1st Period - Critical Analysis No.8

3/21/2022

Third Quarter Reflection

Today you will be writing about your own work that you have made in this class.

Take some time to think about the different projects you have completed during the third quarter. You will pick one project that you responded to, and one project that you did not respond to. Then, you will write about your experience. Be sure to include this information in your writing:
  • Which project did you respond to most? Explain why. For example, if you enjoyed the self-portrait project most, explain which parts of the project resonated with you. Did this project change your way of thinking? Did it help you become a better artist? Did you learn a new skill completing this project?
  • Which project did you least enjoy or respond to? Explain why. What did you find challenging about this project?
Next, pick your favorite image that you have created last quarter, and write at least 1 paragraph analyzing the image. Describe specifics, form, and content. Finally, evaluate the image. Be sure to describe which project you shot the image for.

Next, pick your least favorite image that you have created last quarter, and write at least 1 paragraph analyzing the image. Describe specifics, form, and content. Finally, evaluate the image.
Be sure to describe which project you shot the image for.

Your analyses must be a minimum of 4 paragraphs, with 5 sentences minimum per paragraph. Be sure to post your analysis as a comment to the correct class period blog post. Your analyses are due by MIDNIGHT tonight, 3/21/22.

One project that I responded to well was the scavenger hunt P5. I was fully focused on it and was on point with most of my images. But I did struggle in coming up with my shoots. As I came up with the ideas of my shots and brainstormed I waited a while before I got my shooting done. It was very fun when we were forced to use the shadows to create an image. Where I made a shadow background on a white piece of paper using my flashlight to cast a shadow.

The project that I didn’t respond well to was project Color A. As I felt it was a rushed project. I could be mainly blamed for this project due to me getting the game Elden Ring and studying for the SAT. Which of course made it hard for me to really focus on the project along with other classes, tests and schoolwork. Which reflected onto my grades.

The tequila gun photo. That was a very cool shot during my shooting for the scavenger hunt project. I liked how I utilized my props very well along with my lighting. What I didn’t like was how grainy it was because I used high ISO. When I could just edit it in photoshop which I still am figuring out how to use it. I like how I used some setup for this shot by using my light, flashlight, and a white piece of paper.

The opposite primary colors. That was just a throwaway shot of me using my mug that I made last year in ceramics. I saw green and red combined together so I just went for it and started to produce my final outcome of this project in a rushed couple of days. What I didn’t like about that shoot was just the colors not really being the opposite primary color. I was rushing this project so I didn’t really end up doing much editing on that photo or this project as a whole.

The project that I worked well with was the scavenger hunt project. I worked well with this project because it was pretty easy once I got the ideas down. But beforehand it was pretty difficult to actually think of something and it was a pretty good challenge. My favorite photo from that project was the “Old” section where I had an old canteen and an old shotgun of mine. The image looked really balanced out really well.
One project I did not really mesh with was the color still life one. I just haven’t ever really been a huge fan of color in photos. Black and white have always been my total favorite and I think they are the best form of photography. I also was pressed on time since I got busy and forgot about the project which made me rush. Even if I wasn’t pressed I still don’t think I would have liked this project.
My favorite image I shot the last quarter was one of my dog, Oakley. I shot it for the scavenger hunt under the “unexpected” theme. The image itself is really well shot and edited to look almost perfect. It is well balanced out which makes it nice to look at. It is also focused well on her.
My least favorite image was during the color still life thing. I shot a blue and orange complementary and it just did not look very good. Yes, those colors were complimentary but it was pretty dark and there was some black in there which overall did not make it all that good. It was also a little blurry and was not still of 2 colors when instead it was 3 colors. Overall I think I did well the quarter and had some high-quality images.

My favorite project which was assigned to us was the color project, specifically the still life portion. This was my second time to use the tripod and I felt a lot more comfortable while using it to set up my shots. I was able to see the drastic improvement in picture quality because my photos were not as shaky. I would say that the hardest photo to take was my fourth monochromatic picture, because I had to angle the tripod downwards over the chair, while having to keep the photo clean enough to show the scratches and dust on the bottle. I chose to photograph the smooth surfaces of bottles and tomatoes over the rough fuzz of the chair because I liked the contrast in texture.
My least favorite project was the scavenger hunt, but there were only two projects so that doesn’t really mean much. I liked the challenge of having to find different objects and subjects, but I felt like none of my photos stood out and accurately reflected the time which I put into them. I think that the panicked realization in class that I had not shot my photos yet really affected the quality of those photos. My favorite picture which I took was the sharp photo, it is the only photo which I like out of the whole project and I love the colors and tone of it. I also used the tripod in this project, but I was not used to having to adjust it for each photo and the process felt bloated and a tad tiring.
My favorite photo for the entire quarter is the sharp picture in the scavenger hunt project. I love the way that the light from the lamp bounces through the lampshade and through the glass. The darkness of the room contrasts with the brightness and it highlights the texture of the knife and light. The blade of the knife is focused and I like the fact that you can see a small amount of fluff at the edge of the blade. I also feel like the dark brown of the lampshade contrasts well with the warm yellow light, creating a mixture which reminds me of staring into a cup of overpriced coffee.
My least favorite image is the scavenger hunt wet photo. My goal was to show the texture of the wet paint but it looks unfocused and blurry. It is obvious that I did not use a tripod for this photo and it really does show. I have a habit of taking pictures of detailed textures but this is limited by the lens which I use, leaving the bottom of the image unfocused. If I had moved the camera back, it would have been in focus but it also would have appeared too small and distant.

