Period 1 -- Critical Analysis #6

4 paragraphs minimum, 5 sentences min. per paragraph. Believe it or not, this is a self-portrait. Consider what steps the artist had to take to make this photograph happen. How does the reflection function in this image? What does it suggest about the person being photographed?

This isa self-portrait of a girl sitting on the edge of a building. The girl is halfway out of a sky-scraper window. Her reflection is on the wind of of the building. The background are other tall buildings. The lighting is good and you can see half or her face the the way her hair hangs the other parts are hidden.
This image seems exposed properly. The image is in focus and you can see everything in the picture. The color looks very good as well. The pixelation also looks good. Overall the technique is very good and incredible counting the fact that it was a self portrait. The picture was taken with the rule of thirds. The woman's body is the focal point and almost a line of symmetry for the reflection of everything outside.
The message is questionable however. The woman seems to be in deep thought and worried by something. This picture almost makes it seem as though she is contemplating jumping out of the wind. The background is amazing with all the buildings. The reflection upon the window is outstanding because you can see almost everything completely cleat. This picture is taken in the light but from the woman actions it seems as though something dark is happening.
I do like this picture because I wonder how it was taken and what is happening. There is so much going on I just make you take a step back and look at all of it. I wonder what it took to take a photo like that and how long it took her. I do think this picture is successful because of all that it took to take. It turned out very well and I takes your breath away when you look at it.

This image is of a girl on what looks the highest story of an apartment in the middle of a city hanging half of her body out the window. The colors are very vivid and alive but the reflection part looks to be more dark and dimmed. The lighting has a really bright sky, almost looks studio set up. The girl in this photo looks really sad or depressed.
The image seems to have a good exposure and the image is in focus. The reflection makes the colors look more dark and scary and give the photo a weird feeling. No pixilation, adequate resolution.
This image in a way is pleasing to look at because of the many different things to see and what they could actually mean. The rule of thirds in this image is getting used and it looks good. The photographer took it as if we were on the side of the apartment or building. The focal point is the girl half way out the window and there seems to be no frame. The lines in the building direct your eyes towards the girl and the image is symmetrical. The subject doesn't fill the frame but the background is full of different buildings and towers.
This image kind of gives me the theme of people who commit suicide and people who dislike life. A message to all the people that are feeling down or suicidal. This image reminds me of a scary television show I used to watch when I was a lot younger. This image is very beautiful to me and shows a lot.
I like this image because of the various ways different messages can be given off by it. I believe this photograph is very successful.

The image displayed above is by Ahn Jun who made a a set portrait of herself. The picture is pf a girl hanging halfway(half her body) out of a window from a very tall building. There are many buildings surrounding her and you can tell she is super high up because of how low some the buildings or cars look. This picture is using a lot of browns and whites. The lighting is a little over exposed because of how white the whites are which you can tell by looking at her leg.

The image is in focus throughout the entire image. The whites in this image look a little lighter than usual which makes me think the color is not correct. There is not allot of pixilation but if you look more towards the top of it, it may look a bit pixilated. The rule of thirds is being used and the girl is on the right side of the rule of thirds. This picture was not taken by a photographer but was positive perfectly in front of the girl(a self portrait).

The focal point is the girl looking down at the floor scared. The lines are vertical and are all over the picture and direct my towards it. the image is not symmetrical because it does split the image identically in half. The subject does not fully fit the frame and there is extra space. The frame cuts off a part is the subjects frame.

The themes in this image are scary and suicidal. I think there is a story behind the image having to do with stress and mystery The image is interesting to me in the way as why the photographer would take the picture like this. I like the photo and think su[er cool. I think this pictures really successful because I think a lot if people would like this!

the image is showing a girl hanging out of the window in front of a city scape. the colors are monotone with all of them being a very brown color. the sky is a deep blue that contrast the surrounding landscape. the lighting appears to be bright as if it was taken around the afternoon with natural light. i think that the girl is trying to be free form the oppression of the city life and just wants to have time to think.

the image looks properly exposed but it does look a little too dark in some areas. the image is in complete focus which shows that a high aperture was used and a longer shutter speed. the colors look core but here is definitely some editing to the final color of the image. the picture appears to have proper pixilation.

the image is pleasing to look at and it uses the rule of thirds. it does this by having the girl in the corner which is about a third and her head is also focused on. the image is not framed by its content. it does fill the frame and give lots of detail to the whole picture. the window create the look of symmetry as the reflection shows half the girls body and the city.

i think the image is trying to portray a deep meaning of thoughtfulness. perhaps it is trying to point out how civilization traps our creativity and sometimes we need to take a risk to have a creative thought. the photographer must have taken risk i order to get this picture and since it is a self portrait it must mean a lot to the author. i think this image is beautiful and defiantly a cool piece of art.

i liked this photo due to its danseuse age and thoughtfulness. the image really has a deeper meaning that speaks to me. i think the photographer was successful in taking this photo and it just looks good.

