Period 1 - Critical Analysis #4

1/6/2022

Semester 1 Personal Reflection

Today you will be writing about your own work that you have made in this class.

Take some time to think about the different projects you have completed so far in class. You will pick one project that you responded to, and one project that you did not respond to. Then, you will write about your experience. Be sure to include this information in your writing:
  • Which project did you respond to most? Explain why. For example, if you enjoyed the self-portrait project most, explain which parts of the project resonated with you. Did this project change your way of thinking? Did it help you become a better artist? Did you learn a new skill completing this project?
  • Which project did you least enjoy or respond to? Explain why. What did you find challenging about this project?
Next, pick your favorite image that you have created this year, and write at least 1 paragraph analyzing the image. Describe specifics, form, and content. Finally, evaluate the image. Be sure to describe which project you shot the image for.

Next, pick your least favorite image that you have created this year, and write at least 1 paragraph analyzing the image. Describe specifics, form, and content. Finally, evaluate the image.
Be sure to describe which project you shot the image for.

Your analyses must be a minimum of 4 paragraphs, with 5 sentences minimum per paragraph. Be sure to post your analysis as a comment to the correct class period blog post. Your analyses are due by MIDNIGHT tonight, 1/7/22.

My favorite project that I worked on was the bug eye, bird eye, frame, and rule of thirds. As I had great succession in taking my photos from all of the different angles you threw at us. When it came to the rule of thirds I had trouble thinking what I should do until I saw the blocks of different images. As I was taking a picture of a silver watch I picked some white sides and since the dial was black I chose some black sides.

Another favorite project of mine was the midterm project of dreams. As I took too long procrastinating over midterms I got caught up in this project which I completed pretty much last minute. I wasn’t really thinking about what I genuinely wanted or should’ve done. So I did take a Luigi plush and used him as a prop for him being in the third person. Showing him having nightmares of a Donkey Kong plush attacking him lol. But in the end I thought I did pretty terrible.

My favorite image was actually from my project. I think I did terribly. It was the Luigi plush that was sitting on my bed in the middle with both lights on. I thought it was a pretty cool shot from a dream perspective. Like somethings watching me and I'm in their point of view. I thought it was pretty cool of a shot.

My least favorite was when I had to find my name in the world. As I did feel weird walking around with a camera so I did it at my house mainly like most students did. But I was still getting used to actually using a camera so my ISO was all the way up or all the way down. It really gave my photos this grainy then no grainy look which I didn’t like at all. But it was still a learning experience and I gained a lot of knowledge about photography which is helpful in a class about photography.

The project I liked the most was Self-Portrait. I enjoyed this project because it was fun doing my alter ego and coming up with ideas for my alter ego. I think this made me a better photographer because I got to experiment with flash and exposure and shutter speeds. It was also really fun because I was running around trying to take a picture of myself with a timer. I think this helped me become a better artist because the way I executed the alter ego images were better than I expected and ended up looking really good and I am really proud of myself. I learned lots of new skills like shutter speed because I couldn't figure out why it was taking pictures so slow and came out blurry turn out it was just my shutter speed.

My least favorite project was Dream. This may come as a surprise because a ton of people liked this one. For me, I just couldn't come up with good ideas and I ran out of ideas like halfway so my mind was blank for half of the project. I think if I would do this now I would have done a lot better because I have a lot more ideas now. I also didn't know how to execute the ideas that came to mind so ended up dropping them. That was challenging and thinking about it now I was not creative enough.

I have TONS of favorite images including CAT pictures and my alter ego pictures and I can't choose one so I will write about the alter ego one because I can analyze it better but the CAT pictures are superior and I will promise I will bring more this year. In my alter ego pictures I have a lot of shadow and light going on because I used a flash and a dim-lit room. My pictures were based around mystery and I think I accomplished that because they have mysterious lighting. I played around with different objects to hold and put close to the camera for different effects which ended up looking really good. I also loved my alter ego cat picture.

