Period 3 -- Critical Analysis #13

2/9/2017

For this week's critical analysis, you will navigate to the Elements of Design tutorial on the class website, which can be found HERE, or by hovering over Technical/Tutorials at the top of this page.

On this page, you will note several different visual examples (photographs, paintings, sculptures, etc.) for each element of design. Your task is to choose 1 example within each element and write 1 paragraph explaining how the given element is incorporated into the image/painting/sculpture/etc. You will do this for each element of art, making 8 paragraphs total. Your paragraph must be 4 sentences minimum per paragraph. When you are writing, be sure to list the name of the artist whose work you are referencing.

Here is an example:

SPACE

This is a photograph by an artist named Stephen Shore. This image uses the design element of space because space is implied within the billboard itself, but also the area around the billboard. The billboard shows a depictions of a mountain range landscape, suggesting infinite space, even though it is enclosed by a rectangular frame. There is also infinite space surrounding the billboard, as the clouds, landscape, and mountain range reach off into the distance.
Picture
Your analyses will be graded on the following criteria:
  • grammar/sentence structure
  • depth of analysis
  • organization of thought (don't ramble)
  • meeting minimum length requirement

If you do not finish in class, you must complete this for homework before class on Friday. Do not overthink this—just write about what you see. Good luck!

This image is of a bilboard with a picture of a mountain on it. It is using bright colors. Mostly blues, yellows, and greens. Its using natural sunlight. Its in pature in the middle of a road.
The image is in correct exposure. Its in focus. All the colors are correct. There is no pixelation. It is in adequate resolution.
It is pleasing to look at. The rule of thirds is being used. It could be in a bugs eye. The lines of the clouds direct my eyes to the billboard. The image is symmetrical.
The subject doesn't fill the frame. The image is cropping off the rest of the pasture and part of the road. The positive space is the billboard and the negative space is the rest of the image that surrounds the bilboard. This image is very beautiful and interesting. I do like it and i think the photographer was successful in making this image.

Color

This image mainly has a green and yellowish hue. with the exception of the road and the blue sky. All of the colors here are light and pleasant to look at. The lightest value in this image is probably the grass by the sign. The green plants are mostly dull but everything else has more pleasant color to it

Line

This image has a lot of horizontal lines. Some of them can be seen in the wires of the telephone polls. Another instance where horizontal lines are seen, is the edge of the fence. There are also some curved lines that are pleasing to look at in the exposure. For example some of the curved lines are in the clouds and the mountains morphing into the back drop of the blue sky.

Shape.

The Sign in the middle of the image is in the shape of a rectangle but it seamlessly fazes into the backdrop. The Grooves in between the fences make the shapes of rectangles as well. The clouds all have their own distinct shapes and so do the mountains. The plants by the road have a somewhat pyramid shape to them.

Form.

This sign in the middle of the exposure has the form of a 3 dimensional object. Even though it is on a flat 2d surface it appears to part of the scenery in the background. You can also tell how far some of the hills in the back drop are due to their shape. If they are smaller and darker that means they are farther away then the bigger and lighter hills.

Space

In the negative space of the exposure we can see the mountains in the background. We can also see the fields in the negative space in the background as well. In the positive space we see the sign with the road near it. Also near the road are plants and a gate to a field.

Value

In this shot there is a wide variety of values. the brightest value is probably the green plants in the front, or the yellowish grass near the road. The darkest value is the dark blue on the sing near the road. The middle gray value is probably the color of the mountains in the distance.

Texture

To the left of the fence the texture of the scenery looks very soft. When we cross over to the other side the texture turns from looking soft to looking hard. Another soft texture would probably be the clouds and the sky. While the mountains look rough to the touch therefore having a rough texture.

Motion/time

In this image nothing was set up to imply motion at all. Everything looks calm and peaceful. It feels like if this was a video it would probably be the same in terms of movement. The only thing that appears to be moving would probably be The green plants casually swaying in the wind.

This photograph depicts a valley surrounded by mountains. This valley appears to be inhabited by a small town. The reason I believe this is because of the fences, power lines, and the road leading to it. At the center of the frame, there is a billboard depicting a lake surrounded by trees and a large mountain overhead. The billboard is not in good repair.

The lighting is bright, being illuminated by natural light. The valley is covered by bright bushes and foliage brush. The image is in focus around the billboard, which appears to be blocking the view of the small town. There is adequate resolution present, although the faraway mountains seem a bit more pixelated than the landscape. All this combined creates a correct, bright color in the general image.

