Period 3 - Critical Analysis No. 5

1/24/2022

Picture
Today you will be writing about this self-portrait image by artist Jaime Erin Johnson. Now that you have made your own self-portraits, think about the great difficulty the artist must have gone through to get this shot. What equipment might she have used? What do you think the lighting scenario was? Where was this photograph made? What kind of light did the artist use to get the shot?

This photograph was made using cyanotype, which is an antiquated photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. The artist used tea to stain the print and make it look brownish blue.

Your analysis must be 5 paragraphs, 5 sentences minimum per paragraph. Remember to post your analysis as a comment to the blog post that corresponds to your class. If you post your analysis to the wrong class's post, it will not be graded.

If you do not complete your analysis in class, you must finish it for homework by midnight.

Refer to your "How to See" handout for analyzing a photograph--
  1. Describe specifics.
  2. Describe form.
  3. Describe the content.
  4. Evaluate the image

Your analyses will be graded on:
  • meeting minimum length requirements
  • depth of organization
  • evaluation of the content
  • grammar/punctuation

This image is a self-portrait of Jaime Erin Johnson. In the scene there is Jaime Erin Johnson standing, face towards the camera holding plant leaves to cover her face. The color of the image has a blue tone from the way she processed the image. In the image, there are a lot of shadowy areas, mostly in the background. The combination of the blue tone, shadowy areas, and older style dress, makes the photography have an older feel.

In terms of self-portrait, Jaime Erin Johnson would have to use a lot of photography equipment. She would have to use a tripod to capture the image. She would have most likely used a remote as well. Although, she wouldn’t have had to use a remote if she had someone else take a photo. She did a good job in the self-portrait as it is creative.

The image is not pleasing to look at. I think this because of the blue tone, it makes the photo feel unnatural. A shallow depth of field is being used as the background isn’t in high definition. The lines of her dress lead your eye up to her face being covered by the plants. The rule of thirds is not being used as she is standing directly in the center.

The image is interesting. The fact that her face is covered makes the viewer wonder what the point of that artistic choice is. Perhaps she is insecure about how her face looks? Jaime Erin Johnson’s intention for the photo is most likely to make the viewer stop to think about what she is portraying. Personally, I think she is addressing insecurities in the way she looks.

I like some aspects of this photo but I also dislike a lot of aspects. I like that she is telling a story with the plant and you have to decipher the meaning behind it. However, I dislike the colors of the photo, I don’t find it pleasing to look at. I think the photo, for the most part, is successful, because she is clearly trying to convey a point to the audience. However, I think there could be an argument that it’s unsuccessful as the composition isn’t nice to look at.

In this photo we see the use of a green complex along with a warm yellow. I believe these colors were used to show a time period, a period from long ago. Shadows are prominent in the backdrop of trees along with the shadows shown in her dress to show texture.Highlights would be seen as the leaves that are on the ground.A lady is seen in this photo, her identity is hidden by what looks like leaves. In the background we see brush including various amounts of trees.

This photo is pleasant to look at, because it is soft and not harsh bright colors on one's eye. The lady seems to be put directly centered in the photo when the photographer took this at just eye level. When I first look at this photo my eye is drawn to the leaves covering her face. Her face along with her legs are hidden, because the photo is cut off right towards the end of her dress. Almost the whole area is covered by a certain object, may it be the landscaping or the women, but there is a negative space close to the feet of the lady.

The theme of this picture conceals a hidden identity of a woman who likes to conceal herself, may it be through long dresses covering her skin or leaves concealing her face. The story my mind sees when looking at this photo is a lady of high class, who wants to be seen, but not “objectified”. This picture reminds me of “The Vampire Diaries, because prominently in the show they show old photos of themselves from around the 1850’s. It has a conflict of what today’s day and age wears and how women dress.

I like this photo, because it grabbed my eye seeing that her face is covered by leaves that she couldn’t have from the setting around her. That would lead me to think that this photo was very planned and thought out, leading to a bigger idea of what the artist was trying to portray. This photo is successful because it caused me to look at a bigger picture, made me think of a hidden meaning, and to relate it to things I have seen in the past. I would say this is one of my top three favorite photos that we have analyzed this year. This is because of the deep meaning behind it.

This is a self-portrait of a girl standing on this dirt road surrounded by trees. She is holding multiple large leaves in front of her face. Jaime Erin Johnson is facing the camera in a dress which she is holding out. The image looks aged as if it were an old photograph that has lost its color and has been crinkled through time. The image has a rather dark lighting it also has sort of a bluish/greenish tint to it. In the background, there is a forest, and the ground she is standing on looks a bit trashed.