My least favorite has got to be the ones for the name game. This project was at the start of the year so I didn't know about exposure and shutter speed etc. These were bad pictures because I couldn't get the camera to focus on the letters. I have very bad pictures in every project but the ones I can remember being most blurry and dark are the name game ones. I also didn't like the rules of thirds pictures because had no idea what I was doing.

I liked this semester overall and I had some really good fun moments taking pictures. I experimented with different camera settings and lighting. I also got opportunities to take pictures from different angles, heights, zoom, etc. The pictures with my cats I will treasure forever and I love them. My alter ego pictures will still be my favorite because it was the first time I did something with the flash.

The project that I most responded to was the Dreams. For me it was the easiest project and the one that I got the most creative on. I also did not procrastinate on completing the project so it made shooting the photos a lot easier. I felt like it was really easy to find things to photograph and make them look dreamy. Some of my favorite parts of the project was when I taped a plush bird to my window to take a photo of it. Another part of this project that I enjoyed is when I took a picture of the drinks in the cafe through the window. When I was taking them I didn’t think they would turn out well, but that photo ended up being one of my finals. It helped me learn that any object that is photographed well can look like a good photo.
The project that I least enjoyed this semester was the Composition project. I found this project very difficult because it was harder to be creative with it. I also left the project at the last minute so that also made me like it less.it was also hard to find an object we cared about and make that the subject of the photo. If I would have used my time better it would have been more enjoyable.Another thing that made the project hard is that it was our second project so I wasn't very familiar with the camera yet. I think this project was a little bit advanced for my abilities at the time.
My favorite image I shot was one of the drinks in the cafe. This photo was part of the dreams project. This image is very simple but it looks like it has an interesting backstory. The lighting makes the picture look very interesting, It makes you wonder what it is about. I like the way the color in the picture is only from the drinks and the rest of the image is dark. I also really like how I didn't plan out taking that picture. It was just a quick idea that I had. Overall I think this picture shows what I learned this semester.
My least favorite picture was the one that I took of a stuffed elephant. I put the elephant at the bottom of the stairs and took a picture of it.This photo was part of the composition project. I don't think this picture shows my creative abilities. It is also very straight up and doesn't have any thought or story behind it. The lighting in this picture is good but It is just a picture that didn't tie in with the rest of the project. Overall I think this picture was not one of my best but I am glad I improved.

My favorite project was the dream project. The morning fog created a perfect space to take pictures, and the open nature of the project allowed me to experiment with the idea of liminal spaces. The stark and unfriendly buildings creeping back into the fog were extremely fun to capture. I learned that blowing hot air onto the lens of my camera was a terrible idea, but it momentarily made the image look better. I was able to take around 250 decent images in the span of thirty minutes, which was an added bonus. I think that the images which I took in this project were by far my favorites.
My least favorite project was the self portrait project. I spent several hours and kept deleting pictures because they didn’t look correct. I am not happy with 95% of the images which I submitted but I couldn’t think of any better ideas. The project made my mind feel slow and clouded, which made me unmotivated. I felt like I was drowning while hours went by with only a few new photos. I did learn how to use the timed picture feature on the camera, which is quite helpful. Overall I would call this project frustrating.
The favorite image which I took was in the dream project, the file is called, “Weekley_Grayson_P4_Final_11”, and I think that it is my favorite due to how you can think of the bar. It could be a steel pipe extending out forever through the foggy sky. There is no obvious giveaway that the bar is just a pool handrail until you see the reflection of the apartments next to it. The image doesn’t use the rule of thirds, but the field of view draws your eye off of the picture to the right. The colors are cold and remind me of airport terminal stock images.
My least favorite image is “Weekley_Grayson_P3_Authentic_4”. Except for the horizontal walls and sides of the windows and walls, there is nothing that seems correct in the image. The out of focus surface in the bottom right corner obstructs the window pattern. The door, other than being underexposed, is more in focus than I am. When I look at the image my eyes aren’t sure where they are meant to go, they try to follow the horizontal side of the windows but they get stopped by light passing through the glass.