This image is pleasing to look at due to the details listed above. The lines, which are the clouds and the power lines, also add a good vibe to the image, directing your eyes toward the billboard. The angle from the which the photographer took the image seems a bit higher than a human perspective. It might have been taken from a rolled-down car window. The image also frames off where it believes that what is in the frame is all you need to see.

This image has given me a thought of false advertising while I was typing this. The billboard is obviously meant to cover up the real truth like a mask and replace it with something more appealing.I believe that this is also why the artist took the picture; to depict the falsity of some people and their attempt at covering up the truth. This image reminds me of long car trips and looking at the billboards, attempting to read what is on it before it disappears behind us. This image is beautiful in a way of showing the truth.

Lines

This image by Bernd and Hilla Becher depict lines that direct your eye towards the center of each tower. The lines mostly seem to be represented by supports and scaffolding which is holding the structure up. Although, they are sometimes depicted as pipes climbing the sides of some towers. The lines also all seem to be vertical, which fits into the supports' purposes as firm and rigid scaffolding.

Shape

This painting by Pablo Picasso depicts many free form shapes. These shapes are meant to be free. This is because all of the shapes are performing several different tasks and duties. These shapes all fit into the painting, as they fulfill their purpose of being sparritic. These shapes all tie in to the painting.

Form

This piece of art is made by Sol Lewitt. These forms are cubes which are all the same dimensions except the color. These forms use their purpose to depict a similarity within different objects. They are all meant to show that objects are the same no matter what differentialities.

Space

This photograph by Henry Moore depicts the space in a sculpture. Within this space, there is a shape. This shape is another sculpture, which shows depth of hollowness. The space ties into the image by showing what the image is trying to depict.

Color

This image by Sandy Skoglund depicts a completely blue room with many goldfish inside it. The hues are cyan and orange. The values are meant to be light. The value and color is meant to be bright by using the orange fish to brighten up a very dull cyan room.

Value

This painting by Jacque-Louis David depicts a man holding swords up to the heavens. The artist uses value to show the people in the light while everything else is dark. This is meant to show purity and darkness surrounding the purity. The value fulfills its purpose at depicting this.

Texture

This piece of art was made by Meret Oppenheim. This shows texture in the way of the cup being made of fur. This is meant to show falsity, as I believe the cup would feel like a normal ceramic cup rather than feeling like fur. I also believe this goes for the spoon and the bowl.

Motion

These images by Edward Muybridge was used to prove a theory of whether horses lift all four of their legs when running. This is meant to show the motion of the horse. This motion is compositional, meant to show the horse running. This is why there is more than one photograph of the horse.

I like this image because it is very calming. This image is very quiet and peaceful. This image has very nice colors in it. I really like this image because it is also very charming.

The shapes in this image are the billboard that is a square. Another shape in this image is the fence. Also a shape in this image is The clouds. Also the mountains in this photograph which i really like.

This image has form. The form in this image is the billboard. Also the form in this image is the tall plants they are very pleasing to look at. Also the mountains are a form in this image which are very nice.

The positive space in this image is the billboard and the fence. The negative space in this image is the grass and plants. Also more negative space is the mountains. Also more negative space in this image is the sky and the clouds.

The colors in they image are very nice. The colors are blue is one of the primary colors. Another one is blue which is the sky and some of the billboard. Another primary color is yellow which is in some of the billboard and also some in the grass. Some secondary colors are green which is the grass.

The values in this image are very cool. The values in this image are the lightest value which is the blue sky and white clouds. The middle gray in this image is the grass and plants. The darkest value in this image is not very dark. The darkest value is the road which is more of a grey.

The textures in this image are very different. Some of the textures are the grass which looks more rough. But it some parts of the grass looks more soft and smooth. More texture is the billboard which looks very smooth to touch. Also another texture would be the mountains which look very bumpy and rough.

The motion and time in this image is very natural. Some of the motion is the sky which is actually looks like it is moving to me but very slowly. Some other motion and time would be the grass. The grass looks to me like it is blowing in the wind. Some other motion would be an illusion. Which I think is the billboard it looks like the water is moving a little in the billboard even though it is not.

This image uses line. This piece of art is by Sol Lewitt. It uses one by all the different lines in the boxes inside of the art. It also has some vertical lines and its very awake and rigid.