Since the image is a self-portrait the process of making this image would have been rather difficult. Jaime Erin Johnson would have had to use a lot of different equipment in order to achieve the image that she wanted. The rule of thirds is not being used in this image since the subject is centered in the middle of the photograph. The point of view of this image is that of the camera we are seeing this image through the camera’s eyes/lens. The focal point of the image is where the large leaves cover her face that is where my eyes go first in this image.

The lines my eyes follow in this image are the lines of her dress that lead up and around the subject. This image is pretty symmetrical except for the fact that she is holding out the side of her dress on the left side of the image making it asymmetrical. The subject does not fill the frame she is standing in the middle and there is a lot of extra space around her. The frame of the image crops off at the edge of the trees as they start to go inward.

The image feels sort of dreamlike, but it also has this really creepy feel to it that gives off an unnerving feeling. It feels as if there is a story behind this image but it is one that you just can’t seem to remember, and looking at the image gives you a weird sense of deja vu. I think the point of this image is to give a photograph to the word dream. This image is like the embodiment of those weirdly vivid dreams you have but then forget the moment you wake up. I think this image is very interesting the feelings it gives off are strange but it is a good strange that makes you think long and hard about it and makes you want to learn more.

I really like this image I like how weird it is and I really enjoy how it makes me think. The way the image looks old and has a brownish greenish tint to it makes it feel more like a dream or a distant memory. I think this image was successful and the way it uses the dark colors and oldish look that it has to show what a distant memory/dream would look like. It’s very nice to look at and I feel like it’s one of those images that the more you look at it the more you tend to notice about it. This image has got to be one of my favorites so far because of its weird feeling and the sense of deja vu that I get from it.

This photo at first glance is kind of creepy. It has an older effect and the color has a weird tone that is kind of green. It looks like the photographer added some kind of filter to make it look scary. The whole photo from the dress to the background gives me killer vibes. I would not want to be there with this person.

The first thing I noticed was how we can see their face. It looks like they are covering their face with some kind of leaf. I think it could be lettuce or some kind of dried leaf. I think it is strange how the photographer wanted this person to cover their face. It leaves some kind of mystery and I wonder what this person's face looks like.

The outfit this person is wearing is old looking as well. It seems like maybe some nightgown or dress that a woman would wear in the 50s. It also seems wrinkled or distressed. Maybe it was on purpose or they found one like it. It adds to the aesthetic and makes the person look older and more creepy.

The background in the photo also adds to the aesthetic. It seems like some creepy old woods that someone would get kidnapped in or something. I know that is bad but that is the vibe I'm getting. There is just some person in the woods covering their face in an old dress? Tell me that's not creepy.

I'm still wondering about the person. it seems to be a girl because of the dress but i wonder what their age is. She could be older or younger but I don't know. When I zoom into the photo it seems like her skin is young because there are little to no wrinkles on her hands. I guess i'll neve know though since I can't see her face.

This is an image of a woman in a dress holding a large plant over her face. She is standing in front of a bunch of trees, and part of the sky is visible. The photo is not in full color, but has the brownish tint you see on old photographs. It also looks like it has creases on it, making it look even older. Because of this, it is kind of difficult to tell what kind of lighting was used, but it seems natural.

This image is pleasing to look at because it is a good quality photo. The dress kind of directs your eyes to the plants she is holding. There is extra space around the subject. This space is mostly filled by trees. The image is cropped where the trees begin to part.

The photographer did not use the rule of thirds and the subject is in the middle. It was taken from neither bird’s eye or bug’s eye view, and is closer to eye-level with the woman. It has a deep depth of field and you can clearly see the trees behind her. The focal point could be either the white dress or the plant held in front of the woman’s face. This image is not symmetrical, but the subject is right in the middle of the frame.

A theme in this image seems to be mystery, due to the woman’s hidden face. This photo is slightly dreamlike, but it doesn’t really remind me of anything. I think this image is interesting. I like how the photographer made it look tea-stained. I also think the use of the plant is cool.

I like this image because the idea is interesting. It’s cool how the photographer chose to cover her face. It’s also cool how the photo looks old even though it isn’t. I would say this photo is successful. The concept is intriguing and the photo is good quality.

This image is a photo of a person. She is holding what appears to be a leaf or plant in front of her face. She is surrounded by trees. The image looks really vintage too. It doesn’t have any color in it at all.

This image is not pleasant to look at. I do not like the colors of the image. The image looks very plain and boring. The woman is centered in the center of the image. The image doesn’t have very much extra space around. It is well spaced out with only trees in the background.

This image reminds me of something really old. It reminds me of this because of the colors in the photo. Her dress also makes the image look old because the dress is old. There is a theme of her identity being concealed. She conceals her identity with the plant hiding her face.