The project that I responded to the most was the Dream project. It allowed me to use nature in order to create a dreamlike aesthetic. I also used my knowledge on the basic functions of my camera, ISO, aperture, and F stop, to create the perfect lighting. There were two days where there was fog, which allowed me to easily get 50 pictures. My favorite picture was the one where I used my sister to make it seem like she was about to blow out a birthday candle. I was able to turn off the light and use a ring light to provide the perfect lighting. The background was black and all you could see was my sister’s red lips and the green and white birthday candle. I got very creative, and I would say I put more effort into making sure my pictures were interesting. This project changed the way I thought of the technical parts of photography. I realized that having the best lighting and quality was dependent on the ISO, F stop, and aperture.

The project that I responded to the least was the birds eye and bugs eye one. To start off I started the project the day before it was due, so I was mainly focusing on just getting it done and not the content. I also found it really boring because the angles of which I took the pictures were very limited. As a result, I ended up taking the same exact photo with just different lighting for a lot of them. Most of them were also in the same spot. I don’t think I was able to get creative, so in turn I got frustrated and bored. I also didn’t put in as much effort. I also didn’t understand how to set my F stop, aperture, and shutter speed properly so the quality of my images were not the best. This is why my camera would not focus most of the time. Only about a third of the images had good quality.

My favorite image that I created this year was from the dream project. It is titled Pinto_Sofia_P4_CS2_195.dng. I made my sister dress up in a sloth onesie and stand next to the tree. The hood is covering her head, and the light from underneath her is illuminating her face. The rest of the image is dark, making my sister the center of attention. I used a low F stop, meaning my aperture was wide. My aperture was 1/20 and my F stop was 9.0. This allowed me to allow as much light in as possible, which was the light below my sister, to make sure my sister was the highlight of the picture. I used a high ISO of 1600 to ensure there was enough light. This image gives me a sense of naiveness, which is why I like it. The fact that you can only see the side of my sister’s face adds to this illusion. I also think it has the perfect lighting, and it’s not grainy.

My least favorite image was from the composition project, specifically the bugs eye section. It’s titled _MG_5604.CR2. This image was not creative at all, and it was just me placing the heart object on the floor in different spots. The image is a picture of a heart jewelry holder on the carpet leaning against the TV console. The image was shot at a very low ISO of 100 because there was an abundance of light. I turned the light switch on to the maximum amount of light. I used a low aperture of 0.3 and an F stop of 5.6. The image quality was really good, but it just wasn’t creative enough. It’s really boring because the angle I took the picture at was nothing special. The only thing I find interesting is the pattern on the heart. My mom gave it to my grandmother when I was born, and then my grandmother gave it to me.

The project that resonates with me the most and has stuck with me the most through this semester would have to be Project three Self Portrait. I feel like this was a project that I was most proud of and could express my personal similarities or differences in the “scenes” I was creating. My creative side was liberated even though I was working in the same room that I had done my previous projects in. Knowing that my body in the image was the main requirement for the project I had free rein on how to communicate the emotions I wanted to convey.
On the other hand I feel that Project one Name Game I struggled with the most. We had just been introduced as a class to the technical side of photography and working with our cameras properly so I believe some of my struggle lies with that. I also
Wrestled with how to properly demonstrate all the letters in my name fitting all the criteria. Letters like “U”, “N”, and “A” were surprisingly difficult. While this may have been the most difficult for me I somehow on accident captured some nice images with ideal lighting that my oblivious hands created.
My favorite image I created this year is difficult for me to choose with the varying different Projects and scenes I created within those but I have narrowed it down to an image from Project three where I am looking out my bedroom window onto my quiet street. The sun is passing through the large trees outside my bedroom window as I am jotting down doodles on a piece of notebook paper, you can also see my large glass filled with hot apple cider in front of me
My least favorite image from this previous semester would have to be an image also from project three self portrait because of its execution. The image I attempted to make would have been about reading in a light/dark academia aesthetic but unfortunately resulted in a very saturated colorful image with random books sprawled throughout. All photography rules were abandoned with this image except for proper exposure.