This piece of art is using shape. This piece of art is by Piet Mondrian. This image uses shape by the elect of art which is flat. The shapes are geometric like squares in this piece of art. This piece of art is also very bright.

This piece of art is using form. This piece of art is by Rembrandt Van Rijn. This is using form by including height width and depth in this drawing. This image is two-dimensional. I really like this image.

This photograph is using space. This photograph is by Stephen Shore. Its using space by using the area between objects. In this image its using space from the billboard and around the billboard. As in the negative spaces which is the grass and fence and sky. The positive space is the billboard.

Color an example would be a piece of art . This painting is using color in all different types of forms. It is using the 3 types of primary colors. Which are red, green and blue. This painting is also using value. Their are some day and some light shades in this painting.

This painting is using value. This piece of art is by Jacque-Louis David. He is using texture in this painting by the darkness and light tones in the colors in this painting. The white is the lightest value and black is the darkest value. What ever is darker than white but lighter than black is called middle gray.

This photograph is using texture. This image is by Meret Oppenheim. The photographer is using texture by
the quality that is seen and felt in the image. The texture could be rough or smooth. But, in this image it is ver smooth and soft.

This photograph is using motion and time. This image is by Alexander Calder. He is using motion and time by the motion in this image and it looks like in this image that the painting in the image is moving. He is also using illusion in this photograph. The movement can be either literal or compositional. Literal meaning actually moving and compositional meaning illusion in this image.

This image shows an advertisement of some kind in front of a landscape. The advertisement board picture looks like it blends in with the back ground the first time you look at it. Being centered it catches the eye first. The only reason i noticed The ad wasn't real was the lake that was seemingly floating in the air. This caused me to compare the ad to the real world around it.
The road trails of into the distance to the right making everything look so far away. It is far away but you don't really feel it until you see the road. The subtle disappearance of the road and fence lead to feelings of solace and almost calm. The trailing mountains give the same effect but in a slightly different way. The road you can't see how far you just know it is but with the mountains you can gage the distance.
The clouds above the ad look like they are lines. These line look as if hey are pointing towards the middle of the image. This might be another reason why the advertisement stuck out so much. That and the posts holding up the ad point to the center as well. The tip of the mountain looks like it is the center of the image.
The empty space around he focus of the picture is as eye drawing and the focus after you look at it of course. This will bring your attention to all the grass and deep blue sky. the color of the grass seems tuned down in a way though. Almost as to emphasize the sky instead.

The lines in this photo include the horizontal and vertical lines on the outline of the billboard as well as the horizontal lines in the picture on the billboard. The picture in the billboard is of a naturalistic scene of a mountain and lake and forest. The lines help make it look more calm and untouched by humans. The lines in the picture overall make it look calmer and more natural, which is what the photographer intended.

For the most part, the shapes in the picture are squares. The fences and the billboard are both in the shape of squares. These squares make the picture look more manmade because of its perfect shape. Also, the background shape of the sky is unshaped and looks very vast.

Form is shown through the background of the picture. The depth of the field is one of the forms shown. The depth of the field makes the picture look much more alone because it shows how far back this empty field goes. The form of the field and the background mountains makes it look much more naturalistic and untouched.

Space is shown in the picture in the background field and the sky. The sky looks full of space because of a lack of many clouds. There are a few clouds but not enough so that you can see the entire sky and how far it extends. The space of the sky makes the picture seem more empty and vast because it is not filled.

The field has darker greens that get duller the farther back they go. This makes the field look much older. The primary color in the picture is blue, as in the sky and the billboard. This makes these two look much more lively and exciting.

The value of the picture is mainly gray as in the tone of the clouds and the fences and street. The clouds look grayer and like they had shadows on them even though they cast shadows onto the ground. I believe the photographer intended for them to look the way as a paradox to make people think more about the mood of the picture. The gray value makes it look brooding but not angry.

The textures in the picture include plants, street, and fences. The plants seem to be rough and even prickly. The street and fences both look to be hard and rough. This makes the picture look uninviting and unwelcoming.

The motion of the picture is shown in the clouds. The remains of the cloud are still in the air from where it was previously. This seems to be the only thing in motion in the picture. This makes the picture seem alone because as the has passed the only thing that has moved has been the clouds in the sky.

Kyle Nevitt link

This image was taken by Hiroshi Sugimoto. It uses lines by making the horizon a horizontal line. This implies a calm and quiet setting, which it is. The ocean looks to be very calm and almost waveless and the line of the horizon implies that it continues to be that way.