I think the project I responded to the most was the color still life. I really enjoyed this project because I felt like I used my creativity when creating the pictures. This is the project that I took the most time to make setups for the images. On this project I realized that my use of color really improved from my other projects. My favorite thing about this project was watching my ideas come to life. Everything from the setup of the pictures to editing the pictures I feel like I did my best.

The project least responded to was the scavenger hunt. Even though this was one of the better projects I've done in the year, I feel like I did better on the still life project. On this project some of my images were just lazy and had no imagination behind them. I feel like I could've put in more thought and creativity in my images. Some of the things we had to photograph were hard to execute without being too literal. For example sharp or cold were hard to photograph without taking a picture of ice or a knife. I think if I had a chance to redo some images I could've been more creative.

My favorite image was part of the still life project, it is an image of two perfumes with a green and pink background. In this image I put a green shirt and a dark pink dress on a chair. I made sure that both the dress and the shirt wouldn't lay flat on the chair so it would give the image more depth. I picked two necklaces that would shine in the image with the light that I was using. When I took this picture it was starting to get dark outside so I knew that I would need to use artificial light. I used the ceiling lights in my room and I used another light that looked more natural than a flashlight. With the two light sources, plus the little light I had from my window I made the light of the image look more natural and bright. I also like how the light that I used made it so that the edges of the image were dark ,therefore concentrating the image more toward the center.

My least favorite picture was part of the scavenger hunt project. It is an image of dry tree branches. This picture was very literal and had no meaning behind it. It is just a dry tree in my backyard that I decided to take a picture of. I don't mean it's necessarily a bad picture, it just doesn't have much meaning or creativity. The light of this image is really nice but it is just missing the other part that photographs are supposed to have which is creativity. This is an image that does not show my creative skills.

The project that I had the most fun with was the Scavenger Hunt project. I set up some scenes/stages with my action figure that I thought looked really well. The lighting I used worked perfectly for my photos. I enjoyed finding different objects and using them to create scenes like how I used my old colosseum project that I had in third grade to create my cold image. It also made me go out and find/create different stages to fit the adjectives that we had to shoot about. It helped teach me to look more into things instead of seeing them as just a plain object. This helped give me a positive outlook in life and looking and enjoying things more. This project did help me become a better artist because it taught me that you can use anything in photography as long as it has a meaning. I did learn a new skill with my camera. I learned that if you angle your camera in a certain way, it will give the image a certain mood. The Scavenger Hunt project is definitely the project I had the most fun with.

My least favorite project that I completed over the third quarter was the still life project. I did not like this project because I do not like shooting photos that do not really have any action or movement in them. I also found this challenging because in most of my projects, other than this one, I would use action figures in my images. I always loved to play with G.I. Joe men and Star Wars action figures, so I use them in my photos. Doing this brings me a lot of joy, but in this project, I could not use that aspect in my photo which made it hard on me. Those are some reasons why I did not enjoy the still life project.

My favorite image that I created last quarter was my cold image for my Scavenger Hunt project. This was my favorite project because I used a project that I made from when I was little to create this scene. In this photo you have an action figure executing another action figure in the middle of a colosseum that I made in third grade. I tried to make this image as dark as I could to make his actions seem grim and cold. I thought this image was perfect for the project and it also looked great at the same time. I also had a blast setting it up, made me feel like that little kid playing with his Star Wars toys just having fun. That is why this image was my favorite of them all from last quarter.

My least favorite image that I took last quarter was my still life image. It was very plain, plus it was a pain to set up. It was way too dark and just did not look good. In the photo it was a blue car in front of a blue book. It was really plain and just not a good photo. In the background was my white bookshelf which made it feel even more plain. That is why it was my least favorite photo that I shot last year.

The project that I resonated the most with was the second project of the quarter, color. This project required you to go to the color wheel and use different color schemes. One had to be monochromatic, meaning that all the subjects of the photo had to be the same color but could be different shades of that same color. The second part was complimentary, meaning that the subjects had to be opposite colors on the color wheel such as blue and orange or red and green. The project required the photographer to create the scene and set it up instead of just going out and finding something to shoot. This is something that I really enjoy doing because it makes the photo more original. The second reason I really enjoyed doing this project was because it had all to do with colors which makes the photo more vibrant and eye-catching which is something I like.

