Read the project statement before you write: WHEN MORNING COMES When Morning Comes is a reflection of life in the Mississippi Delta. I first traveled to the region in the summer of 2009 because I needed to breathe after my own troubled times. I was in search of something stronger than myself and attended its churches not to photograph but to cry and be redeemed and to just be a part of the place. I was there to listen as I prayed for a revelation. Over the past seven years I have witnessed signs of strength against struggle, humility amidst pride, and a promise for deliverance in the lives that I’ve come to know here. This is a land stigmatized by poverty beneath a long shadow of racism. I do not wish to overlook this fact but rather look between it for evidence of the tender and yet unwavering human spirit that resides within its fabric. I photograph in five communities that span roughly 40 square miles of the northern Mississippi Delta. Villages with names like Alligator, and Bo Bo, as well as the country’s oldest completely African American city, Mound Bayou, where in 1910, a New York Times headline once declared, “no white man can own a square foot of land.” In what began as a journey for personal exploration is found a narrative of another man’s faith, identity, and perseverance. I see the strength of a single man while acknowledging the machine that replaced thousands, the flight of childhood innocence grounded by the scar of life hard lived, a living room altar to a symbolic president and a toppled white king in a conquered game of chess. While this work makes specific reference to the rural black experience, I am reminded with every visit that these themes of faith, identity, and perseverance are common to us all. These are the traits of strong men. And maybe that is the lesson I was looking for all along

In this photo there is a tree with string lights hanging off it. the tree is infant of a building that looks like a cabin. this cabin looks like its in the middle of no where. the string lights run from the cabin to the tree. this photo looks like it was taken in winter because the tree looks bare.

This image is of a tree in a backyard that seems to be lit up. The picture is in grayscale, so the colors are being used are black and white. The lighting is lit up but just around the tree area. The objects included in this image are, the tree, house, and christmas lights. In the image not much is happening but that doesn’t mean it has no symbolism in it.

In this image, there is a tree with christmas lights in the middle of the frame. There is also a building in the background with christmas lights on it as well. The building looks like a mobile home, and fairly old. The scene takes place at night. The christmas light look really bright because of the darkness in the image.

This photograph but Brandon Thibodeaux is of a tree with christmas lights and a trailer house in the background. The tree is in the middle and is covered in christmas lights. The trailer house looks old and worn down and only one window has light from it. There is a taller tree coming out from behind the house. This photograph is is black and white and most everything is pretty dark except for the tree wrapped in the lights. 4/10/2017 06:40:01 am
This image is of a leafless tree with almost like christmas lights scattered on the branches. It has a brick or a block of stone below the tree and has a house with the light on in the background. The colors are grayscale which is shades of white and black. The lighting is dark shadows. There is a huge tree in the background swell. It seems like a small 1 story house which the people inside are not that wealthy. The lights really standout in this photo and really attract your eyes. There is lights all over the tree and just a small window in the house. It looks like a cold and dull night.

this image is a trailer. not a new looking travel trailer, but a stationary home on wheels. these are notorious for being the homes of the elderly or the poverty redden lower class. what we now from the photographer is that this was taken in Mississippi in an old secluded town with a main population of blacks. knowing this we can infer that these areas have low incomes however there is something else there. 4/10/2017 06:40:55 am
This image is of a dead but brightly lit bush/tree. It is surrounded by a flat, barren land with the exception of a trailer-looking home. Its converted to black and white and that makes the tree brighter against the darker background. Nothing is happening but the light radiating off the tree. This is correctly exposed for a darker setting while including contrast.

The image is of a dead tree without leaves. The tree has strands of white lights on it that connect to an old one story house behind the tree. The house is elevated by wooden planks and has shrubs growing next to it. The only light is from the christmas style lights on the tree and house and a window that has light coming from it. The photo is in black and white with the house appearing grey and the grass and background black and dark grey while the tree is illuminated white and light grey. 4/10/2017 04:09:36 pm
Brandon Thibodeaux’s image of a barren twig-of-a-tree defines simplicity. Nothing exciting occurs in the image. On the surface, the image appears bland and boring. The image features an all black and white scheme, and possesses little to no action. The image simply exists, as if embodying and fully accepting its insignificance. Yet, somehow this pure unadulterated insignificance brings beauty to the image, allowing for the true craft and diligence of the artist to shine forth.

The image is of a lit up tree in front of a trailer home. The image is in black and white, and contains lots of clipping from the lights to the shadows. The image has no motion in it. The image feels very static and permanent because of the lack of motion. The house also has a light on inside, which you can see through what appears to be the bathroom window. Unlike the rest of the image, the light inside of the house creates a feeling of life and that someone is living inside of it. 4/11/2017 11:29:43 am
This photo by Brandon Thibodeaux shows a single leafless tree covered in Christmas lights in front of a mobile home. The mobile home seems to only have one light on that is visible through a samll window in the back of the trailer. The setting seems rural as the background is rather flat with trees on the horizon. In addition, the night sky is empty and the place seems to be either empty or almost empty. The photo is in black and white.