This image was made by Henri Matisse. It uses shape by having multiple oddly built shapes. The shapes are two dimensional and do not imply depth. The oddity of the shapes makes the picture look more rough and human made.

This image was made by Rembrandt van Rijn. It uses form by making the hair look three dimensional. The lines are drawn in cray motion but also on top of each other to add depth. The depth makes the man look real and not just a two dimensional figure.

This image was taken by Stephen Shore. It uses space in the sky and background field. The sky looks so full of space because it is lacking clouds. This allows you to see how vast the sky is.

This image is by Steve McCurry. It uses color in the cloak of the girl, the background, and her eyes. Her eyes are a light green color and look very interesting. The cloak stands out because it is very bright and fairly light.

This picture is by Keith Carter. It uses value by having a white swan and black background. The value of the swan is extremely light and adds beauty. The value of the background grass is extremely dark and thus looks black, so it makes the swan look even more beautiful.

This picture is by Meret Oppenheim. It uses texture by showing how the fur looks in real life. It makes the fur look fuzzy and comfortable. It adds enough detail to the fur to make it seem like you can feel the fur in the picture.

This picture is by Olafur Eliasson. It uses motion by showing the individual drops of water. The water is falling when the picture was taken and you can see that it was on its way to hitting the ground. The picture was taken quick enough to capture individual drops so you can see the motion of the drops.

This image is of really pretty landscape with a random bill bardin the middle showing a an equally good looking landscape which kind of matches the two photos. This image is using low brightness and a decent amount of saturation. The image was probably taken in a very bright day but looks better if the image brightness was to be lowered. In this image the billboard seems to try to match what could be on the other side or what could continue if you were to keep going on the road.

This image is in focus and is using high aperture so that the kense doesn't just focus on the billboard but also on the rest of the landscape. Yes this image the color corrected, and has adequate resolution. Yes this image is pleasing to look at, the image is composed of many different features like billboards, trees, mountains, fences, and more hills around the area.
No the rule of thirds is not being used, the image is focused on the center of the scale and not on the side. And the mage doesn't have a main focal point due to the high aperture ut the billboard is the most intended object in this image.

The negative space in this image is probably the nets on the side of the road and some of the other poles included in the image. If this image was to continue its scale you would be able to see more of the mountains in the range. I guess that one of the ideas focused on this image is that the road ahead will be beautiful due to the image on the billboard. The artist’s main intentions for this image was to tell the viewer to keep moving forward because thing get beautiful. This image reminds me of when I used to do a lot of road trips with the family and when we used to go to TAOS or some other mountain/ ski areas.

I find this image pretty interesting simply because of the different messages that it could mean to different people. So yes, i find the photographer very successful.

Line :

There are horizontal lines going across the image showing the stillness of the photo. The curved hilltops in the back also show tranquility. The image has no people or animals or anything that moves. This is a landscape photo and it's tranquility is given by those lines.

Shape :

The only prominent shape is the rectangular billboard. It shows that it is one of the only man made things in the photo. The rectangle is a picture of nature. I consider that ironic.

Form :

The form is probably the most interesting thing about this photo. The depth perception that you get from a normal landscape photo is thrown off by another landscape photo. This is because there is depth close to you and away from you. The 2 landscapes are also sort of similar because of the skies.

Space :

There are many examples of space in this photo. The skies on the billboard and background match to mace a singular, undivided space. This space takes up most of the photo. It gives the photo its beauty as well.

Color :

As I said, the sky gives the photo its beauty, but not just by the space it uses, but by its color, too. The are some orange highlights in the grass. These highlights complement the sky's color. These colors work together very well.

Value :

The fence and road in the foreground have an non - extreme dark tone. The rest of the photo has a middle / light tone. The road and fence, in my opinion show what humanity has left on this planet. We have made our mark with these dark tones.

Texture :

The clouds in the sky have texture. They may not actually feel like anything, but visually they look soft and fluffy. They are lighter and contrast the hard road and fence. This give the photo a break from the seriousness

Motion/Time :

This photo might not show motion, if any, but it shows time. The photo shows how long these things have been there. The fence is rotten and falling and the road is in need of repair. The photo shows the effects time has on inanimate objects.

Harrison Fentress

Line :

This photo is by Bernd and Hilla Becher and it is a collage of water towers. It gives excellent example of line by the vertical lines it uses. The vertical lines from the support structures demand attention and shows strength. The height and size of the towers make the lines longer and gives them more effect.