I do not like this photo. I don’t like the way the photo looks or the colors in the photo. I also don’t like how dark it is. It is really hard to see the background and the trees. I don’t like that she is hiding her face with the plants. I think this image is well made but it is still not appealing to look at. It is good with the amount of space and centering the main focus of the image.

The image is of a lady in an old white dress covering her face with the leaves of a plant. The lady is standing at the edge of a forest with many tall trees behind her. The colors are almost black and white, and are very gray and dreary. There is one person in the image, the previously mentioned woman. The lady covers her face, and it isn’t visible.
The image is pleasing to look at. The focal point is the woman in the center of the picture. The image is not framed by anything. The subject doesn’t fill the image and there is some extra space. The photo doesn’t cut off anything but the bottom of the woman’s dress and her feet.
I don’t see any themes in this image. I also don’t believe that the image is telling a story, at least not by itself, as it's very hard to extract a story from just this one image. I don’t know what the author’s intention was in making the image, however if I had to guess it may have something to do with hiding their true identity from others. The image doesn’t remind me of anything in particular. I also don't think that it is challenging any political or social beliefs.
I like the photograph. As said before I find it pleasing to look at. While the colors are bland, I feel they suit the image. The mystery of the image is also enticing. What does the woman’s face look like? Why is she hiding her face?

This is a photo of a person in a dress who is holding leaves over their face. The person is holding the side of their skirt with one of their hands and the leaves in the other hand. The coloring of this image is very interesting because it is black and white and looks extremely old, but this photo was taken recently. This photo looks like it was taken during the day because the lighting looks pretty much normal, and it doesn't look like it was taken during the night. There are a lot of dark shadows in the background, and the person’s dress stands out due to the contrast in their colors.
I like this photo because the colors are very calm and not very vibrant. I like the way the picture looks because it looks graceful because of the way the person holds their dress and the plant. I don’t think the rule of thirds is being used in this photo because the focal point, the girl in the dress, is in the center of the picture. There is a shallow depth of field because the trees look a little blurry and out of focus while the girl looks to be in focus. The girl doesn’t fill the whole image; there are trees that fill up the blank space.
I think the artist’s intention for this photo was to look whimsical and graceful. I believe that the artist decided to be creative and express themselves through this photo. I think this image could represent a memory or dream that the artist had because it seems dreamlike. The photo looks old, but it was taken recently, which means that the artist had the intention to make the photo look older. I think this image is interesting precisely because it doesn’t make sense; I believe that because it doesn't make sense, it lets the audience imagine what the photo means.
I like this photo because it shows a sort of sadness. While it looks incredibly graceful, it also looks like there is a sense of sadness due to the coloration. This photo was meant to spark emotions, which is extremely interesting. I think this photo was successful because it captivates the audience. The image captivates the audience because it is unclear what is going on or why the person’s face isn’t seen.
The artist may have used a tripod to take this photo because it looks like it may have been a longer exposure which means that the camera needs to be held extremely still. I think natural lighting was used because there doesn’t seem to be extremely harsh lighting. It looks like this photo was taken in the woods because there are trees in the background. I think the photo looks better because of the natural lighting.

The woman looks to be holding a few pieces of extremely large lettuce in front of her face. She’s wearing a white dress, which creates contrast with the dark forest behind her. The photo looks relatively old based on its condition. The setting of the image is entirely in nature, with no buildings in view. The woman seems to be posing for the photo, rather than it being a candid shot.
The woman is mostly centered in the photo, with her being the main focus. It was shot in black and white, possibly as a choice or just because it’s old. The woman is surrounded by negative space, which acts as the background of the photo. The image is framed by the forest surrounding the woman. The image is slightly asymmetrical because of the way she is holding her dress with one hand.
Based on the description of the photo, I know that the artist intended this to be a self portrait. She is probably trying to capture what she believes to be the most authentic image of herself. I think that she intended the story of the photo to be interpreted individually by each viewer. I think the image is extremely delicate looking, which makes it beautiful. The woman clearly wanted this to reflect the way she sees herself.
I definitely like the aesthetic of the photo. I think its success is entirely up to the artist since it is a self portrait. If she thinks it accurately reflects herself, then it can be deemed successful. I like its delicacy and old age. Personally, I would say it’s successful.