Although I still enjoyed doing the Scavenger Hunt project, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the Color project. This project required the photographer to shoot images that were examples of different words; unexpected, web, sharp, old, and soft to name a few. It was definitely more challenging than the color project because there were some words that were very hard to understand and find things that were examples of the words such as web or sharp. I definitely believe that I didn't do quite as good of a job on this project as I did on the color project with things like editing, which is one of the main reasons why I didn’t like my work in this project as much.

My favorite picture that I shot in the third quarter was the monochromatic still life in the color project. The two colors that I used in the picture were green and red. I had red strawberries in a green bowl with green, unripe bananas. Behind those two things, I had a jar with red and green flowers and two red candles behind everything. Everything was on a brown table with a plain background. I liked this picture because it was very bright, vibrant, and eye-catching. I also enjoyed setting the scene up.

The picture I disliked the most was the silhouette picture from the Scavenger Hunt project. I honestly didn’t really know what to do with this so I just shot a sofa with no one in it to kind of show a shadow or silhouette. It was a really boring photo which is one of the reasons why I don’t like it. It also seems very lazy and is not eye-catching at all. Overall, that is probably one of my least favorite pictures I have every shot.

The project I responded to the best was the color project, specifically the still life portion. I was able to recognize that my perception of contrasting colors was actually really good. This meant that my complimentary images were the best ones. I also focused on contrasting textures. I used my creativity to set up very intriguing scenes. I was able to really focus on the lighting, which allowed for a brighter and crisper image. This allowed me to make minor edits that enhanced the quality of the images. Lastly, I was very creative with the scenes I set up. It was sort of like playing with Barbie dolls. I was in control of the scenes I displayed. They could be as dramatic or mellow as I wanted them to appear.

The project I least responded to was the scavenger hunt project. This project required me to think outside the box, which gets really frustrating after a lot of failed attempts. A few of my images were underexposed, and I had some white balance issues. Another problem was the amount of images that we had to take. For the first half, I put a lot of emphasis on bringing the perfect idea to life. These images were really beautiful images. Although, for the other half of the words, I was tired and frustrated with myself. The ideas were not coming to mind, let alone unique. I then just snapped pictures of very typical and boring objects. For example, for the word ice, I shot a picture of ice cubes in an ice tray.

My favorite image I shot was from the color project, specifically the still life portion. In this image, there are lemons and bananas on a cutting board. The cutting board is on top of a black cloth. This image is monochromatic because the bananas and lemons are all yellow, which is the main focus of the image. The natural light that comes through the window directly hits these objects, allowing them to have a nice shine to them. The vibe of this image is mellow because of the cut up banana pieces, and the knife in the corner of the cutting board. The amount of positive and negative space are also balanced, allowing for a sort of centered image. I was able to use a small aperture, allowing everything in the image to be in focus. The low angle I took the picture at allowed for a very crisp image.

My least favorite image that I created is the one I used for the word giant. I took a picture of my dad’s shoe next to a doll shoe. This picture was very unoriginal as I was frustrated. All I wanted to do was get the shot done and over with. The lighting of the image was also very yellow as I did not use natural light. Secondly, the image is not in complete focus. This is due to the bad lighting that was used. I just snapped a picture of an object instead of making a meaningful scene out of the object. Overall, the picture was just very boring and unoriginal. The composition of the image was also very bad.

I think I responded most to the color Project more. This is because I like working with color and lights. This project definitely helped me understand the color wheel more in depth and what colors compliment each other. I usually struggle with creating monochromatic pictures because I find it to be boring or bland if you don't have a specific lighting and setup, which I didn’t really have, but I created a nice gray picture concept. That was definitely a larger improvement for me. I enjoyed the complimentary colors photos because I used a lot of food, so it let me really create and make my image instead of just capturing it.

I think I responded less to the scavenger hunt project. I just didn’t have much interest in a few of the concepts and I feel like some of them were made without effort which affected the quality of them. I also just didn’t have many creative ideas for some of the categories. I usually work better when I can kind of make my own version of things and have more freedom in the concepts, like the dream project. I still enjoyed making some of the images though, like the wine bottle one, that was cool.

My favorite image of last quarter wasn’t submitted. It was a photo of the toast and jam I had submitted for my color complementary project. There was flash and lights creating the illusion of sparkles on the toast. I enjoy making illusions with my images with light and colors and this is a good example of that. I also like how the colors went together and it was surprisingly very feminine in a way which I thought was cute.

My least favorite image is definitely the “big” one on the scavenger hunt project. It was just a picture of my laundry basket and not planned out at all. Like I said before I didn’t put much effort into a lot of the images on that project and it didn’t turn out how I wanted them to at all. I just had a lack of inspiration. But that image was just especially bad and I don't like it.