Shape :

This is a photo by Piet Mondrian and it shows a good example of shape. It is made of all different, bright colored squares and that makes the photo look busy. It's pattern reminds me of an aerial view of busy city roads. The sharpness and uniformity of the squares adds to that feeling.

Form :

This picture was made by Sol Lewitt of a collage of brightly colored cubes. It uses form well by creating an illusion from the arrangement of the lines. Though the picture is clearly flat, depth is created in the form of the cubes. It makes you take a hard look at the photo.

Space :

There are many examples of space in this photo by Steven Shore. The skies on the billboard and background match to mace a singular, undivided space. This space takes up most of the photo. It gives the photo its beauty as well.

Color :

In this photo by Steve McCurry of a lady in a hooded robe, color is used complementary. The green in her eyes and the background versus her red robes create a unique effect. Between these two colors is her expression which is just as unique and optically magnetic. This photo uses color to direct your eyes to the important part of the photo.

Value :

In the photo by Andrew Miksys of the woman smoking, value is used well. The value shows a dim light from behind the camera's point of view. This light accentuates the smoke in the air and the apparent age of the woman. The value's contrast in different parts of the photo gives the photo an artistic look.

Texture :

The photo of the tea set made of fur by Meret Oppenheim is a good example of texture. It makes the normally hard, cold tea set look soft and warm. I think this illusion is for ironic use. I think this because of the fanciness that is thought of with tea cups that has been changed to a cute connotation.

Motion/ Time :

This photo by Eadweard Muybridge of a running horse uses motion and time well. This photos were taken in burst of a moving horse which is a very rare style. It gives the photo a fluid feeling. The photo give a different perspective on the way things move.

1. Line
This is a work by Bernd and Hilla Becher. There are many lines in this image. The lines are on the houses. These lines can show us the structure of the houses.

2. shape
This is a work by Paul Strand. We can see that there are shadow on the table, which create shapes. I think that the pat with light on is the shape that the artist want to show us.The shapes are geometric and organized.

3. form
This is a work by Sol Lewitt. The drawing is a cube. But one part of the cube is cut off. But if we look at it another way, it can be another cube coming out of the big cube. The drawing is completed by using lines, which is another element. The combine of the two elements is very interesting.

4. space
This is a work by Albert Bierstadt. In the work, there are lots of space. The work is not very big but the space inside is huge. We can see the huge empty space between the mountains and above the lake. The large amount of space show me the power of nature and the beauty of the world.

5. color.
This is a photo by William Eggleston. In the picture, there are large amount of same colors. The picture is divided into three parts. The sky, which is blue; the car and the box, which are yellow; and the ground and the tiers, which are black. The three colors coordinate eat other and make up into a great picture.

6. value
This is a work by Keith Carter. The picture is about a swan on the ground. The picture uses two extreme color, which are black(darkest) and white(lightest). The artist use these two color to form a contrast. However, there is also s little bit of black inside the white part, which makes the image even better.

7. texture
This is a work by Edward Weston. The picture is a lettuce. We can see the texture of the lettuce. The photo is black and white, so we can see the texture even more clearly. The texture is smooth and beautiful.

8. Motion Time
This is a work by Edward Muybridge. There are lots of images in the work. They are bout a running horse. We can see the motion of the horse running when we look at the pictures one by one.

Line:

I find this image very calming because of the way the photographer made sure the lines show as if it were a lonely place. The horizontal lines show the calmness of the image. The vertical lines show how rigid the sign is. The lines of the clouds show the movement of the clouds above.

Shape:

This image has many shapes, and most of the objects in this image make up an image. The shape of the billboard show how gigantic it is, the size and shape of the billboard show the its power over the small things under it. The shape too the clouds show the complexity of the image. The fence shows a lot of shapes that shows how it is just like Piet Mondrian"s painting, very complex.

Form:

The fence has a lot of form in a 3d form. The billboards form is made up of its enormous height. The billboards form is made up of a 2d shape. The billboards form is also a painting.

Space:

This image has a bunch of space around the object. The billboard itself takes up a lot of space in the image. But the billboard is surrounded with open air that takes up most of the images space. The clouds also take up most of the space.

Color:

This image has a lot of color in every area. This image has most of its color in the sky and the ground. Most of the hue comes from the ground. The intensity is really high in this image.