This image features a woman half hanging out of a window overlooking a city. The window reflects her leg hanging out the window and creates a mirror like effect. The colors used in the image are mainly browns, blacks, and some blues (colors of buildings and the sky). The street is not visible from the image, nor are any people other than her. The buildings sprawl out across the other half of the image and create a more exciting and interesting view.
The technique of the image seems pretty standard. The artist isn’t changing any colors or anything. The exposure on the image is right, nothing is too dark or bright. The colors all match up properly, everything that is supposed to be a certain color is. Lastly, the pixelation is correct, the image isn’t heavily pixelated.
In this image the rule of thirds is heavily being used. The woman and the building of which she leans out of are placed in a third of the image, leaving the sprawling cityscape to exist in the other two-thirds of the image. The photographer seemed to take the image on the same plane as the woman, as to create an effect that the viewer is too, leaning out of a window. The buildings create lines which lead the viewer’s eyes directly toward the ground, this is to provoke the viewer to question what happens if the woman falls. The image is asymmetrical. This again,is done to show the city in relation to the woman leaning out of the window. The image crops off the woman’s foot in the reflection and some buildings along with it.
Being told that this is a self-portrait, there is indefinitely a story behind the image. The image could depict a inner struggle of the woman, which resulted in suicidal tendencies during that point in her life. It could also tell of her escaping something which was locking her away. The artist obviously wanted to tell a story with the image; however, the meaning is kinda difficult to find (as it usually is). Even if the meaning is kinda convoluted, the image still looks really interesting and cool.
Overall I’d say this image is pretty good. It’s contents are interesting, and it makes the viewer ponder and think about what it is trying to say.

this photo shows a girl that is sitting out of a window of a either a tall building or a skyscraper. this photo was taken in a downtown area of a city. there aren't any dark shadows in this photo. the only colors i see in this photo are shades of gray, white, shades of brown, and blue from the sky. this picture reminds me of someone adventurous.
The image is perfectly exposed. the whole image is all in focus, meaning they used a smaller aperture like: f14 or f20. this picture is color correct. and there is no pixelation. on a sunny day like this, the shutter speed might be 1/100 of a second because of the smaller aperture and the sunlight being balanced.
The main ideas is see in the image are positive, and negative. the positive thought i see is that the girl is very adventurous, and shows that in her image. The negative thought i see in the image is that the girl might be thinking about something gloomy or depressing. there seems to be a story told in this image because someone had to cause her to feel gloomy, or thats her own personality to feel adventurous. i cannot decide whether she is gloomy or daring, but i am leaning toward her feeling gloomy because of her facial expression,
Overall, the image was worth thinking about. the image quality is great, and there is some major thinking when you look at this photo. I really like the setting that the photo was taken, because it gives the story a more popular setting. i think that this photo is very successful, because it has a great quality image, and the thought that is in it is very great and very broad. I think that this image is going to be very successful

This image is of a girl with one of her legs dangling off a tall glass building surrounded by other buildings. It's using more neutral colors and has bright sunlight with distinct shadows. Her leg dangling and half of the girls' body out is occurring in this image. This image is correctly exposed and in focus. The color is correct because the whites look white.
If you zoom in on certain places there may be pixelation but other than that it has pretty adequate resolution. Its generally pleasing to look at because of the composition of the photograph. The rue of thirds is one of the reasons because it displays it well. The point of view would be if the person looked outside the building to their right. It was photographed at a sideways angle in a way.
The focal point would be the girl. It is not necessarily framed around though, more through lines. The lines of the building she's out of direct your eye to her so thats the first thing you se in the picture. The image is asymmetrical because the main building is not in the center, its way off to the right. There is extra space but that gives us a clue in on the scene and surroundings.
The edge of the image crops off the rest of the supposed buildings in that city. The negative space is the black building and the rest are positive. The themes ad ideas associated in this photo are of the two sides of personality. The reflection displays a two world thing, one being darker and another lighter. It hints as it being very unsteady and dangerous.
Te photographer's purpose is to display two different sides of a person. It reminds me of an action movie because of the height and the distress. The image is very interesting because of the thrill it holds. I like it because i like heights and cities along with the danger aspect. The image was successful in a sense that it got the theme across and had good composition.

The image is of a young asian woman sitting half in and half out on a skyscraper. It is using the colors of a cityscape. These colors are very metallic with lots of grey. The lifting is that of a bright day. Besides the buildings the only thing there is to focus on si her with no other life. The image seems very still with no cars or people moving around and her sitting very still.

The image appears to be correctly exposed, however the light coming from the sky and being reflected off of the buildings is very harsh. The image is in focus. in fact, all of it appears to be in or close to in focus. This means she must have used a larger aperture which would make sense if it was a bright day. The image also appears to have a good color balance as the white of her clothes and the more white sandy color of the rooftops looks correct. The resolution is also good.

The image is pleasing to look at, especially with the reflection off of the building. the rule of thirds is being used, mainly with where the reflection is located. The image is taken at about head hight, which also happens to be fairly high up. The focal point is her, and she is not framed by anything. The lines mostly come from the building which just point up. There is not much use of lines in this image. The image is slightly asymmetrical with her placement being to the right in the image. The subject does not fill the frame, but there is no negative space with the buildings and clouds taking up the rest of the image.

