Period 3 -- Practice Critical Analysis

8/29/2016

Each week, we will write a critical analysis on a work of photographic art. An image will be published weekly on our class blog. Spend time studying the image and then write a detailed analysis of the photograph. Publish your analysis as a comment to the blog post; this comment should show the student’s name, time posted, and word count. The analysis must be posted to the original blog post in order to be graded.

Students will write eleven critical analyses per semester, and the lowest grade per semester will be dropped.

This image is very intriguing. It uses natural lighting and is direct sunlight, and this is a landscape image. The image technique is very good. The image is very pleasing to look at, and it makes you think about what you're seeing.

The major theme of this image is to expect the unexpected. For example, the owner of that car did not know that it was going to spontaneously fall into the earth in that way. The artist is telling the story and showing the aftermath of this incident. This image reminds me of disaster movies in where freak events happen. The image is beautiful and it challenges the ideas of what we think is possible and rational thus making it very interesting. I thoroughly enjoy this picture and think that it is very successful in accomplishing it's goals.

This picture is showing an earthquake or sinkhole that almost swallowed up this house and took someone's car with it. I think that this picture was taken in a country in South America near the Andes Mountains. The photographer used sun light as the lighting and a deep depth of field.

I believe that this photograph is trying to state that life is not at all predictable. It can take sharp turns left and right. The car's owner had no idea that this was going to happen and could not have done anything to avoid it at the time. I also believe that it is stating that you should appreciate what life gives and takes from you. Although, his car is gone, his house and other car are still standing (assuming the owner owns all of them). This picture really sparks my imagination in the fact that we don't know that what caused this incident.

This picture was taken in a grassy and mountainous region. It is using all of the actual colors of the buildings, the dirt, the trees, and all other things in the picture. In the image a car has fallen off of a cliff when an hole appeared. There are no people in the image and the buildings seem to be deserted other than the one car. The picture is in focus with the mountains in the background looking a little hazy.

I like this picture because it seems to show a message that disasters are looming everwhere and that you can't always prepare for them. It interests me because there can also be other messages and themes interpreted from it, such as the message that what you think is stable and consistent may turn out to be unstable and fall short of your expectations (the ground in this picture). I believe that this image is successful because the interesting predicament that the car is in catches the attention of many people and when they stop to think about it, they can interpret many different messages from it.

The picture mainly shows an earthquake that made the road collapse. There was a car in the hole. There was also a house in the picture but it didn't sink into the hole. The picture uses the sunlight and is a little bit of dark.

I think the picture is trying to remind us that life is full of unexpected. Before the earthquake began, nobody knew what is going to happen including the owner of the car. Sometimes when the unexpected happens, we need to accept it and deal with it. The picture tells me that we should always be prepared for the worst. I like the picture not only because it have a sense of beauty, but also because it can teach me some important lessons.

This photo has a natural lighting, in a deep depth of field. There are no people. It has been shot in a mountain region.
The photographer uses symbolism to illustrate that life is short. The top of the photo is full of life. There are beautiful mountains, and green plants. There's a house, a car, which means there was civilization. The bottom of the photo, there is nothing but ruble. You can see the car ruined and destroyed in the dirt which shows that goods things die. You shouldn't be distracted by all the materialistic things and instead enjoy life because sooner or later it will just become a pile of dirt.

This is an interesting picture that depicts a car falling off a small cliff. The lighting used was natural light and was taking either mid morning or close to noon since the sun is so bright. The cameraman must have used a high shutter speed to capture this photo. Using a high shutter speed makes it seem like time itself has stopped. This is how the cameraman got the car to appear like it is levitating.

I think this picture depicts how carelessness leaves to disaster. Since the drop off is close to a parking lot we can assume the car was parked there and the careless owner did not apply the handbrake, or left it in neutral. If the driver had been paying more attention his blue car would still be intact and in one piece waiting for him when he is ready to drive again.

This image is of the aftermath of a earthquake or other natural disaster.
In the middle of this seeming middle-class neighborhood in a tropical country there seems to be a large ditch with an unfortunate car trapped inside. The colors present in this picture are earthy tones with the landscape i.e. the grass, trees, rubble and earth. However the pale yellow color of the buildings add a pop of color and is a clear contrast from the darker hues. This interesting color combination surprisingly makes the picture pleasing to look at.

Natural lighting and broad depth of field was used for this image. It appears as if the photographer took this photo as a point the point of view of an onlooker on the opposite side of this ditch. The tropical palm trees remind me of childhood memories of visiting my family in india. Our background would be full of banana and coconut trees. I liked this photo because it its different from other landscape photos. most photographers enjoy to capture the beautiful wonders of nature while this photo shows the other side Mother Nature and what she’s capable of.

This is an image of a sinkhole with a car lodged inside the rubble. This is a landscape photo using beautiful natural lighting. It is in a fairly good quality although there is some grain.
I find this photo interesting because it shows how quickly someones life can change. Some of the photo looks happy with brighter colors and the other part of the photo is dark and sad.

The picture is showing a car that either rolled off the part of the cliff and is now stuck in the rock. It is also showing another car on the top of the cliff parked. The time period that the picture was taken looked like from the 60's to 70s because of the cars they are using and the house and what it looks like. I like this picture because it is different and interesting how they wanted to show the car that crashed and the car up top that is parked. It is a very interesting photo.

This picture shows a neighborhood after an earthquake hit, The picture shows some houses being fine and some other things being destroyed. The camera has a very closed "F Stop" which includes focus on many things around the image. Also do to how the mountains are lit you can tell this picture was taken in the morning or on sunset.

The image seems to depict some kind of fault or landslide that stops right before a building. There is a car in the ditch upside down. The car is so subtle that you fairly even notice it.

The world above the car looks nice and calm while the car make you feel somewhat alert as to respond to and accident. The colors seamed to have been altered. there is almost an orange tint to the world. The mountains in the distance look as if they are slightly faded.

This Picture is showing a unpredictable sinkhole that has taken a car, and almost a persons house. I believe the photo as taken in a grassy region surrounded by mountains in South America, or a little town in Mexico. The way this photo was taken was in deep depth of field. The shutter speed must have been high for this photo.

The way this photo was portrayed was that anything can happen whenever you don't see it coming. The person who owned the house is luckier than the person who owned the car. The person who owned the car did not know a sink hole would take his car into an abyss.Or to expect the unexpected. Neither did the owner of the house know there was a sink hole next to their house. The cool part about this photo is that you never know what really happened, and it sparks the audiences imagination.

This is an image of a house and 2 cars in an extreme environment. It is using beige and green colors to create a natural sense. The lighting is odd because it is natural light but there are dark shadows too. A lot of focus is drawn to the car crashed at the bottom of the cliff. The house looks like an adobe color. There isn't much motion.
There isn't quite enough light and it's a little underexposed. It is in focus. The colors are correct. There isn't much pixelation.
The colors make it pleasing with its naturalness. The photographer took the photo on a level plane. It has a deep aperture.

The photo shows the slow erosion of the cliff face. There appears to be a house on the cliff and part of it appears to be falling apart. There is a car that has fallen off.
It shows that nature cannot be limited by man. no matter what man puts in the way nature will find away around. This photo show nature slowly destroying what man has put there