Value:

This image has a lot of value. This image as more whit than middle grey, or black. This image is very bright and has a lot of value. Most of the value is in the sky.

Texture:

This image has a lot of texture. The texture of the ground is mostly in the ground. I picture myself in the place touching the rough grass. The billboards poles look like they're filled with rust. The fence looks like you would get a splinter because it is rough.

Motion:

The motion in this image would be the clouds. The motion would also be very high in that area because of the wind. In this image it looks as if the grass would be waving around the air.

In this photo there are many lines. The power lines are diagonal lines that lead your eyes to the billboard. Along with those the lines on the support of the billboard give a sense of structure holding up the billboard. The fence contains lines dragging your vision past the billboard to look to the background.
An example of an organic shape is the mountain in the billboard. It is sturdy looking and stands out in the photo. The clouds are another example of an organic shape. They are very calming and have a soft tone to them to balance out the mountain.
The image has many objects that contain form. The clouds although 2d can also be 3d. They are a free flowing object that simulate 2 dimensional. The mountains in the background are also free flowing objects representing sturdiness.
The billboard also has space around it. The space around it contains the grass and fence. Not only does it have space around it, it has space within it as well. It contains depth and gives an illusion of space within even though it is a 2d object.
The mountain has a cool color along with a warm yellow light coming off of it giving it a warm feel. The image also uses a lot of blue. The image is very cold except for that warm yellow light.
The blue used is not only one shade. It contains many values ranging from the light blues of the sky, to the dark deep blues in the water. There are also many values of green used in all of the shrubbery. There are any shades of white also found in the clouds giving a sense of depth.
The clouds have a very nice soft texture to them. It makes the photo look more soft and relaxing. The grass also has the same soft looking texture that works alongside the clouds. The road has a very rough texture that counters the softness of the clouds and he grass.
The clouds portray motion in the image.

This is a photograph by an artist named Stephan Shore. The element of design used in this is the element of lines. The lines of the long fence adds structure to the image. It leads our eyes to look at the entire image, because it even leads us to the edge of the image. The horizontal lines indicate the calmness and passiveness of the environment.

Another element of design used is the element of shape. The shape that stands out the most is the rectangular, flat billboard sing. It is interesting how Shore used this minimalistic two dimensional object as his subject. He used this as an very powerful way to express the meaning of the image.

The element of form is additionally incorporated into this picture. The three dimensional component of the flat billboard adds depth to the subject and makes it alluring. Also, the thick and fluffy clouds gives the sky intensity and prevents it from looking too simple and unappealing.

Space is another element of design that shore uses. It is clear that this is the most distinctive element of design he uses to express the meaning of this image. The billboard is the subject, but the space is also implied with the area around it. The mountain range is the painting on the building. However, their is space around the billboard matches and blends with the billboard landscape. This suggests infinite space.

The element of design, color, is heavily used in this image. Their is a wide variety of hues that complement each other: blue, green, and pops of yellow. The Intensity of color is pretty bright. Monochromatic blue colors are used in the sky to further give the sky some depth. The blend of primary and secondary colors is also very intriguing.

An element of design used in this picture is the element of value. The darkest colors on this image is the dark brown from the wooden fence. The lightest element is the white clouds and detailing on the mountains. These white areas are used to highlight the highest points in the image.

The element of design of texture makes the image more realistic and gives it dimension. Shore manages to show the viewer a variety of texture. He shows us the coarseness of the pasture of dead grass on the ground, and the fluffy, cotton candy-like clouds in the sky. Even though this is on a screen or paper, we still feel and understand the environment.

The final element of design is motion/time. This is a still-life image. Motion is not directly implied here but the settings of the picture is on the side of a small paved road. This can indicate the absence of motion relative to a moving car that you would normally be in while being on a highway. However, this image indicated the viewer to stop on the side of the road and see the beauty of your environment or nature around you.

LINE:

This piece of art is by Sol Lewitt. His usage of lines gives the main structure to this artwork. He uses horizontal lines which represents calmest and passiveness; diagonal lines to represent activeness; and curved lines to show fluid motion. Using all these lines correlation together creates a unique unity of opposites. It’s really interesting to see the horizontal and diagonal lines, opposites, connected and complement each other.

SHAPE:

This artwork is by a photographer in the early 20th century named Paul Strand. The geometric rectangles in the architecture are clearly the subject and main focus of the image. The large size of these rectangles in contrast with the smaller pedestrians creates a scale that draws our eyes to the shapes. The simplicity of the black and white photo forces us to focus on the shapes.

