller photographs put together of family portraits of "The Brown Sisters". The very top left starts off their family with the sisters being young girls and every year they took a photograph of their family to show how they've grown and changed over the years. All the sisters in the photographs are in the same positions but the poses are different.

The collection of photographs that I see are of four women organized in the same position in every picture. The photographs are black and white and contribute to the rustic and old features of the project. They are all taken outside and in casual clothes. In most of the pictures, the women are posed very closely to each other, also giving an intimate feel. Their body language may also indicate their tightly knit relationship as sisters.