This image depicts a woman in a dress holding a very big plant that covers her face. The photo was taken in black and white so there really are no colors.. Maybe the photographer wanted to add an old effect. It’s hard to tell because there isn’t much difference in color, but it looks like there wasn’t any artificial light used in the photo. The photo also has very dark shadows which adds to the detail by creating more depth.
I like that the photo was taken where the subject is in the middle of the frame. I really like that because, along with the shadows, I think the photo looks very mysterious and kind of ominous. Although the rule of thirds is not being used, I don’t think that takes away from the photo. I can’t really tell, but it looks like a shallow depth of field was most likely used because the trees in the background don’t seem to be in focus. The space around her is all covered by trees.
I think the fact that the woman is holding up her dress and her face is covered by the leaves, along with the fact that the photo itself is black and white, and is crinkled and has specks to look old, makes one big theme creepiness to me. To me, the fact that the lines look really clean and purposeful makes it look like painting to me. Something about the way the right hand looks when I zoom in on it also adds to this. Although it is very simple, I really like this photo because it’s very interesting. I think the fact that the photo is so unspecific makes the meaning up to the viewer.
I think this photo was very successful. In fact, this is one of my favorite photos I’ve seen yet. I love the old crinkle so much. I also really like that it’s so simple, yet interesting. She almost looks like a creature with the leaves covering her face. Lastly, I think that the black and white was the best option for this photo because it almost seems to take away this sort of comfort in color.

The image looks like a well-made and preserved old photo. It looks like it is of a woman carrying a large handful of lettuce from some random forest, king of like a gather coming back from some forest with her hand full of gathered items. There are wrinkles and dots all over the photo, which looks like it was purposefully made. It looks like the artist is using dull old-fashioned colors to make it look more trendy, but in a delicate way as it gives the subjects in the photo a foggier (mysterious) identity. Also, the colors make the photo really soft, cozy, and beautiful somehow. The lighting is dark and cloudy(like a dark cloudy day). There is a woman with a white dress in the center of the image covering her face with large cabbage or lettuce leaves. There is also a creepy forest in the background which looks as if there was something haunting it. What’s happening? Well, she is gathering lettuce leaves from a woodland.

The image is not pleasing but more calming to look at because of the soft/gloomy colors. The unpleasing part about it is it’s kind of like an old memory that makes you sad thinking about because it won’t happen again. The mysterious woman is obviously the main subject because it is the first thing you look at wonder about(as in her face) when the image flashes your eyes. The lettuce leaves kind of crop off her face, but it is probably just to give us weird vibes or something. The negative space is the forest/surroundings/background and the positive space is in the middle where the woman and her good-smelling lettuce leaves are.

I think the idea is for us to feel different about a photo we’ve never seen before. Like when you see someone enjoying the smell of something you would usually see their faces smiling and snorting in the nice essence of the object like a hog. But now I see this photo is trying to use body expression to show the lettuce leaves smell good. She lifts up her dress with delight and stuffs the leaves in her face to get the feeling, texture, and smell of the lettuce leaves so that she can never forget how good of an idea it was to gather lettuce leaves from the wilderness instead of choosing to go to the supermarket. The story is now obviously trying to tell you naturally processed/gathered things are a lot better than artificial ones. I think the artist made it to try to show us facial expressions are the only ones that can show what we are feeling. This reminds me of the lettuce I gave to my tortoises this morning.

I honestly don’t know wether I like it or not because it is very nice image but I don’t really connect with the theme or image that much. It has a nice effect to it but the image or focal point isn’t really something I can connect with(yet). But when I saw one of the other photos the photographer made in person; it really interiuged me by how large the Original Photo(OP) was and how beautiful the colors and the image looked altogether. I guess some art you got to see in person before you judge it from somewhere else(online in this case). I guess I just “hated” or felt disconnected in this photo because of the theme.

Is this image successful or unsucessful? Both…but this time I wont make it confusing because I don’t think i remember getting any sleep the night before that day so for some reason I was trying to make a point or something out of nothing!!!!So get sleep before you write out your essay’s and analysis’s is what I’m saying. It is successful art but when you see it in person and you know what it takes to make it/how it’s made; it is a lot more CHEVERE and successful than just some picture on your computer. Unsuccessful? Well, for me it was a lot to take in to try and connect with/ disconnecting, but I’ll get it someday. But there is a lot more photos made in this cool way to connect with so i’ll give this art a pass. I also like these photographs a lot too and they are on my top favorites(for now) because of how cool it looks in person. I also wonder if the photographer makes photos in any other ways, and I know this is there thing but I’m just wondering.

Is this image successful or unsuccessful? Both…but this time I won't make it confusing because I don’t think I remember getting any sleep the night before that day so for some reason I was trying to make a point or something out of nothing!!!!So get sleep before you write out your essay’s and analysis is what I’m saying. But there are a lot more photos made in this cool way to connect with so i’ll give this art a pass. I also like these photographs a lot too and they are on my top favorites(for now) because of how cool they look in person. I also wonder if the photographer makes photos in any other ways, and I know this is their thing but I’m just wondering.