FORM:

This is another artwork by the american artist, Sol Lewitt. This piece of quite different from the other examples because the artist uses form to sort of play tricks with your eye. This confusion initiates interest and makes it intriguing. The artwork consists of a giant cube with volume; height, width, and depth. However the top right corner is altered to make you see a small cube sticking out or you could perceive it as a missing corner (a chunk of the giant cube is gone).

SPACE:

This photograph is by an artist named Stephan Shore. It is clear that space is the most distinctive element of design used to express the meaning and substance of this image. The billboard is the subject with positive space but space is also implied with area around it(negative space). The mountain range is the painting on the building. However, their is space around the billboard matching and blending with the billboard landscape suggesting infinite space.

COLOR:

This image is by photographer, Steve McCurry. Color plays a huge role in this stunning image. Firstly, the young girl’s bright eyes contrast her dark features such a her skin and hair. The different green monochromatic hues create depth the her striking feature. It matches the green under layers of her garments and the background. Also the red and green color correlation shows the play of primary and secondary colors complimenting each other.

VALUE:

This painting is by the Italian artist, Caravaggio. Since their is a single source of light depicted in this artwork,it creates many shadows and variations of tones. We can clearly see the shadows cast by the opened window cover at the top of the painting. However Caravaggio also payed attention to detail such as the slight shadows of the mens’s calves and legs making this art more believable and realistic. The light from the window also highlights the high points of the image such as the mens’s bare head, nose, or even entire face.

TEXTURE:
This famous painting is by the Dutch post-Impressionist painter, Vincent Van Gogh. He uses different techniques of brush strokes. Depending on the stroke, it represented a different texture. Dotting was used in the background and the coat. Meanwhile swift, short strokes depicted the hair on his head and beard.

MOTION:

This image was produced by an artist named Olafur Eiasson. The simulated rainfall is shot in a set up studio. It is is literal movement for their is actual movement of falling water. This focus of motion in this photograph forces the viewer analysis the image differently. You are forced to slow down and appreciate how this photograph used this element of design in the fourth dimension.

1. Lines
This art is by Hiroshi Sugimoto. It uses lines to show depth. The lines are in different layers to show distance. The horizontal lines cause a feeling of calmness and comfort.
2. Shape
This art is by Henri Matisse. He makes an abstract snail out of just shapes. Not even clearly defined shapes. But he uses these shapes together to make an image appear. Out of all the aged edges and squared angles an image is made.
3. Form
This painting is by Diego Velazquez. In the painting he placed objects in front of other objects to show depth and distance. The bigger something is the closer it seems. But the smaller and the further away it seems.
4. Space
This painting is by Albert Bierstad. He uses space to show the vastness of the plain he is painting. The shade and light show distance between the two sides of this valley. The low water allows the empty space to be really noticed.
5.Color
This art is by William Eggleston. Using the color of the car to match the color of the wall behind it he shows how well it blends together. But is not so landed that you can't see the car. He did this by letting the cars features stand out apart from the car. By this the blending works.
6.Value
This art is by Caravaggio. He uses the similar colors to show shades and darkness. This gives the painting an emotional dark feel. This is because it looks like the light is being sapped out of the painting as if it is only getting darker.
7. Texture
This picture is by Meret Oppenhiem. She uses the look of fur to make this look like it would feel odd or have texture. This is uses to add a feeling to an image that otherwise you would not feel.
8. Motion/Time
This art is by Olafur Elison. It uses suspended particles to mimic movement. this draws your eves to where the particles are going. Thus mimicking movement.

Lines- This photo by Bernd and Hilla Becher uses many types of lines. The photo shows many different photos of water towers. It uses calm horizontal lines in the background, and rigid vertical lines holding up the towers. The photo also uses active diagonal lines and calm curved lines.

Shape- Shape is an element of art that is two dimensional. In this piece of art, Picasso used many different shapes. He used geometric shapes like circles and squares. He also used organic and free-form shapes to create faces and emotions in his art.

Form- Unlike shape, form is three dimensional and includes height, width, and depth. This sculpture by Pablo Picasso is a great example of form. It is three dimensional so it is considered art from any point of view that it is looked at.

Space- In this photograph, there is a lot of negative space. In this photo the positive space is the billboard and the fence while everythings around it is considered the negative space. There is also negative space within the billboard. On the billboard, the mountain is the positive space and everything “behind” it is negative space.