I don’t know that there is much of a theme in the image but it does seem pretty depressed, what with her looking down and the grey of the image. I do like the image, though, as it is a little exciting. Also. my grandparents live i New York and I believe this was taken there because of the water towers on top of the roofs. It also seems very teenager like with the sort of daring thing she is doing. All put together I do like the image.

This image shows a woman hanging half her body outside of a skyscraper. It is an asian woman in a white dress with red lipstick and decently long black hair. In the background there is a city in the background. The city is full of buildings with mainly tan, grey, and black as colors with a blue sky. The woman is looking down below as she sits hanging one of her legs off the ledge. The building she is hanging off creates a reflection in the window beside her and creates a another half inside the building.
The image appears to have a relatively deep depth of field with a large amount of the background being in focus. The image seems to be properly exposed, buy could be overexposed just a tad. The image also has a good amount of pixelation when zoomed in on at all, yet is not very noticeable when at a normal viewing size. The colors balance is perfect and creates a plethora of beautiful colors to look at even though there is not a large pallet. This makes a incredibly pleasing image to view and a intriguing image to the viewer.
The rule of thirds is being used here as the woman is of centered to the right of the image allowing the city to be seen, and give a greater scope. The photographer took the photo from a very straight on point of view, but angles it slightly to give the reflection of herself in the buildings window. The image is not framed, but it uses lines in the buildings window panes to attract the viewers eyes to the woman and shows a divide splitting her in half with her reflection. The image is not symmetrical at all, and benefits from having a diverse third. The subject does not fill the frame, however this is used to give the background a chance to show a grand scope and add color with a urban city.
A possible theme in this image could be a divide in this woman's personality as one wants to set free and the other half wants to stay conservative. This is portrayed by only half of the woman hanging off the ledge with her reflection staying inside. The image does not challenge anything, however it does show a woman’s internal divide. This fulfills the artist's objective and makes the image succesful in my eyes. I think this photo is beautiful and captures an immense amount of detail for one photo.

The image is of a girl on the side of a building. Half of her body is outside the building and the other half is inside. The image is in color. The image is bright with little dark spots. The image is focused on the girl. In the background is high buildings.
The image seems to be properly exposed. The image looks to be in focus. The coloring looks to be right. Then image looks to have no pixelation. The image looks to be a happy bright seen. It is pleasing to look at. The rule of thirds looks to be used. The focus of the image is the girl which is display on the left side of the image. Looks to have been shot at level with the girl.
The buildings give the image a fuller look. Which by that not a lot of empty space, its filled. The image could be showing half of her personality. It could be bright and happy on one side. The other side could be dark and sad. That could be what the artist is trying to portray.
The image is a interesting photo. Its a interesting photo in a different way. Its a different photo in a weird way. Its not a normal image. It could show the artist personality. I don't like it, but i don't dislike it. Its successful.

This image shows a girl sitting in the frame of an open window of a high rise building. She has her leg sticking out from the side of the building as she looks down below to the ground. In the background you can see the rest of the city containing water-towers, apartment complexes, and other business office high rises. The image uses vibrant color and lots of shadows from the buildings clustered together.
The image seems properly exposed for the most part. It does not seem to be too bright or too dark. The entirety of the image is in focus. From the foreground to the background, everything visible in the image is in focus. This would indicate that the photographer used a smaller aperture with a high f-stop to create a wide depth of field. There is little pixelation however the detail in the buildings could be better. I noticed that throughout the image there are areas where the blacks and the whites are an unregistered type.
This image is compositionally interesting. It uses the rule of thirds by placing the girl in the right hand side of the frame. The image shows the perspective from the side of the building itself. The lines of the building run in a direction towards the girl while the buildings in the background do the same by using both horizontal and vertical lines. The building the girl is in also has the girls reflection creating a double sided type of theme.
There may be a story told by the photographer here. It could be many things but to my interpretation, two ideas stand out in particular. The first is "reflection". Not only does the girl literally reflect in the windows of the building but her face shows some sort of emotional and personal reflection as well. It is almost as if she is re-visiting her past or memory. The second theme I thought of was a much darker one. This would be "death". The girls leg sticking out of the window may be suggesting the thought of falling or jumping out. Her face also expresses some sort of fear or loss or anguish. Whatever the theme, the photographer wanted to evoke thought and emotion through their image.

in this photo the girl is sitting hanging out a window. she took this photo using a self timer. she had her camera sitting on a ledge. the girl looks sad.
the girl is wearing a bathrobe. she looks depressed. the girl looks like she wants to die. she looks like she wants to jump.the girl looks lifeless.
the city scape behind her looks like New York.the building range from tall to short. the building have reflections in the window. the city looks really pretty. the sky is really blue.
the window is framing the the girl. the window lines directs your attention away from everything else and toward the girls. the girl represents problems in a perfect world.even though everything looks pretty you have to pay attention to the little things. the girl looks sad and wants to jump.