Color- In this photo, by William Eggleston, the artist uses the same color scheme throughout the photo. The artist uses primary colors yellow and blue. He uses different values of yellow to make the photo interesting. The photo is made of monochromatic colors.

Value- This photo by Keith Carter uses different variations of value. The photo uses the lightest value, white, in the swan. The photo also uses darker values like browns and blacks in the background of the photo.

Texture- This photo, by Méret Oppenheim, is a good example of texture because you can imagine how it feels when you look at the photo. The texture in this photo is soft and smooth. The photo makes the viewer feel as if they can reach through the photo and touch the cup.

Motion/Time- This series of photos by Eadweard Muybridge shows implied movement. This series shows how a horse moves in time. It shows the difference between each frame in time.

Line
Many lines are contained in the pictures by Bernd and Hilla Becher. The horizontal lines in the houses give them a sense of height. The Diagonal lines drag your vision across the houses to notice all the small details. All of the lines look bold and strong because they are thick and show that they support the house.

Shape
In this photograph by Paul Strand there are a lot of shapes used. There are rectangles in the building behind the people. These rectangles are tall and show height really well. The people are also shapes used when compared to the rectangles the people look small and frail.

Form
In the painting by Sol Lewitt there is form used in his cubes. The cubes represent 3d in a 2d area. Also you can see the image differently depending on how you look at it because of how he drew the cubes. You can either see a cube with a chunk missing out of it, or a cube with another cube overlapping it.

Space
In the image by Stephen Shore there is a lot of space portrayed. The billboard also has space around it. The space around it contains the grass and fence. Not only does it have space around it, it has space within it as well. It contains depth and gives an illusion of space within even though it is a 2d object.

Color
The image by Sandy Skoglund uses a good example of complementary colors. The image has a lot of blue and orange. The colors blue and orange are complementary meaning they are opposite on the color wheel and stick out. THe fish really stick out because not only is it abstract art, but the colors used make it pop.

Value
The photo by Miwa Yanagi uses value very nicely. The image has a very light valued background with the character in the front being very dark valued making them stick out a lot. THe girl in the cloak has very soft values making her look lighter like an angel. THe clouds in the background also has good soft colors.

Texture
In this photo by Méret Oppenheim there is a a lot of texture. The background is blank and white containing no texture. The cup has the texture of fur making it look soft. It looks like you’d be able to reach out and feel it.

Motion
THe photograph by Eadweard Muybridge contains motion. The series of pictures show how the horse moves when it is running. Each frame is a second in time paused to show how he moves. This photo does a good job of freezing time and when they are all together a story of time is showed.

LINES - This is a painting by Sol Lewitt, the painting shows a great example of the different kinds of lines that are used for certain situations. These lines are composited to make multiple cool designs, the way which some of the lines function show the emotion which the painting is trying to send. Horizontal lines would represent calmness, passiveness and quietness. Vertical lines give the painting a more rigid, active, and , awake feel to it. Diagonal lines give the painting a active and busy feel to it. Curved Lines give the image a more fluid movement, Sol Lewitt mixed this in all of his paintings giving it a strange feel.

SHAPE - the photo taken by Paul Strand gives a good example about how shapes are around us on a daily basis. The image being shown represent the modern pillars on the side of a building.

FORM - The 3D painting done by Sol Lewitt  shows what the proper way a photo based on form should look. This painting includes the width, height, and depth of two images near each other, which causes the look of an optical illusion.

SPACE -  The painting done by M.C. Escher represents the sides of the stairs and the lengths in which the people are away from each other. This image also gets involved with space due the loss of gravity which messes with your mind.

COLOR - The photograph done by Steve McCurry shows the contrast between the two colors, red, and green which are also opposing colors on the color wheel. This is the reason that the image seems so colorful when it's really only using two colors.

VALUE - The image taken by Andrew Miksys shows an old lady playing bingo. The reason this image falls into the category of Value would be due to the shadows in the image. And due to the old feel to it.

TEXTURE - the photograph done by Edward Weston is a great example of why texture is involved in images. The photograph involves many prickly adoptions, and involves a lot of extra texture which makes the image feel more alive.

MOTION/TIME - in the photograph done by Olafur Eliasson. The strobe light and the camera's shutter speed caused the raindrops look like they were standing in motion. This picture adds the effect of the image being stopped in time.
